Chapter 8: The Agreement That Could Destroy Them

Grant Miller removed his leather gloves and placed them neatly inside his coat pocket.

He looked nothing like the kind of man Emily expected to be involved in a family scandal.

His suit was perfectly tailored. His hair was silver at the temples. A polished watch rested beneath his cuff.

He carried no visible weapon.

He didn't need one.

His smile was enough to make Emily uncomfortable.

“Miss Carter,” he said.

“I've been hoping to meet you.””

Emily remained seated.

“Why?””

Grant glanced at Margaret.

“Perhaps we should speak privately.””

Margaret immediately stepped between them.

“Emily is represented by counsel. Anything you have to say can be said in my presence.””

Grant smiled.

“Of course. I respect that.””

He placed a business card on the desk.

“I'm here because I believe there's been a misunderstanding concerning Daniel Walker's estate.””

Margaret didn't touch the card.

“What misunderstanding?””

Grant folded his hands.

“Daniel made several financial arrangements over the years. Some of them were questionable. I believe the current situation has been created by incomplete information.””

Emily stared at him.

“My mother said you and my father accused her of stealing money.””

Grant's smile faded slightly.

“Your mother was under considerable stress.””

“She was telling the truth.””

“Were you old enough to understand the financial arrangements at the time?””

“No. But I'm old enough to read.””

Margaret hid a small smile.

Grant turned toward Emily.

“Your father is concerned about your future. He wants to make sure you aren't being manipulated.””

Emily laughed without humor.

“He came to my graduation with a lawyer and two security guards. He didn't ask how I was doing. He asked me to sign away control of my inheritance.””

Grant sighed.

“People sometimes make mistakes.””

“Eleven years isn't a mistake.””

The room fell silent.

Margaret finally spoke.

“Mr. Miller, what exactly do you want?””

Grant reached into his briefcase.

He produced a document.

“A settlement proposal.””

Margaret took it and began reading.

Emily watched her expression change.

“What is it?””

Margaret continued scanning the pages.

Then she looked up.

“This is outrageous.””

Grant remained calm.

“It's a reasonable compromise.””

Margaret placed the document on the desk.

“Your proposal transfers seventy percent of the trust to a holding company controlled by Mr. Carter. In exchange, Emily receives a small monthly allowance.””

Grant shrugged.

“It's a way to preserve the capital.””

Emily stared at him.

“Seventy percent?””

“You're young, Miss Carter. Six hundred thousand dollars is a tremendous responsibility.””

“Then why did you come to take it?””

Grant's smile disappeared.

For the first time, his voice became cold.

“Because your father has a legitimate interest in the matter.””

Margaret stood.

“Your visit is over.””

Grant slowly collected his briefcase.

“Before I go, I would advise everyone involved to be careful. There are things in Daniel's records that could damage more than one reputation.””

He looked directly at Emily.

“Your mother wasn't always honest about what happened.””

Emily stood.

“Don't talk about my mother.””

Grant paused.

Then he leaned slightly toward her.

“Ask Jace what happened to Daniel's first business.””

He straightened his jacket and walked out.

Emily stared at the door.

“What did he mean?””

Margaret looked troubled.

“I don't know.””

But Emily had a feeling Jace did.

An hour later, Jace arrived.

Marcus followed him carrying a small metal case.

Jace immediately noticed Emily's expression.

“What happened?””

“Grant Miller came here.””

Jace's face hardened.

“What did he say?””

Emily repeated everything.

When she mentioned Daniel's first business, Jace stopped moving.

Marcus looked at him.

“You never told her?””

Jace shook his head.

“Because I didn't know the whole story.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Tell me.””

Jace sat down.

“Daniel started a repair business when he was twenty-four. Richard helped him secure investors. Grant handled the finances.””

“What happened?””

“The company collapsed. Daniel was blamed for mismanaging funds.””

Emily frowned.

“But you said Daniel had his own garage.””

“He rebuilt his life afterward. But he never recovered financially.””

“Was he guilty?””

Jace looked at her.

“I don't believe so.””

“Why?””

“Because I found records showing money was transferred out of the business before it collapsed. The transfers were authorized using Daniel's name, but he claimed he never approved them.””

Emily felt a chill.

“Richard?””

“That's what Daniel believed.””

Jace opened the metal case Marcus had brought.

Inside were old photographs, a notebook, and a brass locker key.

“Marcus found this in Daniel's old workshop.””

He held up the key.

“Number 314.””

Emily reached for it.

“That's the number in my mother's notebook.””

Jace nodded.

“The workshop has an old storage locker. We checked it this afternoon.””

“And?””

Jace opened the notebook.

“There was an envelope inside. But the original agreement wasn't there.””

