Chapter 6: The Wedding Guest Nobody Invited

The morning of my wedding arrived with a sky so gray it looked like the world was mourning.

I used to think wedding days were supposed to feel magical.

Like the universe paused to celebrate two people finding each other.

But standing in my bedroom, surrounded by flowers and makeup brushes, I felt like I was standing in the middle of a storm.

My phone sat on the table.

Three missed calls from Michael.

Two from Daniel.

And one message from Ryan.

*We need to talk before the ceremony.*

I stared at those words.

Before the ceremony.

Not before the wedding.

Not before we got married.

Before everything changed.

A knock came at my door.

“Emma?””

It was my mother.

I wiped my face quickly.

“Come in.””

She stepped inside.

The moment she saw me, she knew.

“You know.””

I looked at her.

“You knew everything.””

Her eyes filled with regret.

“Not everything.””

“Enough.””

She sat beside me.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed softly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Protecting me would have been letting me know the truth and standing beside me.””

She looked down.

“You’re right.””

That was the first honest answer I had heard all week.

“Mom.””

“Yes?””

“What money was Daniel talking about?””

Her face changed.

And I knew.

Another secret.

“I don’t want to hear another excuse.””

She closed her eyes.

“Michael gave me money.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“When he came back.””

“How much?””

“Twenty thousand dollars.””

I stepped away.

“For what?””

“He wanted to help with the wedding.””

My stomach turned.

“And you took it?””

“I didn’t know what he wanted.””

“You knew enough to hide it.””

She started crying.

“I was afraid.””

“Everyone is always afraid.””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

“But somehow I’m always the one who pays for everyone else’s fear.””

My mother covered her face.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at the mirror.

At the dress.

At the person staring back at me.

I barely recognized her.

Then the doorbell rang.

My mother froze.

“Who is that?””

I walked downstairs.

And my heart stopped.

Michael stood at the front door.

Wearing a suit.

Holding flowers.

Smiling like this was the happiest day of his life.

“Emma.””

I stared at him.

“What are you doing here?””

His smile faded.

“I came to see my daughter.””

“You came after twenty-six years.””

“I know.””

“You came three months before my wedding.””

“I know.””

“And now you’re here on the morning of my wedding?””

His face tightened.

“I wanted to talk.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You wanted something.””

His eyes changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

A flash of irritation.

Gone in a second.

“Emma, that’s unfair.””

“Is it?””

I held up my phone.

“Why did you text Ryan?””

Michael went still.

“I can explain.””

“Why?””

He looked away.

“Because I was worried.””

“About what?””

He didn’t answer.

Then Ryan walked into the hallway.

And I realized he had been standing there the entire time.

“Emma…”

I looked at him.

“You knew he was coming?””

Ryan hesitated.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

“How long?””

“Emma—”

“How long have you both been planning this?””

Michael stepped forward.

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

Neither man spoke.

And in that silence, I finally understood.

This wasn’t about a wedding.

It wasn’t about an aisle.

It wasn’t about a $40,000 bill.

There was something much bigger happening.

Something everyone knew except me.

Then Ryan slowly reached into his jacket pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I didn’t want you to see this.””

My hands shook.

“What is it?””

He looked at Michael.

Then at me.

“It’s the reason your father came back.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a copy of a legal document.

The title made my blood run cold.

*Inheritance Claim Agreement.*

And underneath it was my name.

May you like

But the signature at the bottom wasn’t mine.

It belonged to Daniel.
