Chapter 7: The Message From the Missing Mother

Detective Renee Carter had seen kidnappers demand money, silence, and safe passage.

She had never seen one leave a child's bracelet beside a bloodstained safe.

The small silver chain lay in her palm as she stood in the Jackson family's basement. Noah's name was engraved on the clasp, along with the date of his seventh birthday. Emily had given it to him two years earlier.

Renee turned toward Officer Miller.

“Seal the house. Nobody touches anything else. I want fingerprints lifted from the safe, the envelope, and every door leading into this basement.””

Miller nodded.

“What about the hospital?””

“Send the security footage to digital forensics. I want the person who took Emily identified before they leave the city.””

Her phone vibrated.

It was Arthur.

“Detective, where is Emily? The hospital says she's gone. Noah is crying, and nobody will tell me what's happening.””

Renee closed her eyes briefly.

“Arthur, I need you to listen carefully. Emily has been taken from her hospital room. Noah is safe with police officers.””

“What?””

“We're investigating a possible abduction.””

“Who took her?””

“We don't know yet.””

“Then find her!””

His voice cracked so sharply that Renee heard him struggle to breathe.

“Arthur, I'm doing everything I can.””

“My wife has been buried alive once. How many times does she have to survive before someone lets her live?””

Renee had no answer.

“I need you to come to the station,” she said.

“But don't bring Noah. Keep him with the officers until we understand what's happening.””

“I'm coming.””

The call ended.

Renee looked at the bracelet again.

Someone had taken Emily, but they had deliberately left evidence pointing toward Noah. That could mean the kidnappers wanted to frighten the family into cooperating.

Or they wanted Renee to make a mistake.

She wasn't going to give them that opportunity.

“Officer Miller,” she said, “find Caleb Ross.””

“He isn't answering his phone.””

“Then find the phone.””

Miller checked his tablet.

“His vehicle was picked up on a traffic camera heading east about forty minutes ago. There's no sign of him at home.””

“Check the airport, bus stations, and the highway exits. Quietly. If he knows we're looking for him, he'll disappear.””

Renee returned to the safe.

The missing envelope bothered her more than anything else.

The person who had taken it knew the house contained evidence. They had either been there before or had received detailed instructions from someone who had.

She crouched beside the workbench and examined the dust.

A rectangular space on the shelf was noticeably cleaner than the surrounding wood.

Something had been removed.

She called the forensic technician.

“Did you photograph this shelf before the safe was opened?””

“Yes, Detective.””

“Compare the images. I want to know whether anything else was taken.””

While she waited, Renee examined the old steel safe. Its interior contained financial records, several encrypted drives, and a stack of photographs.

One showed Arthur's father standing beside Victor Hale at a charity gala.

Another showed Margaret with a man Renee didn't recognize.

The final photograph stopped her cold.

Emily stood in front of a warehouse, holding a folder against her chest.

Beside her was Caleb Ross.

They weren't smiling.

In the background, a dark SUV was parked near the loading entrance.

Renee flipped the photograph over.

Written on the back were four words in Emily's handwriting:

*Caleb knows about Noah.*

Her phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID showed an unknown number.

Renee answered immediately.

“Detective Carter.””

For several seconds, she heard only breathing.

Then a woman's voice whispered, “Renee?””

“Emily?””

“Yes.””

Renee stood so quickly that her chair scraped across the concrete.

“Where are you? Are you hurt?””

“I don't have much time.””

“Tell me where you are.””

“I can't. They're watching me.””

“Who took you?””

Emily's voice trembled.

“Caleb.””

Renee looked toward Miller.

He immediately began recording the call.

“Caleb Ross?””

“Yes.””

“Are you injured?””

“No. Not yet.””

The last two words made Renee's blood run cold.

“Emily, listen to me. We're going to get you out. I need you to tell me where you are.””

“I don't know the street. They brought me here in a van. There's a generator outside, and I can hear trucks.””

“Are you in a warehouse?””

“I think so.””

Renee remembered the photograph.

“Is Victor Hale there?””

“No. But Caleb keeps talking to someone on the phone. He says Victor is coming.””

“Do you have the records?””

“No.””

“Who has them?””

“Caleb took the envelope from the basement. He said it contains something Victor has been trying to destroy for years.””

“What is it?””

Emily took a shaky breath.

“My father-in-law's confession.””

Renee froze.

“Arthur's father confessed to the financial scheme?””

