Chapter 10: The Truth at the Table
Daniel stared at the letter.
“He was Michael’s?””
David nodded slowly.
“That’s what it says.””
Emily took the paper from him.
Her hands were trembling.
*Thomas Carter.*
Not Hayes.
Not the missing child Daniel had spent seventeen years searching for.
Carter.
Emily looked at Daniel.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Don’t be.””
“But you thought he was your son.””
“I loved him as my son.””
His voice cracked.
“That doesn't change because of a name on a piece of paper.””
Emily looked back at the letter.
There was another page folded behind it.
She opened it.
The handwriting was Michael’s.
> I know what I did was unforgivable. But I was trying to protect my bloodline from the people who wanted to control it.
Emily frowned.
“Protect his bloodline?””
David leaned over her shoulder.
She did.
> Thomas is my biological grandson through my son, David.
Emily froze.
She looked at her father.
David went completely still.
“What?””
Emily read the sentence again.
Then another.
> Claire's child is not Michael's daughter. She is David's.
Emily looked up.
“But Mom said…”
Claire's face had gone white.
“I was wrong.””
Emily turned.
“You were wrong?””
Claire nodded.
“I believed Michael was your biological father because that's what he told me.””
David stared at Claire.
“You never knew?””
“No.””
“Then who is?””
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“You.””
Emily looked at her father.
“What?””
Claire stepped closer.
“Michael manipulated all of us. He wanted you to believe he was your father because he knew David would never allow him to control you.””
David's face twisted with disbelief.
“But the affair…”
“There was no affair.””
Emily's breath caught.
“What?””
Claire shook her head.
“I told Michael I was pregnant. He told me the baby couldn't be David's. He convinced me.””
David whispered, “Why would you believe him?””
“Because he showed me medical records.””
Margaret suddenly spoke.
“Forged records.””
Claire looked at her.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
Emily's voice rose.
“Then tell me everything!””
Margaret flinched.
Emily pointed at the letter.
“No more half-truths. No more protecting me. No more secrets.””
Margaret slowly sat down.
“I was afraid.””
“Of Michael?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Michael controlled everything.””
She wiped her eyes.
“He controlled Victor. He controlled the medical network. He controlled people in the police department. He even controlled the people who handled the adoption records.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“And Elena?””
Margaret looked at him.
“Your wife discovered what he was doing.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“So Michael killed her?””
“No.””
The answer came from Claire.
“Michael didn't kill Elena.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Then who did?””
Claire looked toward Richard.
Richard's expression hardened.
“My brother.””
Everyone turned.
Richard swallowed.
“Victor killed Elena.””
Daniel's face crumpled.
“Why?””
“Because she found the ledger.””
“The ledger you came here for?””
Richard nodded.
“Victor wanted it destroyed.””
Emily looked at the old black box.
“Then why did he hide it?””
“Because he changed his mind.””
Richard looked down.
“Before he died, Victor realized Michael was going to eliminate everyone involved.””
Margaret whispered, “Including us.””
“Yes.””
David looked at Richard.
“That's why Victor recorded the conversation.””
Richard nodded.
“And that's why he hid the ledger.””
Emily suddenly understood.
“The ledger proves everything.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't anyone find it?””
Richard looked at the hidden room.
“Because Victor knew Michael would search the house.””
Emily looked at the tiny crib.
“And Thomas?””
Richard's face softened.
“Thomas was never missing.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
“He was taken from Elena and brought here.””
“Why?””
“Because Michael wanted his own grandson.””
David's eyes widened.
“My father wanted Thomas?””
“He wanted both children.””
Emily felt a chill.
“Me and Thomas?””
Richard nodded.
“Thomas was the heir he could control. You were the daughter he could erase.””
David whispered, “Why?””
“Because Michael knew you would never let him use you.””
Emily looked at the letter.
“So what happened that night?””
Claire finally sat down.
“I went to the farmhouse because I knew something was wrong. Elena was there. She had Thomas with her.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Claire continued.
“She wanted to escape with him.””
“What happened?””
“Victor arrived.””
Daniel clenched his fists.
“Then?””
“Your wife fought him.””
Claire's voice shook.
“She told me to take Thomas and run.””
Emily whispered, “Did you?””
Claire nodded.
“I took him.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You had my son?””
“For less than an hour.””
“What happened?””
“Victor caught me.””
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“He took Thomas from me.””
Daniel covered his face.
Claire continued.
“I was trying to protect Emily. I didn't even know where the second baby was.””
Margaret spoke quietly.
“I found Emily.””
Everyone looked at her.
“I found her after Victor left. She was alive.””
David nodded.
“And you brought her to me.””
“Yes.””
“What about Thomas?””
