Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Disappearance

The Iron Ravens' clubhouse was nothing like Emily expected.

She had imagined a dark warehouse filled with angry men, loud music, and dangerous-looking equipment.

Instead, the building smelled of coffee, leather, and fresh paint.

There were photographs on the walls.

Old motorcycles.

Children's birthday parties.

A Christmas dinner where several bikers wore ridiculous Santa hats.

One photograph caught Emily's attention.

Jace stood beside a young woman holding a baby.

He looked almost unrecognizable.

He was smiling.

“Who's that?”” Emily asked.

Jace followed her gaze.

“My sister. Rachel.””

“And the baby?””

“My nephew.””

Emily studied the photograph.

“You look different.””

“People keep telling me that.””

Marcus appeared carrying two mugs.

“That's because he used to have hair.””

Jace gave him a warning look.

Marcus grinned.

“Long hair. Terrible choices. Worse music.””

Emily laughed softly.

For a few minutes, the tension of the afternoon seemed to disappear.

Then Jace placed a thick folder on the table.

“Emily, I think it's time you knew what happened.””

She sat down.

Jace opened the folder.

Inside were bank statements, legal documents, old photographs, and several letters.

He pulled out a photograph of a younger Richard Carter.

In it, Richard stood beside Emily's mother outside a house.

Her mother looked beautiful.

Her father looked serious.

“Your parents met when they were young,” Jace explained.

“Richard was ambitious. He wanted money, influence, and connections. Sarah wanted a quiet life.””

Emily touched the photograph.

“My mother never showed me this.””

“There's more.””

Jace placed another document on the table.

It was a bank statement.

The name at the top read:

*SARAH CARTER.*

Below it was a list of withdrawals.

Emily leaned closer.

“What am I looking at?””

“Your mother inherited money from her parents. Not a fortune, but enough to buy a small house and give herself some security.””

“And Dad took it?””

“Not exactly.””

Jace pointed to several transactions.

“Richard persuaded her to put the money into a business venture. He promised it would grow. Instead, he transferred most of it into an account under his control.””

Emily frowned.

“Why would she let him?””

“Because she trusted him.””

Jace turned another page.

“Your mother discovered the transfers after she became pregnant with you.””

Emily's throat tightened.

“What did she do?””

“She confronted him. He told her the money was gone. He promised to repay it.””

“Did he?””

“No.””

Jace placed a letter beside the bank statement.

“This is a copy of the separation agreement.””

Emily picked it up.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

*The father agrees to waive all financial claims concerning the child in exchange for the mother's agreement not to pursue further action regarding the transferred funds.*

Emily looked up.

“He signed this?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed your mother had nothing left to take from him.””

Emily stared at the signature.

Richard Carter.

The same man who had appeared that afternoon asking for access to her inheritance.

Her hands began to shake.

“So he didn't leave because he didn't want me?””

Jace paused.

“Emily, I can't tell you what he felt. But I can tell you what he did.””

He turned another page.

There was an official record showing that Richard had moved to another state shortly after Emily's birth.

“He signed away his financial responsibilities. He stopped paying support. He changed his address. Your mother never heard from him again.””

Emily looked down.

“Why didn't she take him to court?””

“She tried.””

Jace placed another document in front of her.

A letter from a legal aid office.

Emily read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

Her mother had been unable to afford the legal costs. Richard had threatened to challenge custody and claim that Sarah was financially unstable.

The case had gone nowhere.

Emily's eyes filled.

“She was working all the time because of him?””

“Your mother worked hard because she wanted you to have opportunities. Don't let him take that away from her.””

Emily wiped her cheeks.

“What about Daniel?””

Jace leaned back.

“Daniel learned about the situation through your mother. He was furious. He offered to help her, but she refused to accept money for herself.””

“Why?””

“She said she had already asked too much of the people around her.””

Emily smiled sadly.

“That sounds like her.””

Jace nodded.

“Daniel eventually established a trust in your name. He wanted to make sure you'd have something waiting for you when you were old enough.””

Emily looked at the documents.

“Six hundred and forty thousand dollars.””

“That's what it's worth now.””

“Why would he do that for me?””

Jace was quiet for a moment.

“Because your mother saved his life in a different way. And because he believed kindness should never be forgotten.””

Emily looked at the photograph of her mother and Daniel.

Then she noticed a small handwritten note attached to the back.

She carefully turned it over.

The note read:

For Emily, when the time comes. Make sure she gets to choose her own future.

Emily smiled through her tears.

“He wanted me to go to university.””

Jace nodded.

“He did.””

She looked at the documents again.

“But why is my father coming back now?””

Jace's expression hardened.

“Because the trust has reached the age where it can be transferred into your name. The legal notice went out recently.””

“So he found out?””

“Apparently.””

Emily stared at the table.

All those years.

No calls.

No birthday cards.

No Christmas presents.

But the moment money appeared, her father remembered her name.

Marcus pulled out a chair.

“There's something else, kid.””

Emily looked up.

“What?””

“Richard wasn't just looking for money today. He was testing whether you'd sign without asking questions.””

Jace nodded.

“And now he knows you won't.””

Emily swallowed.

“What happens next?””

Jace closed the folder.

“Your father has a lawyer. We have one too. We'll make sure everything is handled legally.””

Emily looked at him.

“Why are you doing all this?””

Jace held her gaze.

“Because I made a promise to my brother. And because your mother believed you deserved people who would stand beside you.””

Emily lowered her eyes.

For the first time in years, she allowed herself to imagine having a family again.

Then Jace's phone rang.

He answered.

“Walker.””

His expression changed.

“What do you mean, someone filed a petition?””

He listened.

Then stood.

“Send me the documents immediately.””

Emily felt her stomach drop.

“What happened?””

Jace slowly lowered the phone.

“Richard has filed an emergency custody petition.””

Emily stared at him.

“But I'm sixteen!””

“I know.””

“He hasn't been my father for eleven years!””

“I know, Emily.””

Marcus swore under his breath.

Jace looked at the documents on the table.

“Your father is claiming your mother was mentally unstable when she signed the trust agreement.””

Emily went pale.

“My mother wasn't unstable.””

“I know.””

“He's lying!””

Jace placed a hand on the table.

“There's something worse.””

He turned the phone toward her.

On the screen was a photograph of an old medical document.

A signature appeared at the bottom.

Sarah Carter.

And beneath it was a statement claiming that Emily's mother had been unable to make sound legal decisions during the final months of her life.

Emily shook her head.

“That isn't true.””

Jace looked at her.

“Then we need to find the original records.””

Emily stared at the signature.

May you like

Because she recognized something about it.

Her mother had never signed her name that way.
