Chapter 6: The Truth Behind the Harris Name

I read the words again.

He wasn't Daniel's real father.

The ink had faded slightly, but the letters were clear.

I looked at Rebecca.

“Is this some kind of joke?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then explain it.””

Rebecca sat back down. She looked suddenly older, as though the years she'd spent protecting the secret had finally caught up with her.

“Richard raised Daniel from the time he was three. As far as Daniel knew, Richard was his biological father.””

“And he wasn't?””

“No.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The boy beside Daniel had the same dark eyes as my husband. The third boy, whose face had been scratched out, wore a school uniform I recognized from the old family photographs.

“Who was his father?””

Rebecca's eyes filled.

“Our uncle, Thomas.””

I stared at her.

“Your uncle?””

“Our mother's younger brother. He died before Daniel was born.””

“Why would Richard raise another man's child?””

“Because our mother was pregnant when she married him. Richard agreed to raise Daniel as his own, but he never let Daniel forget that he wasn't really his son.””

The room felt too small.

Rebecca continued.

“Richard was a cruel man. He used the secret to control Daniel whenever he wanted. If Daniel disobeyed him, Richard reminded him that he should be grateful anyone had agreed to raise him.””

I thought of the old recording.

You think you're better than me?

Richard's face had twisted with anger when Daniel challenged him.

Now I understood another layer of that anger.

He hadn't simply wanted obedience.

He'd wanted to make sure Daniel never forgot who held the power.

“Did Daniel know the truth before he died?””

“Yes. He discovered it when he was in his twenties. Our mother told him after Richard died.””

“Why didn't he tell me?””

Rebecca lowered her eyes.

“He was ashamed. He thought it would make people question who he was.””

I felt a strange surge of anger.

“His biological father didn't make him the man he was. Neither did Richard. Daniel made choices. He was cruel to Matthew, and he spent the rest of his life trying to make amends.””

Rebecca nodded.

“I know.””

“Then why does this matter now?””

“Because the person who sent those messages knows about the secret. And because Daniel believed the person might be connected to the family.””

She reached for the photograph.

“There's another name you need to know.””

Before she could continue, my phone rang.

It was Principal Bennett.

“Emily, I'm sorry to interrupt, but I need to speak with you about Miles.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?””

“The school received a message this morning from an anonymous account. It contains private information about the bullying complaints, along with threats directed at Ariana.””

I stood.

“Is she safe?””

“She is with her mother. We've contacted the appropriate authorities about the threats and are preserving the messages. But there's something else you should know.””

“What?””

“The message includes a photograph of a document from Daniel's file.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“What document?””

“A letter Daniel submitted to the school before his death. It contains information that wasn't shared with students or their families.””

My voice dropped.

“Can you tell me what it says?””

“Not over the phone. Please come in with Miles this afternoon. And Emily, I strongly recommend you don't confront whoever you suspect is responsible until we've established what we're dealing with.””

When the call ended, Rebecca was already reaching for her coat.

“I'm coming with you.””

“No. I need to speak with Miles first.””

She looked hurt.

“Emily, I understand that you're angry with me—”

“I'm not angry because you kept a secret. I'm angry because every adult in this family seems to think protecting children means hiding the truth from them.””

Rebecca fell silent.

I softened my voice.

“If you want to help, tell me the name you were about to give me.””

She looked at the photograph for a long moment.

“Thomas had a son,” she said.

“A boy named Michael. He was a few years older than Daniel. After Thomas died, Michael disappeared from the family. Richard never wanted to acknowledge him.””

“Why?””

“Because Michael had inherited Thomas's share of a family property. Richard believed he should have controlled it.””

I frowned.

“What property?””

“An old house outside town. It was supposed to pass to Thomas's descendants, but the paperwork was disputed. Michael eventually received it, then cut contact with everyone.””

I remembered the scratched-out face in the photograph.

“Is Michael the person who sent the messages?””

“I don't know. But Daniel believed he might have resurfaced.””

I left Rebecca's house with the photograph and the letter.

When I arrived home, Miles was sitting at the kitchen table, his laptop closed in front of him.

He looked up.

“Did you find out who Matthew is?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

I sat across from him.

“Ariana is Matthew's daughter.””

His face drained of color.

For several seconds, he didn't speak.

Then he whispered, “Dad knew?””

“He did. He'd been trying to help her family.””

Miles pressed his hands against his forehead.

“Oh, God.””

“Why?””

“Because I said things about her dad, too.””

I waited.

Miles stared at the table.

“The boys in the group chat found an old video of her father. They said he was weird. They made jokes about him being poor, about his clothes, about how he talked.””

His voice cracked.

“I joined in because I didn't want them to start on me.””

I felt the familiar instinct to comfort him rise in my chest.

I didn't suppress it.

But I didn't let it erase the truth, either.

“You still chose to hurt Ariana.””

“I know.””

“And you hurt other students, too.””

“I know, Mom.””

He wiped his face.

“I don't know how to fix it.””

“You start by telling the truth. You cooperate with the school. You stop participating in the group chat. And you accept that the people you've hurt may not forgive you.””

He nodded slowly.

“What if they never do?””

“Then you keep doing the right thing anyway.””

He looked at me.

“Is that what Dad did?””

I thought about the video of Daniel standing up to Richard. I thought about his letters to Matthew, his efforts to help Ariana, and the words he'd left for me.

“Yes,” I said.

“But he also carried his guilt for years because he waited too long to face what he'd done.””

Miles looked down.

“I don't want to be like Grandpa.””

“Then don't be.””

For the first time, my son didn't argue.

We sat together in silence until his phone vibrated on the table.

He flinched.

I held out my hand.

“May I?””

He nodded and passed it to me.

The message came from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of the same old family picture Rebecca had shown me.

This time, the scratched-out face had been digitally restored.

The young man standing beside Daniel had dark eyes, a narrow jaw, and a faint scar across his left eyebrow.

Beneath the image was a message.

*You want to know why Daniel spent his final months trying to find Matthew? Ask him what happened the night Thomas died.*

I read it twice.

Then another message appeared.

*Your husband didn't just inherit his father's cruelty, Emily. He inherited a lie.*

I stared at the screen.

Miles leaned closer.

“Mom, who is that?””

Before I could answer, my phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID displayed a number I didn't recognize.

I answered cautiously.

“Hello?””

A man's voice came through, low and unsteady.

“Emily Harris?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

“My name is Michael Thomas.””

I gripped the phone.

“Are you the person sending my son these messages?””

“No,” he said quickly.

“And I need you to believe me when I tell you that someone is using my name.””

“Why should I believe anything you say?””

“Because I knew Daniel. And because I know what he was trying to tell you before he died.””

My heart hammered.

“What happened the night Thomas died?””

Michael went silent.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Daniel was there, Emily. He was only a child, and he wasn't responsible for what happened. But Richard spent the rest of his life making sure Daniel believed he was.””

I closed my eyes.

“What happened that night?””

Michael drew a shaky breath.

May you like

“Thomas didn't die in an accident. He died trying to protect Daniel from his own father.””

And before I could ask another question, the line went dead.
