Chapter 8: The Wedding I Didn’t Recognize

I arrived at the venue thirty minutes later.

The place looked exactly how I had imagined.

White flowers.

Golden lights.

A beautiful aisle stretching toward the front.

Everything was perfect.

Except I wasn’t.

I stood outside the doors, staring at the room where I was supposed to begin the happiest chapter of my life.

Instead, I felt like I was walking into a trap.

Ryan followed behind me.

“Emma, please.””

I didn’t look at him.

“Please what?””

“Please let me explain.””

“You had six months.””

“I was trying to protect us.””

“No.””

I turned toward him.

“You were protecting yourself.””

His face fell.

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I almost smiled.

“Ryan, I don’t even know what’s real anymore.””

He reached for my hand.

I stepped away.

Before he could say anything else, Michael approached.

He looked proud.

Like he had saved the day.

“I paid the balance.””

I stared at him.

“I know.””

“I wanted you to have the wedding you dreamed of.””

“Why?””

His smile faded.

“What?””

“Why now?””

“Because I’m your father.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word surprised even me.

“No?””

“You don’t get to disappear for twenty-six years, return when there’s something valuable attached to my name, and expect me to call that love.””

Michael looked wounded.

“I made mistakes.””

“You made choices.””

The words landed.

Hard.

He looked away.

“I know I can’t change the past.””

“No.””

I looked toward the decorated hall.

“But you keep trying to control my future.””

He didn’t answer.

Then someone called my name.

“Emma.””

I turned.

Daniel stood near the entrance.

He looked uncomfortable.

Like he wasn’t sure he belonged there.

My heart broke.

Because he belonged there more than anyone.

I walked toward him.

“I’m sorry.””

He looked confused.

“For what?””

“For making you feel like you weren’t my father.””

His eyes softened.

“Emma…”

“I was so focused on the person who left that I forgot the person who stayed.””

Daniel looked away.

And I saw him wipe his eyes.

“You don’t have to say anything.””

“I do.””

I took his hand.

“You’re walking me down the aisle.””

He froze.

“Emma.””

“I know what I said yesterday.””

“No, you wanted your biological father.””

“I wanted a dream.””

I swallowed.

“But I need my dad.””

Daniel looked at me.

For the first time in days, he smiled.

A real smile.

Then a voice interrupted.

“Emma.””

Michael.

I turned.

He looked furious.

Not sad.

Not hurt.

Angry.

“You can’t do this.””

I frowned.

“Do what?””

“Change everything now.””

“I’m choosing who walks beside me.””

His jaw tightened.

“You’re making a mistake.””

The words chilled me.

Because they weren’t emotional.

They were possessive.

Like I was something he owned.

Daniel stepped between us.

“Enough.””

Michael glared at him.

“You always thought you were better than me.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“I just showed up.””

The room went silent.

Michael looked away.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“Ask him why he never told you about the adoption papers.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel went completely still.

My heart sank.

“Adoption papers?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

And I knew.

Another secret.

Another piece missing.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

“I can explain.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No more explanations after the damage is done.””

Michael watched me carefully.

Like he knew he had finally found the crack.

“Emma,” Daniel said.

“I didn’t want to hide anything from you.””

“But you did.””

The wedding music started playing inside the venue.

Guests were arriving.

Everyone was waiting.

But I couldn’t move.

Because suddenly the question wasn’t who would walk me down the aisle.

The question was:

Who had I been my entire life?

I looked at Daniel.

“Were you ever legally my father?””

His silence answered.

And then he said:

May you like

“No.””

My heart shattered.
