Chapter 5: The Woman Who Bought Her Silence
Nia sat in the passenger seat of Evelyn's car, holding the canceled appointment card.
She hadn't cried.
Not since the morning she discovered her blue gown had been stolen.
But the words on that card made her hands shake.
“You will never get your eyes fixed.””
Evelyn glanced at her.
“Don't let her frighten you.””
“She has already taken the money.””
“She has taken money. She hasn't taken your future.””
Nia looked out the window.
“That's easy to say when you can see everything clearly.””
Evelyn immediately regretted her words.
“I'm sorry.””
Nia rubbed her eyes.
“I didn't mean—”
“No. You're right. I shouldn't pretend to understand what you're going through.””
The car stopped at a red light.
Evelyn turned toward her.
“Your father once told me something about you. He said you were the most stubborn person he'd ever met.””
Nia gave a small, tired laugh.
“He used to say that whenever I refused to stop sewing.””
“He was proud of it.””
The light changed.
Evelyn drove toward the bank.
At the entrance, a security officer recognized her immediately.
“Good morning, Mrs. Whitmore.””
“Good morning, James. We need access to a safety-deposit box registered under Daniel Carter.””
The officer checked the identification.
“Do you have the key?””
Nia placed the brass key on the counter.
The number 17 was visible.
James examined it, then nodded.
“Please come with me.””
They were escorted into a private banking room.
A manager named Thomas Reed joined them.
He was in his fifties, with neatly combed gray hair and a navy suit.
“Mrs. Whitmore. It's been a long time.””
“Thomas, this is Nia Carter. Daniel's daughter.””
Thomas looked at Nia.
For a moment, his expression softened.
“Your father was a good man.””
“Did you know him?””
“I helped him establish the trust.””
Thomas checked the key number.
Then he disappeared into the vault.
When he returned, he carried a long metal case.
He placed it on the table.
“Everything inside was deposited by your father. The instructions were very specific. It could only be released to Nia Danielle Carter after her eighteenth birthday, with Evelyn Whitmore present.””
Nia stared at the case.
“What's inside?””
Thomas opened the lock.
The lid lifted.
Inside were several folders, two sealed envelopes, a small velvet pouch, and a black leather notebook.
Nia reached for the first envelope.
Her name was written across it.
For my daughter, when she is ready.
She opened it.
A photograph slipped out.
It showed her father standing in front of a large building with a sign that read CARTER DESIGN HOUSE.
She had never seen the building before.
Beneath the photograph was another letter.
Little star,
If you're reading this, I hope you've kept creating. I hope you haven't allowed the world to make you believe that your talent is too small to matter.
The building in this photograph is yours. I purchased it before my illness became serious. It was intended to become your first design studio.
The company shares are held in your trust. The business is yours to lead when you turn eighteen.
Nia looked at Thomas.
“Does that mean I own a company?””
Thomas nodded.
“You own the controlling interest in Carter Design House, along with the building and its registered intellectual property.””
Nia looked at Evelyn.
“How much is it worth?””
Thomas opened another folder.
“The most recent independent valuation placed the company's assets and intellectual property at approximately eight million dollars.””
Nia couldn't speak.
Eight million dollars.
She had been sewing dresses from leftover fabric while believing she couldn't afford a simple medical procedure.
Her father had left her an entire business.
But there was something else.
Thomas opened the black notebook.
“Your father also included a list of individuals authorized to access the company's accounts.””
Evelyn leaned forward.
“Let me see.””
Thomas turned to the final page.
There was Vanessa's name.
Nia's heart sank.
“Why is she listed?””
Thomas adjusted his glasses.
“Your father appointed her as an emergency administrator during his illness. However, the authorization was temporary and expired upon your eighteenth birthday.””
Evelyn looked up.
“Then she no longer had any legal authority?””
“Correct.””
Nia turned another page.
A series of transactions had been recorded.
Several large payments were marked with the initials V.C.
The amounts were staggering.
Some had been transferred to a property company.
Others went to a luxury jewelry retailer.
One payment had been made to a private school.
Nia looked at the school name.
Madison's school.