“He didn't confess to stealing the money. He confessed to helping Victor establish the original accounts. He planned to expose everything before he died.””

“Why would Caleb want that letter?””

“Because it names the person who ordered my husband's identity stolen.””

Renee glanced at the photograph again.

“Emily, who was it?””

A sudden metallic crash sounded through the phone.

Emily gasped.

“Caleb?””

A man's voice shouted in the background.

“Who are you talking to?””

Emily began whispering rapidly.

“Renee, listen. Caleb wasn't just helping Victor. He was the one who—”

The line went dead.

“Emily!””

Renee called back.

The number was unavailable.

She turned to Miller.

“Get me every industrial warehouse near the eastern freight yards. Look for facilities with backup generators and active truck traffic.””

Miller was already moving.

“On it.””

Renee grabbed her coat.

Then another message appeared on her phone.

It contained a photograph of Noah sitting in the hospital waiting room.

His face was turned toward the camera.

Someone had circled his head in red.

Beneath the image was a message.

*ONE HOUR. BRING THE LETTER. COME ALONE.*

Renee stared at the screen.

They had been watching the hospital, too.

She immediately called the officer guarding Noah.

“Get him into a secure room. No windows. Keep two officers with him and verify every person who approaches.””

“Understood.””

“Don't tell him about the photograph.””

She hung up and looked at Miller.

“They're threatening Noah to force us to hand over the evidence.””

Miller's expression hardened.

“What do you want to do?””

Renee placed the photograph of Emily and Caleb on the table.

“We're going to find them.””

“But the deadline—”

“Is designed to make us rush. That's exactly what they want.””

She studied the warehouse photograph once more.

A small sign was visible behind Emily's shoulder, partially obscured by the dark SUV.

Renee zoomed in.

Three letters emerged.

*BRT.*

She called the department's intelligence unit.

“Find every warehouse in the eastern freight district connected to a company with those initials. Cross-reference it with Victor Hale, Caleb Ross, and Westbridge Capital.””

As she waited, her phone vibrated again.

A message from an unknown number.

No photograph this time.

Just six words.

*Ask Arthur what happened to his father.*

Renee read the sentence twice.

Then she remembered Daniel Mercer's unfinished warning.

Arthur's best friend had access to the safe.

Caleb had taken the letter.

And Emily had said the person who stole Arthur's identity was named in the confession.

Renee called Arthur.

He answered on the first ring.

“Did you find her?””

“Not yet. But I need you to answer a question.””

“Anything.””

“What happened to your father?””

Silence.

Then Arthur whispered, “He didn't die of a heart attack.””

Renee straightened.

“What?””

“My mother told me he died in his sleep when I was twenty-two. But a week before his funeral, I heard her arguing with Caleb in the kitchen.””

“What did they say?””

Arthur's voice became unsteady.

“Caleb said my father had left a copy of something behind. My mother told him the original was already destroyed.””

“Did you ask what they were talking about?””

“Yes. They said it was business paperwork.””

“Arthur, was your father murdered?””

A long silence followed.

Then Arthur answered with words that changed everything.

“I don't know. But the night before he died, he called me and told me never to trust my best friend.””

Renee looked at the photograph of Emily and Caleb.

“Arthur, I need you to stay where you are.””

“Why?””

“Because I think your father's death, your wife's attempted murder, and the missing financial records are connected.””

She ended the call and turned toward Miller.

“Find Caleb Ross. Now.””

Miller's tablet chimed.

He looked at the screen, then up at Renee.

“Detective, we found the warehouse.””

“Where?””

“An abandoned freight depot on Mercer Road. The property belongs to a company registered under Margaret Jackson's maiden name.””

Renee grabbed her weapon.

“Call the tactical team.””

Miller hesitated.

“There's something else. A vehicle matching Caleb's description just left the property.””

“Which direction?””

“Toward the hospital.””

Renee felt her heart drop.

“Get someone to intercept it.””

Miller's phone rang before he could respond.

He listened.

Then his face went white.

“Detective…”

“What?””

“The hospital just reported that Noah is missing.””

For the second time that day, Renee felt the investigation slipping out of her hands.

But this time, she knew exactly what the kidnappers wanted.

They weren't trying to make her choose between Emily and the evidence.

They were trying to make Arthur choose between his son and the truth.

May you like

And if Arthur's father had left behind a confession, someone was willing to kill every member of the Jackson family to keep it hidden.

Including the little boy who had refused to bury his mother.