Emily's shoulders dropped.

“Then where is it?””

Jace turned to a photograph.

It showed Daniel standing beside Sarah outside the community center.

On the back, someone had written an address.

*Westbridge Community Center. Basement archive. Cabinet 14.*

Emily looked up.

“That's where my mother volunteered.””

“Exactly.””

Margaret examined the photograph.

“That's a public building. We can request access through the center's director.””

Jace nodded.

“Already arranged.””

They reached the community center shortly before closing.

The building was old, with peeling paint and a narrow staircase leading to the basement.

The director, an elderly woman named Helen Brooks, greeted them.

“Daniel Walker,” she said when Jace showed her the photograph.

“I remember him. He fixed our heating system for free.””

Emily smiled.

“That sounds like him.””

Helen led them downstairs.

The basement smelled of dust and old paper.

Cabinet 14 stood against the far wall.

Jace unlocked it.

Inside were folders, old photographs, and a small wooden box.

Emily carefully opened the box.

There was a sealed document.

A photograph of Richard Carter.

And a cassette tape.

On the cassette label, in Daniel's handwriting, were the words:

*RICHARD CARTER — ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.*

Jace looked at Emily.

“We found it.””

But before anyone could celebrate, Helen noticed something.

“Wait.””

She pointed to the bottom of the box.

A second envelope had been taped underneath.

It was addressed to Jace.

He carefully removed it.

Inside was a short letter.

Jace,

If you've found this, then Richard has returned for Emily. I am sorry I didn't tell you everything when I was alive.

The agreement proves Richard was paid to abandon Sarah and Emily. But there is something more important.

The person who arranged the payment wasn't Richard's employer.

It was someone inside our family.

Jace read the final line.

Then his face went completely still.

Emily stepped closer.

“Who?””

Jace looked at the letter again.

The name was written clearly.

*WILLIAM WALKER.*

His father.

Jace's father had been the one who arranged the payment.

The same man who had raised him to believe family always came first.

The same man whose company had financed Daniel's business.

And the same man who had died believing his secrets were buried forever.

Emily looked at Jace.

“Your father knew?””

Jace nodded slowly.

“I think he did.””

Marcus picked up the cassette.

“Then we should hear what's on this.””

Jace turned it over.

A date had been written on the back.

It was dated two weeks before Daniel died.

Emily's hands trembled.

“Can we play it?””

Helen led them upstairs to an old office where a cassette player was kept.

Jace pressed PLAY.

Static crackled.

Then a familiar voice filled the room.

Daniel Walker.

“If you're listening to this, then I didn't get the chance to explain everything myself.””

A pause.

Then Daniel continued.

“Richard Carter didn't just receive money to leave his family. He agreed to do something much worse. And my father made sure nobody would ever discover it.””

Emily gripped the edge of the desk.

The recording continued.

“Sarah never knew the full truth. She thought Richard abandoned her because of money. But the real reason was that Richard had discovered something about Emily's birth.””

The tape crackled.

Daniel's voice became quieter.

“Something that could destroy the Walker family.””

Then came a sentence that made everyone in the room freeze.

“Emily Carter was never supposed to inherit the money. Because the money was never mine to give her.””

Jace stared at the cassette player.

Marcus whispered, “What the hell?””

The recording continued.

“The money belonged to Emily's mother. And Sarah had the right to claim it because…”

A sudden burst of static swallowed the next few words.

Then the tape stopped.

Emily stared at the machine.

“What did he say?””

Jace pressed the button again.

Nothing.

The cassette had reached its end.

But someone had recorded over the remaining section.

And whoever had done it had deliberately removed the one piece of information they needed most.

That night, Emily sat in the passenger seat of Jace's truck.

She watched the streetlights pass.

“Jace?””

“Yeah?””

“Do you think your father was a bad man?””

Jace kept his eyes on the road.

“I think he made choices I never knew about.””

“Will you help me find out what happened?””

Jace looked at her.

“Every step of the way.””

Emily nodded.

Then her phone buzzed.

An unknown number.

A message appeared.

*Your mother didn't die the way you think she did.*

A second message followed.

*Ask Jace why Daniel was investigating her death.*

Emily slowly turned toward him.

“Jace?””

He glanced over.

“What?””

She showed him the screen.

His hands tightened around the steering wheel.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he pulled the truck to the side of the road.

“Emily, there's something I've been afraid to tell you.””

She felt her heart pound.

“What?””

Jace looked directly at her.

“Three days before your mother died, Daniel received a phone call from the hospital.””

Emily stopped breathing.

“What did they tell him?””

May you like

Jace swallowed.

“They said Sarah's medical records had been changed.””
