Chapter 4: The Box Behind The Wall

The garage smelled like old wood and dust.

Ava stood behind me, holding my hand tightly.

I wanted to tell her to stay inside.

I wanted to protect her from everything connected to Derek.

But I also knew something important.

My daughter had been carrying this secret alone.

She deserved to be heard.

“Show me where it was,” I said gently.

Ava walked toward the back wall.

She pointed at a stack of boxes behind a metal shelf.

“That one.””

I moved the boxes carefully.

Underneath an old blanket was a small black container.

No label.

No name.

Just a lock.

I stared at it.

“Did Derek ever open this?””

Ava shook her head.

“He told me it was none of my business.””

I took a deep breath.

I didn’t know what I expected to find.

But when I opened the box, I immediately knew something was wrong.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Different houses.

Different rooms.

Different children.

I picked up the first picture.

A young girl standing beside Derek.

My hands went cold.

It was Emma’s daughter.

On the back of the photo was a date.

Years before I met him.

I picked up another.

A different child.

A different family.

A different life Derek had hidden.

Ava looked over my shoulder.

“Mommy…”

I quickly covered the pictures.

“You don’t need to see this.””

But she had already seen enough.

“Was he always like this?””

I didn’t know how to answer.

Because the truth was terrifying.

Maybe I hadn’t married a man who changed.

Maybe I had married a man who was always this way.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A single sentence appeared:

“You found the box.””

My heart stopped.

I looked around the garage.

“Who sent that?””

Ava stepped closer.

“Mommy?””

Another message came.

“He knows you opened it.””

The garage suddenly felt smaller.

I grabbed Ava’s hand.

We walked quickly toward the house.

Then I heard it.

A car door closing outside.

I froze.

Ava looked at me.

“Is that him?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

The front door opened.

Derek’s voice echoed through the house.

“Aaliyah?””

I moved in front of Ava.

Every instinct told me to protect her.

Derek walked into the living room.

His eyes immediately went toward the open box in my hands.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then he smiled.

Not an angry smile.

A calm one.

The kind that scared me more.

“I told you not to dig into things you don’t understand.””

I held the box tighter.

“You lied to me.””

He tilted his head.

“You don’t know the truth.””

“I know enough.””

Derek looked at Ava.

Then back at me.

“You really think Emma told you everything?””

My expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

He slowly walked closer.

“Emma left something out.””

I didn’t move.

“What?””

Derek reached into his jacket pocket.

He pulled out an old photograph.

Then placed it on the table.

Ava gasped.

Because the picture showed Emma.

Derek.

And another person standing between them.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I never expected to see.

My own mother.

Derek looked at me.

“You should ask your family why they helped me hide the truth.””

May you like

And for the first time in my life…

I wondered if Derek was the only person who had been lying to me.
