Chapter 5: The Recording That Destroyed a Family

Arthur Jackson listened to his own voice coming from Renee Carter's phone.

“I understand,” the recording said.

“Just make sure Noah isn't there when it happens.””

The audio stopped.

Arthur stared at the screen.

“No.””

Renee lowered the phone.

“Do you recognize the voice?””

“It's mine.””

“Did you make this recording?””

“No!””

His answer came so quickly that it echoed through the room.

Renee studied him.

“Arthur, I need you to stay calm.””

“Someone edited that. Someone made it sound like me.””

“Possibly. That's why the forensic team is examining the original file.””

Arthur grabbed the back of a chair.

“My mother has spent my entire life making decisions for me. She handled my father's estate. She helped with our mortgage. She even insisted on reviewing the documents after Emily's accident.””

He swallowed hard.

“But I never agreed to hurt my wife.””

Renee played the recording again.

Margaret's voice was unmistakable.

“Your wife has become a serious problem. If she gives those files to the authorities, everyone involved will lose everything.””

Then Arthur's recorded voice replied, “I understand. Just make sure Noah isn't there when it happens.””

A third voice entered the conversation.

Martin Bennett.

“And what about the body?””

Margaret answered without hesitation.

“Use the same arrangement we discussed. Arthur will sign whatever paperwork you give him.””

The recording ended with a click.

Arthur sank into the chair.

“It's impossible.””

Renee sat across from him.

“Let's start with something simple. Where were you on the night Emily's car crashed?””

“At home.””

“Can anyone confirm that?””

He hesitated.

“My neighbor saw me taking the trash out around nine. After that, I went inside.””

“Did you receive any calls from your mother?””

“Yes. She called around ten.””

“What did you discuss?””

“She told me Emily had been in an accident.””

Renee leaned forward.

“Before the hospital contacted you?””

Arthur's eyes widened.

He looked as though he had been struck.

“My mother called first.””

“What exactly did she say?””

Arthur struggled to remember.

“She said Emily was hurt. She told me to stay home because she would handle everything.””

“Did she tell you Emily was dead?””

“Not on that call.””

“Then when did you learn she had supposedly died?””

“Martin called me the next morning.””

Renee made a note.

“Did your mother tell you to sign any documents?””

“Yes. She said Martin would bring the paperwork and that I should trust him.””

“Why?””

“Because she said the hospital had already confirmed everything.””

Arthur stared at his hands.

“I never saw a doctor. I never identified a body. I didn't even see Emily's face.””

Renee's expression hardened.

“Yet you signed the funeral documents.””

“Yes.””

“Without asking to see your wife?””

Arthur looked up, devastated.

“I thought I was protecting myself from seeing her badly injured. I thought I was doing what everyone said was best.””

Renee didn't soften the truth.

“Someone used your grief to make you cooperate. Whether you knew more than you're telling me remains to be determined.””

Arthur nodded slowly.

“Then investigate me. Take my phone. Search my house. Do whatever you need to do.””

He stood.

“But please don't let them near my son.””

Renee believed the fear in his voice was real.

That didn't make him innocent.

It made the next step more important.

She turned to Officer Miller.

“Bring Margaret Jackson into Interview Room Two. Separate her from everyone else, and don't tell her what we found.””

Miller nodded and left.

Arthur followed Renee toward the hospital lobby, but she stopped him at the elevator.

“You need to stay with Noah.””

“I can't sit in that room knowing my mother might have arranged Emily's murder.””

“You can do something more important. Your son needs one parent who isn't being questioned by police.””

Arthur glanced toward the hospital room.

Noah was sitting beside Emily, carefully arranging the blanket around her shoulders.

Arthur's face crumpled.

“Tell him I'll be back soon.””

Then he turned and walked away.

Renee took the elevator downstairs.

Margaret Jackson sat in the lobby wearing a tailored charcoal coat and pearl earrings. Her silver hair was pinned neatly at the back of her head. A small leather handbag rested on her lap.

She looked like a woman who had spent her entire life making sure nothing appeared out of place.

When Renee approached, Margaret stood.

“Detective Carter, thank goodness. I've been waiting nearly twenty minutes. Nobody will tell me anything about Emily.””

“I'm sure you understand that this is an active investigation.””

“Of course. But I'm family.””

“Then you'll understand why I need to ask you some questions.””

Margaret's expression tightened.

“About what?””

“Emily's accident.””

Margaret sat again.

“What a terrible tragedy.””

“Were you aware that Emily was alive when her funeral began?””

The color drained from Margaret's face.

Only for a second.

Then she laughed.

“That's a grotesque question.””

“It's a straightforward one.””

“My daughter-in-law was pronounced dead. I attended her funeral. I watched my grandson suffer. Are you suggesting I knew she was alive?””

“I'm asking.””

Margaret pressed a hand to her chest.

“This is outrageous.””

Renee placed a photograph of the syringe on the table.

“Do you recognize this?””

“No.””

“A sedative was found inside the coffin.””

Margaret's eyes flickered toward the photograph.

