Chapter 5: The Boy Who Vanished
Emily held the photograph so tightly that the edges bent beneath her fingers.
Thomas.
Six years old.
Dark hair.
A crooked smile.
He looked strangely familiar.
She turned the photograph over again.
*He was never adopted.*
“Then what happened to him?”” she asked.
Daniel stood motionless.
“I don't know.””
Emily stared at him.
“You came here after seventeen years and you still don't know?””
“I spent seventeen years looking.””
“And you found nothing?””
“I found pieces.””
“What pieces?””
Daniel reached into his coat and removed a folded newspaper clipping.
He placed it on the table.
Emily opened it.
The headline read:
*LOCAL BOY REPORTED MISSING AFTER FAMILY TRAGEDY*
Her eyes scanned the article.
Thomas Hayes.
Six years old.
Missing.
His mother, Elena Hayes, found dead.
Father, Daniel Hayes, reportedly absent from the property at the time.
Emily looked up.
“They blamed you.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I was gone when it happened.””
“Where were you?””
Daniel's eyes darkened.
“I was meeting someone who claimed to have information about a business partner who had stolen money from me.””
“Who?””
“Victor Hale.””
Emily's stomach dropped.
“Grandma's investigator?””
Daniel nodded.
“I didn't know he worked for your grandmother.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
Emily turned toward her.
“You sent Victor to meet Daniel?””
Margaret shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel laughed.
“He says otherwise.””
“I never told him to meet you.””
“Then who did?””
Margaret said nothing.
Emily looked at David.
“Dad?””
David rubbed his forehead.
“There were too many people involved.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“I know.””
“Then give me one.””
David stared at the photograph.
“The night Thomas disappeared, your mother called me from the farmhouse.””
Emily listened.
“She said she had proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Thomas hadn't been taken by strangers.””
Daniel's expression tightened.
“She said that?””
David nodded.
“She told me someone close to Daniel had arranged the disappearance.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“She believed Thomas had been moved before Elena was killed.””
Daniel's eyes filled with pain.
“I found his room empty.””
Emily looked down.
“Maybe he wasn't missing.””
Everyone went silent.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?””
Emily turned the photograph around.
“Mom wrote this?””
“No,” Daniel said.
Emily pointed to a tiny marking on the back.
“Then who wrote this?””
David leaned closer.
There were three faint letters beneath the sentence.
*E.C.*
Emily looked at her grandmother.
“Grandma, who is E.C.?””
Margaret's face went rigid.
David noticed.
“Mom?””
Margaret whispered, “Someone from before.””
“Before what?””
“Before you were born.””
Emily slammed the photograph onto the table.
“Everyone keeps saying that!””
She was crying again, but this time she didn't wipe her face.
“I was born seventeen years ago. Why does every answer lead to something that happened before me?””
David stepped toward her.
“Because your mother spent the last months of her life trying to uncover it.””
“What exactly did she uncover?””
David looked at Margaret.
Then Daniel.
Finally, he said:
“She discovered that Thomas had been seen after the night he supposedly disappeared.””
Daniel's eyes widened.
“Where?””
“A bus station.””
“When?””
“Three days later.””
“Who saw him?””
“A clerk.””
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
David's expression hardened.
“Because the clerk disappeared too.””
Daniel stared at him.
“No.””
Emily whispered, “What?””
David continued.
“The police report was changed.””
“Changed by who?””
“I don't know.””
Daniel pointed at Margaret.
“You know.””
Margaret shook her head.
“I know nothing about that.””
“You knew enough to send Victor.””
“I sent Victor because I was afraid Claire would expose something that would destroy David.””
Emily looked at her father.
“Destroy Dad how?””
Margaret said nothing.
David closed his eyes.
“Mom…”
Emily's voice became quiet.
“What does this have to do with Dad?””
Margaret looked at him.
“You were never supposed to know.””
David's expression changed.
“Know what?””
Margaret finally spoke.
“Claire wasn't hiding Daniel's child.””
Daniel frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Margaret looked directly at Emily.
“She was hiding Emily.””
The room seemed to tilt.
Emily stared.
“What?””
David shook his head.
“No.””
Margaret continued.
“Claire told me Emily wasn't safe.””
“Why?”” Emily asked.
“Because someone believed Emily was connected to Thomas.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“How?””
Margaret's voice trembled.
“Because the children were connected.””
David looked horrified.
“Mom, stop.””
“No. She deserves the truth.””
Emily stared at her.
“What connection?””
Margaret reached into the black box.
She pulled out a hospital bracelet.
It was tiny.
Pink.
On it was a handwritten name.
*Baby Girl Carter.*
But beneath it was another line.
A number.
Daniel stared at it.
“That isn't a hospital number.””
Margaret shook her head.
“No.””
Emily took the bracelet.
“What is it?””
Margaret whispered:
“It was the number assigned to your mother’s case.””
David looked at his mother.
“You said Claire gave birth at the farmhouse.””
“She did.””
“Then why was there a hospital bracelet?””
Margaret's hands began trembling.
“Because Emily was taken to the hospital before Claire.””
Emily's eyes widened.
“What do you mean?””
Margaret looked at her.
“You were born twice.””
Nobody moved.
Emily stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Margaret, tell her.””
Margaret looked at David.
Then Emily.
“The first baby born that night didn't survive.””
Emily stopped breathing.
David's face turned white.
Margaret continued through tears.
“Claire was told her daughter was dead.””
Emily dropped the bracelet.
“What?””
“She wasn't.””
Daniel whispered, “Then who was?””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“The baby who died was Thomas's daughter.””
Emily stared at her.
“Thomas had a daughter?””
“No,” Daniel said.
“He didn't.””
Margaret looked at him.
“He did.””
Daniel shook his head.
“My son was six.””
“I'm not talking about Thomas.””
Margaret's eyes moved toward Emily.
“I'm talking about the baby Claire believed was hers.””
David suddenly stepped back.
“Mom…”
Emily looked at him.
“What is she saying?””
Margaret whispered:
“Emily, the baby you were told was born to Claire that night was not Claire's biological child.””
Emily's world went silent.
Daniel stared at Margaret.
“Then whose baby was she?””
Margaret didn't answer.
Instead, the front door slowly creaked open behind them.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood in the doorway.
She was soaked from the rain.
Her face was pale.
May you like
And she looked exactly like Claire.
Emily screamed.
