Chapter 5: The Photograph That Changed Everything
I stared at the photograph sitting on my kitchen table.
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t breathe.
Because the woman standing beside Derek and Emma wasn’t a stranger.
It was my mother.
My own mother.
The person who had raised me.
The person who taught me how to recognize right from wrong.
My fingers shook as I picked up the photo.
“Where did you get this?””
Derek leaned against the counter, watching my reaction carefully.
“From the same place I kept everything else.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You’re enjoying this.””
“No,” he said quietly.
“I’m showing you that you don’t know the whole story.””
I hated that part of me believed him.
Not because I trusted Derek.
I didn’t.
But because my mother had always been strangely quiet about him.
When I first introduced them, she had smiled.
She had said Derek seemed polite.
Responsible.
Safe.
But now I remembered something.
The way her smile disappeared when I mentioned his name afterward.
The way she changed the subject whenever I talked about my marriage.
“What did my mother have to do with Emma?”” I asked.
Derek looked toward Ava.
My daughter was sitting on the stairs, listening.
I immediately stepped between them.
“Not in front of her.””
Derek sighed.
“See? You still think you’re protecting her from the truth.””
“I’m protecting her from you.””
His jaw tightened.
For a moment, the mask slipped.
Then he forced himself to calm down.
“Your mother knew Emma before you ever met me.””
I looked at the photo again.
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“Why?””
Derek didn’t answer.
That bothered me more.
“You brought up my mother to distract me.””
“No.””
He reached into the box.
“There’s something else you need to see.””
I didn’t want to take it.
Every part of me told me not to.
But I needed answers.
Inside the box was an old envelope.
My name was written across the front.
Aaliyah.
My heart dropped.
“This is impossible.””
Derek watched me open it.
Inside was a letter.
My mother’s handwriting.
I recognized it instantly.
I read the first line.
“Derek, I need you to understand that what happened was not your fault…”
I stopped.
My stomach twisted.
Not your fault?
I kept reading.
The letter was incomplete.
The bottom half was missing.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Derek looked away.
“That’s what I’m trying to tell you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You expect me to believe you’re the victim?””
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“I expect you to find out who really was.””
That sentence stayed in my mind.
Because Derek had lied.
He had manipulated.
He had terrified my daughter.
But why was my mother’s handwriting in his box?
Before I could ask more, my phone rang.
Emma.
I answered immediately.
“Aaliyah?””
Her voice sounded panicked.
“You opened the box.””
I looked at Derek.
“How do you know?””
“Because Derek always keeps records.””
“What records?””
“Everything.””
I walked away from Derek.
“Emma, my mother’s name is connected to this.””
Silence.
Then Emma whispered:
“I was afraid that would happen.””
My heart raced.
“What does that mean?””
“She knew.””
“Know what?””
“That Derek was dangerous.””
I turned toward him.
Derek was watching me.
“She knew about you?””
Emma continued.
“She tried to help me once.””
I froze.
“Then why would she be in a picture with him?””
“I don’t know.””
That answer scared me.
Because Emma sounded genuinely confused.
“Where is my mother now?”” I asked.
Another pause.
“She passed away two years ago.””
I closed my eyes.
I hadn’t heard my mother’s voice in two years.
And suddenly, I felt like I had lost her all over again.
Then Emma said something that made my blood run cold.
“Aaliyah…”
“Yes?””
“There’s something you need to know about Derek’s daughter.””
I looked toward Ava.
“What about her?””
Emma whispered:
“She wasn’t taken from me because of Derek.””
My heart stopped.
“Then why?””
The line went silent.
Then Emma said:
“Because someone in your family helped him.””
The call ended.
I stood there frozen.
Derek slowly walked closer.
And for the first time, I noticed something.

He wasn’t smiling.
He looked scared.
