Chapter 4: The Secret Message

Amara read the message three times.

*DON'T TRUST YOUR FATHER. ASK HIM WHY HE LET VANESSA INTO YOUR MOTHER'S ROOM THE NIGHT SHE DIED.*

Her fingers went numb around the phone.

For four years, she had believed her mother's final night was exactly as Daniel had described it. Her mother had become seriously ill, her father had rushed her to the hospital, and Amara had stayed with a neighbor until he returned with the news that changed her life forever.

Vanessa had entered their family months later.

At least, that was what Amara remembered.

She stared at the message again.

Whoever had sent it knew something about her mother's death.

Something her father had never told her.

“Amara!””

Vanessa's sharp voice pulled her back to the present.

“Put that phone away and come downstairs. Your father is waiting.””

Amara locked her screen.

“Who sent this?””

Vanessa glanced at the phone.

“What?””

“Who sent this message?””

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Amara held up the screen.

Vanessa read the words.

For one brief moment, the color drained from her face.

Then she snatched the phone.

“Give that to me!””

Amara yanked it back.

“Why are you scared?””

“Because someone is deliberately trying to destroy this family!””

“Then why did you look like you'd seen a ghost?””

Vanessa grabbed Amara's shoulders.

“Listen to me carefully. You will not repeat that message to your father. Do you understand?””

Amara pushed her hands away.

“Why? What happened the night Mom died?””

“Nothing happened!””

“Then tell me why someone would send me this!””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“Because people know you're vulnerable. You're sixteen, you're emotional, and you desperately want to believe everyone is against you. Someone is exploiting that.””

“Is that what you told Dad when I said you were treating me badly?””

Vanessa slapped her.

The sound cracked through the room.

Amara stumbled sideways, one hand flying to her cheek.

For a moment, Vanessa seemed startled by her own action. Then her expression hardened.

“You will not speak to me that way again.””

Amara stared at her.

The sting in her cheek was nothing compared to the sudden certainty settling inside her.

Vanessa wasn't simply afraid of the footage.

She was afraid of what might happen if Amara started asking questions about the past.

Downstairs, the front door opened.

A familiar voice filled the hallway.

“Vanessa? Brielle? Amara?””

Her father's voice.

Amara rushed past her stepmother.

“Daddy!””

Daniel stood in the entrance wearing his charcoal travel suit, one hand gripping a leather briefcase. His face brightened when he saw his daughter, but the smile disappeared as soon as he noticed her red cheek and tearful eyes.

“Sweetheart, what happened?””

Amara ran into his arms.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak. She pressed her face against his jacket and breathed in the familiar scent of his cologne.

He held her tightly.

“Hey. Hey, I'm here. What's wrong?””

Vanessa descended the stairs behind them.

“Daniel, thank goodness you're home,” she said, her voice trembling.

“We've had a terrible morning.””

Daniel looked from his wife to his daughter.

“Why is Amara crying?””

Vanessa pressed a hand to her chest.

“She became hysterical when she learned the security company was coming to remove an unnecessary camera. She accused me of spying on her, and then she started making horrible accusations about your first wife.””

Amara pulled away.

“That's a lie!””

Daniel raised a hand.

“Both of you. Stop.””

Brielle appeared behind Vanessa, wearing an oversized sweater and a carefully arranged expression of concern.

“Dad, Mom was only trying to help,” she said.

“Amara has been acting strange all night. She's obsessed with that camera.””

Daniel set his briefcase on the console table.

“Amara, I need you to tell me exactly what happened.””

Amara opened her mouth.

Vanessa interrupted.

“She destroyed her own violin, Daniel. She threw it against the wall when I asked her to stop playing.””

Amara stared at her stepmother in disbelief.

“You broke it!””

“Please don't shout at me.””

“You grabbed it and smashed it!””

Brielle shook her head sadly.

“Dad, I was there. Amara became angry and started waving it around. Mom tried to take it away before she hurt herself.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Is that true?””

“No!”” Amara cried.

“The camera recorded everything!””