Margaret looked down.
“Michael took him.””
Daniel whispered, “Where?””
Richard answered.
“To a private school in Pennsylvania.””
Daniel stared.
“The name?””
Richard hesitated.
“St. Gabriel's.””
Emily frowned.
“Is he still there?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Then where is my son?””
Richard reached into his coat and removed one final photograph.
He handed it to Daniel.
The photograph showed a young man in his twenties.
Dark hair.
The same crooked smile as the little boy in the old photograph.
On the back:
*Thomas Michael Carter — Age 23.*
Daniel stared at it.
His lips trembled.
“He's alive.””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Richard pointed to the bottom of the photograph.
There was an address.
Daniel read it twice.
Then he began to cry.
Not quietly.
Not with shame.
The kind of crying that comes after holding seventeen years of grief inside your body.
Emily stepped toward him and hugged him.
Daniel froze.
Then wrapped his arms around her.
“I thought I'd lost my son,” he whispered.
Emily held him tightly.
“I know.””
Across the room, David watched them.
Claire stood beside him.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
David looked at her.
“For what?””
“For all of it.””
He looked at Emily.
“She deserves better than what we gave her.””
“She has you.””
David shook his head.
“She had me.””
He swallowed.
“But now she has the truth.””
Emily released Daniel and walked toward her father.
David opened his arms.
She hugged him.
“You're still my dad,” she whispered.
David closed his eyes.
“I'll spend the rest of my life earning that.””
Emily pulled back.
“There's one thing I still don't understand.””
“What?””
She held up Michael's letter.
“Why did he call Thomas his heir?””
Richard answered.
“Because Michael planned to leave his entire estate to Thomas.””
Emily looked confused.
“But Thomas was six.””
“He wasn't the heir because of his age.””
Richard reached into the folder.
He pulled out a final document.
“Because Thomas wasn't just Michael's grandson.””
Emily looked at it.
The document listed Michael Carter's family tree.
David Carter.
Claire Carter.
Then one name beneath them.
*Thomas Carter.*
Emily's eyes widened.
“Thomas was Dad's son?””
Richard nodded.
“Your older brother.””
Emily looked at David.
David began to cry.
“I didn't know.””
Margaret whispered, “Michael stole him before you were born.””
Emily finally understood.
Thomas wasn't Daniel's biological son.
But Daniel had raised him.
Loved him.
Lost him.
And for seventeen years, everyone had been searching for a child who had been renamed and hidden by the very family that claimed to protect him.
Emily looked at the address again.
“I'm going with you.””
Daniel stared.
“You don't have to.””
“Yes, I do.””
David smiled through his tears.
“Then we'll go together.””
Claire stepped forward.
“All of us.””
Margaret stood slowly.
“I should come too.””
Emily looked at her.
For a moment, the old anger returned.
Then Emily shook her head.
“No.””
Margaret's face fell.
“You don't forgive me?””
“I don't know.””
Emily looked toward the dining table.
The candles had burned almost to the end.
The food was cold.
The beautiful dinner they had started hours ago had become the scene where every family secret had finally collapsed.
“But I don't want another secret.””
Margaret nodded.
“I understand.””
Emily picked up the old photograph of Thomas.
She looked at the little boy.
Then at the young man in the second photograph.
Seventeen years of lies had separated them.
But not forever.
Daniel reached for the front door.
Emily followed.
David took Claire's hand.
For the first time, no one tried to stop them.
As they stepped into the rain, Emily looked back at the house.
The place where she'd grown up.
The place where she'd cried at the dinner table because she thought nobody believed her.
Now she understood why.
They hadn't been ignoring her because her feelings didn't matter.
They had been terrified of the truth she was getting close to.
Emily turned away from the house.
She wiped the last tear from her cheek.
“Dad?””
David looked at her.
“Yeah?””
“When we find Thomas…”
She glanced at Daniel.
“…don't tell him he's supposed to be anything.””
David smiled faintly.
“What do you mean?””
Emily looked at the photograph.
“Don't tell him he's an heir. Don't tell him he's a Carter. Don't tell him he's a Hayes.””
She took a breath.
“Just tell him he's finally home.””
Daniel's eyes filled again.
He nodded.
And together, they walked into the rain.
Behind them, the dining room remained lit by a single candle.
On the table lay Michael Carter's final letter.
At the very bottom, beneath everything he'd confessed, was one last handwritten sentence nobody had noticed.
*There was never only one child I was trying to save.*
And beneath it, a name:
*Eleanor Carter.*
The family had spent seventeen years searching for Thomas.
May you like
They had spent one night discovering Emily.
But somewhere beyond that rain-soaked town, another Carter secret was still waiting to be found.