“I'm not a medical professional.””

“You didn't need to be one to arrange a funeral.””

Margaret went silent.

Renee continued.

“Did you have any financial dealings with Victor Hale?””

“No.””

“Have you ever transferred money through accounts associated with Westbridge Capital?””

“No.””

“Did you know that millions of dollars were being moved through accounts registered under your name and your son's?””

Margaret's fingers tightened around her handbag.

“I have no idea what you're talking about.””

Renee opened the recording on her phone.

“Perhaps this will help.””

She pressed play.

Margaret's own voice filled the room.

“Use the same arrangement we discussed. Arthur will sign whatever paperwork you give him.””

Margaret didn't move.

The recording continued.

Then it ended.

Renee watched her carefully.

“Would you like to explain that?””

Margaret stared at the phone.

Then, slowly, she looked up.

“You have no idea what you're dealing with.””

“Then help me understand.””

“Emily was destroying our family.””

“By investigating financial crimes?””

“By refusing to understand the consequences!””

Margaret's voice rose.

“She thought she could expose people who had protected this family for years. She thought she could walk into a police station with a folder and bring down men who control half the businesses in this city.””

“So you helped them kill her?””

Margaret's lips pressed together.

“I didn't kill anyone.””

“Did you know she was alive when Martin put her in the coffin?””

Margaret looked away.

That was answer enough to make Renee's stomach turn.

“Did you know?”” Renee repeated.

“I was told the sedative would keep her unconscious.””

“And when Martin reported movement inside the coffin?””

Margaret's eyes snapped back.

“How do you know about that?””

Renee didn't answer.

Margaret realized her mistake.

For the first time, the composure she had worn like armor began to crack.

“He was supposed to check her first,” she whispered.

Renee leaned forward.

“Who was?””

“Martin.””

“Check her for what?””

Margaret's mouth trembled.

“Whether she could still speak.””

Renee felt a chill move down her spine.

“So you knew she might be alive.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I knew she was dangerous.””

“That's not an answer.””

“She had the records!””

“And that justified burying her?””

Margaret slammed her palm against the table.

“You don't understand what she was going to do! She would have taken Arthur down with her. She would have destroyed Noah's future. She would have ruined everything!””

Renee stood.

“Your grandson is the reason Emily is alive.””

Margaret looked up sharply.

“Where is Noah?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“Does he know?””

“He knows enough to be afraid of you.””

Margaret's face twisted.

“He's a child. He doesn't understand what this family has sacrificed.””

“No. He's a child who heard his mother knocking from inside a coffin while the adults around him tried to silence him.””

For a moment, Margaret looked genuinely shaken.

Then her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

Renee noticed the name displayed.

*VICTOR HALE.*

“Don't answer it,” Renee said.

Margaret stared at the phone as it continued vibrating.

“Answer it,” Renee ordered.

“Put it on speaker.””

Margaret's fingers trembled as she accepted the call.

“Victor,” she said.

A man's voice came through the speaker.

“Is Emily dead?””

Margaret looked at Renee.

“I don't know.””

“Don't lie to me. Martin says the police have her.””

Margaret went pale.

Victor continued.

“Listen carefully. If she's talking, we have a problem. If she's given them the location, we have a bigger one.””

“What location?”” Renee interrupted.

Silence.

Then Victor laughed softly.

“Who is this?””

“Detective Renee Carter.””

The call disconnected.

Renee immediately signaled to Miller.

“Get me an emergency location request for that number. Notify the surveillance team. I want Victor Hale located before he has time to disappear.””

Margaret slumped in her chair.

Renee turned back to her.

“What location was Victor talking about?””

Margaret shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“Try again.””

“I swear I don't know!””

Renee placed both hands on the table.

“Emily told me she hid the original records somewhere Victor would never look. Someone has just confirmed that those records matter enough to risk another murder.””

Margaret stared at the floor.

Then she whispered, “The old house.””

“What old house?””

“The house where Arthur grew up. The one his father built.””

Renee waited.

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

“Emily discovered the original account documents were connected to a safe in the basement.””

“Who has access to it?””

“Arthur. Me. And Victor.””

Renee turned toward Miller.

“Get a team to that property immediately.””

But as Miller hurried away, Margaret seized Renee's wrist.

“Detective, you have to understand something. Victor isn't the person you should be afraid of.””

“Who should I be afraid of?””

Margaret's gaze shifted toward the elevator.

Toward the floor where Emily and Noah were recovering.

Then she whispered the words that made Renee's blood run cold.

“Someone has been living in that house for six months.””

Renee stared at her.

“Who?””

Margaret's lips parted.

Before she could answer, Renee's phone rang.

It was Miller.

His voice was breathless.

“Detective, we're at the Jackson property.””

“What did you find?””

“The front door was open. There's blood on the basement stairs.””

Renee grabbed her coat.

“Is anyone inside?””

A pause.

Then Miller answered.

“Yes.””

May you like

“Who?””

“We don't know yet. But whoever it is has been shot.””