Vanessa looked away.

Brielle went silent.

Daniel slowly turned toward his wife.

“What camera?””

“The one in Amara's bedroom,” Vanessa answered.

“You know the security system you installed. I've arranged to have it removed because it makes everyone uncomfortable.””

Daniel's face changed.

“Did you touch Amara's violin?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Daniel, I was trying to maintain peace in the house.””

“That's not what I asked.””

“I may have taken it from her, but—”

“Did you break it?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I lost my temper. I'm sorry. But you don't understand what I've been dealing with.””

Daniel looked at Amara.

“Show me the footage.””

Amara hurried upstairs and returned with her laptop. She placed it on the dining table and opened the saved recording.

Nobody spoke as the video played.

Vanessa stormed into the bedroom.

The violin struck the wall.

Amara screamed.

Brielle laughed and filmed her.

Then came Vanessa's words about Amara's father caring more about his wife than his daughter.

Daniel's face grew increasingly pale.

When the recording ended, he looked at Brielle.

“You laughed while she cried?””

Brielle's mouth fell open.

“Dad, it was just a joke.””

“A joke?””

“I didn't break anything!””

“You watched your stepsister's property being destroyed and laughed at her.””

Brielle's eyes filled with tears.

“I was scared of Mom! I didn't know what to do!””

Vanessa whipped around.

“Don't you dare put this on me!””

Brielle recoiled.

Daniel stood so abruptly that his chair scraped across the floor.

“Enough!””

The entire house fell silent.

He looked at his wife with an expression Amara had never seen before.

“I trusted you to care for my daughter.””

“And I have!”” Vanessa protested.

“You have no idea how difficult she's become.””

“Then why did you tell me the violin was an accident?””

Vanessa froze.

Amara looked at her father.

“What?””

Daniel opened his briefcase and removed a printed email.

“Last night, I received a message from the security system. Someone attempted to delete this recording. When I checked the access history, I discovered a second administrator account created under my name.””

He placed the email on the table.

“I didn't create that account.””

Vanessa's lips parted.

Daniel continued.

“And the account's recovery email belongs to Brielle.””

Brielle stepped backward.

“I can explain!””

“Then explain.””

She glanced at her mother.

Vanessa shook her head almost imperceptibly.

Daniel noticed.

“Don't look at her. Look at me.””

Brielle's chin trembled.

“Mom said it was necessary. She said she needed to protect herself in case Amara started telling lies about her.””

“Protect herself from what?””

Brielle didn't answer.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Brielle, I am asking you a question.””

She swallowed.

“Mom said there were things about your first wife that you didn't want anyone to know.””

The room went deathly quiet.

Daniel slowly straightened.

“What things?””

Brielle looked toward Vanessa again.

This time, her mother said nothing.

Daniel turned to his wife.

“What did you tell my daughter about my first wife?””

Vanessa's expression became rigid.

“Daniel, this is not the time.””

“Then tell me when the time will be.””

He picked up Amara's laptop and closed it.

“Until I understand why you created a secret account to monitor my daughter, nobody is touching another camera in this house.””

He looked at the security technician, who had been standing awkwardly near the entrance.

“Please leave the equipment as it is. I'll contact your company directly.””

The technician nodded and departed.

Daniel turned back to Vanessa.

“You and I need to talk.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Fine. But before you start treating me like a criminal, perhaps you should ask your daughter why she's receiving anonymous messages about the night her mother died.””

Amara's heart stopped.

Daniel turned toward her.

“What message?””

Amara looked at her phone.

She had never shown it to anyone.

Vanessa couldn't have known about it unless—

A new notification appeared on the screen.

Another message from the unknown number.

*HE'S LYING ABOUT THE LAST NIGHT. ASK HIM WHAT HE TOOK FROM YOUR MOTHER'S HOSPITAL ROOM.*

Amara slowly raised her eyes to her father.

“Daddy,” she whispered, “what happened the night Mom died?””

May you like

Daniel's face lost all color.

And for the first time in Amara's life, her father couldn't look her in the eyes.