“Was this my father's money?””
Thomas nodded.
“The transfers came from the company operating account.””
Nia looked closer.
One transaction was particularly large.
Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars.
The recipient was a company called Sterling Properties LLC.
“Who owns this company?””
Thomas checked the registry details.
“According to the documentation, the beneficial owner is Vanessa Carter.””
Nia slowly leaned back.
Evelyn closed the notebook.
“This is no longer a simple family dispute.””
Thomas agreed.
“I recommend immediate legal action.””
Nia looked at the two sealed envelopes.
“What's in those?””
Thomas opened the smaller one.
Inside was a medical authorization.
Her father had arranged for her to receive treatment at a specialist eye center in New York.
The clinic was world-renowned.
The surgeon's name was printed at the top.
Dr. Michael Harris.
A note beneath it stated that the medical fund would cover all necessary procedures.
Nia touched the page.
“Is the appointment still possible?””
Thomas checked the reference number.
“Yes. The medical authorization was never canceled by the trust. Only the separate payment arrangement Vanessa controlled was affected.””
Nia looked at Evelyn.
“So she can't stop it?””
“Not anymore.””
For the first time that day, Nia smiled.
Then Thomas opened the final envelope.
His expression changed.
“This is unusual.””
“What?””
“It contains instructions from Daniel regarding a recorded message.””
Nia looked confused.
Thomas removed a small USB drive.
“Your father asked us to play this only after you had accessed the trust and reviewed the company records.””
Evelyn looked at Nia.
“Do you want to see it?””
Nia nodded.
Thomas brought a laptop into the room.
He inserted the drive.
A video appeared.
For several seconds, the screen was black.
Then Daniel Carter's face appeared.
He looked thinner than Nia remembered, but his eyes were warm.
“Hello, little star.””
Nia gasped.
Her father.
Alive on the screen.
“Daddy.””
The video continued.
“If you're watching this, then you've reached the age when I promised to tell you everything.””
He smiled.
“I wish I could be there to see what you've created. I know you've probably made a hundred dresses by now. Knowing you, you've probably argued with a sewing machine at least twice.””
Nia laughed through her tears.
Evelyn wiped her eyes.
Daniel's expression gradually became serious.
“There's something I need you to know about Vanessa.””
Nia leaned closer.
“Your stepmother wasn't always the person you know today. When I married her, I believed she loved me. But before my illness, I discovered she had been working with someone from outside the company.””
He paused.
“I found evidence that our original textile technology had been copied and transferred to a competitor. I confronted her. She told me I was imagining things.””
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“But I wasn't.””
Nia felt a chill.
“Daddy, who was she working with?”” she whispered.
Daniel continued.
“I made copies of the original documents. The originals are hidden somewhere only you can access.””
He held up a small silver object.
It was a star-shaped pendant.
Nia recognized it.
She had seen it in her father's old photographs.
“I placed the final key inside something you would never think to look for.””
The video flickered.
Daniel smiled sadly.
“One more thing. If Vanessa has taken your medical money, please don't blame yourself. I knew she might try. That's why I made sure the trust could survive even if someone attempted to empty it.””
He leaned toward the camera.
“I love you, Nia. And no matter what happens, don't stop making beautiful things.””
The screen went black.
Nia sat motionless.
Evelyn placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Your father loved you very much.””
Nia nodded.
Then she noticed something.
The star pendant in the video had a small opening in its center.
She remembered a similar pendant.
It had been hanging around the neck of the mannequin in her bedroom for years.
Her father had placed it there before he died.
She had always thought it was a decorative accessory.
“Evelyn.””
“Yes?””
“I think I know where the final key is.””
Before Evelyn could respond, Thomas's office phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then his expression changed.
“Are you certain?””
A pause.
“Understood.””
He hung up.
“Mrs. Whitmore, there's a problem.””
Evelyn stood.
“What happened?””
“Someone has just attempted to transfer ownership of Carter Design House.””
Nia's stomach dropped.
“Who?””
Thomas turned the computer toward them.
A digital transfer request was displayed.
The requesting party was Sterling Properties LLC.
