Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Camera

At 7:40 the next morning, Amara sat on the edge of her bed wearing her competition dress.
The pale blue fabric had been chosen by her mother years earlier, when Amara first qualified for a youth orchestra program. Her mother had promised that one day she would wear it on a stage worthy of her talent.
Amara smoothed the skirt over her knees.
Beside her lay the broken violin.
She had carefully wrapped every piece in a soft cloth, unwilling to throw away even a splinter.
Her phone buzzed.
A message from the competition coordinator appeared on the screen.
Good morning, Amara. Please confirm your arrival by 9:30 a.m. If you require any accommodation, let us know immediately.
She stared at the message.
She had spent six months preparing the piece. She knew every measure, every shift, every delicate transition. She had practiced until her fingertips hurt, sometimes repeating the same eight bars a hundred times because her mother had taught her that beautiful music was built from patience.
Now, all that work was trapped inside a body with no instrument to express it.
A knock sounded.
This time, Brielle entered without waiting for permission.
She wore a silk robe and carried a cup of coffee.
“Oh, you're still dressed?”” she asked.
“I thought you'd be crying under the blankets.””
Amara turned away.
“Get out.””
Brielle laughed and set her coffee on the desk.
“Mom says you're not allowed to leave the house today. She doesn't want you embarrassing the family by showing up at that competition without a violin.””
“Dad said he wanted to hear me play.””
“Dad says a lot of things.””
Amara faced her.
“Why did you have access to his security account?””
For the first time, Brielle's expression faltered.
“What?””
“The secondary administrator account. The recovery number is yours.””
Brielle's eyes flicked toward the laptop.
Then she laughed too loudly.
“You're seriously investigating security logs now? Wow. You really are losing it.””
“Did you help Vanessa get access to Dad's account?””
Brielle folded her arms.
“You should worry less about computers and more about your future. Because from where I'm standing, your future looks pretty pathetic.””
Amara stood.
“You knew she was going to break my violin.””
Brielle's smile vanished.
“Keep your voice down.””
“Were you waiting outside my door before she came in?””
Brielle moved closer.
“Listen carefully. Nobody forced you to become obsessed with music. Nobody forced you to spend all your time practicing. You chose to make yourself miserable.””
“My mother gave me that violin.””
“And she's dead!””
The words cut through the room.
Brielle's face tightened, but she didn't apologize.
“She's been dead for four years, Amara. You can't keep using her as an excuse to make everyone else feel guilty.””
Amara went completely still.
For a moment, she could hear only the ticking clock on her desk.
Then she pointed at the door.
“Get out.””
Brielle grabbed her coffee.
“You know what? Fine. Stay here and play with your broken toys.””
She reached the doorway, then turned back.
“By the way, Mom is having the security company remove that camera today. She says it's unnecessary.””
Amara's blood ran cold.
“You can't remove it.””
“Watch us.””
Brielle left, slamming the door behind her.
Amara immediately opened the security dashboard.
The camera was still active.
But a new service request had appeared.
*CAMERA REMOVAL SCHEDULED: 8:30 A.M.*
The request was authorized by Vanessa.
Amara checked the time.
7:46.
She had less than forty-five minutes before someone could arrive and potentially disconnect the system.
She quickly copied the relevant recordings to her external drive, then opened the administrator history again.
The secondary account had been created under Daniel's name, but the recovery email was not his.
It belonged to a private email address with the initials B.W.
Brielle Williams.
Amara's fingers trembled as she clicked the account's activity history.
There were dozens of entries.
Some showed routine camera checks. Others showed searches for specific dates and times.
One entry made her stop breathing.
*SEARCH: AMARA WILLIAMS BEDROOM CAMERA — AUDIO RECORDINGS.*
The search had been performed three weeks earlier.
Another entry showed that someone had downloaded a recording from the previous month.
Amara opened it.
The video showed her sitting at her desk, speaking to her father over a video call.
“Dad, I don't think Vanessa likes me,” the recorded Amara said.
“She keeps moving Mom's things out of the house, and yesterday she told me I should stop pretending this is still my home.””
Daniel's voice came through the laptop speakers.
“Have you talked to her about how that makes you feel?””
“I tried.””
“Then give her some time, sweetheart. She's still learning how to be a stepmother.””
The recording ended.
Amara remembered that conversation. She had cried afterward, ashamed that she couldn't explain what was happening without sounding like she was attacking her father's wife.
Someone had saved it.
Someone had listened to it.
And someone had decided it was useful.
Amara opened the next file.
It was a photograph of her mother's jewelry box.
The caption beneath it read:
If Daniel asks, say Amara gave it to me.
Amara covered her mouth.
She remembered the jewelry box disappearing. She remembered Vanessa accusing her of lying when she asked where it had gone.
She remembered Brielle wearing her mother's pearl earrings at dinner that same week.
The realization made her feel physically sick.
They hadn't merely been bullying her.
They had been collecting information, manipulating conversations, and preparing explanations in advance.
But why?
What could they possibly gain by making her look unstable?
A sound came from the hallway.
Amara minimized the security dashboard just as Vanessa opened the door.
“Good morning,” Vanessa said brightly.
“Ready for your big day?””
Amara stared at her.
“Why did you create a security account under Dad's name?””
Vanessa's smile froze.
“What are you talking about?””
“I know about the secondary administrator account. I know Brielle's email is connected to it.””
For several seconds, Vanessa said nothing.
Then she walked into the room and closed the door.
“You've been digging through things you don't understand.””
“I saw the recordings.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“What recordings?””
“The ones where you and Brielle discussed my mother's jewelry. The ones where you searched my bedroom camera. The ones where you recorded my conversations with Dad.””
Vanessa's hands tightened around her handbag.
Amara had never seen her stepmother look genuinely frightened before.
Now, the fear was unmistakable.
“You will delete those files,” Vanessa said.
“No.””
“You will delete them immediately.””
“Dad needs to see them.””
Vanessa dropped her handbag onto the bed.
“Your father doesn't need another reason to worry about you.””
“Then why are you so scared of him seeing the truth?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Because you have no idea what you're accusing me of.””
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
A car horn sounded from the driveway.
She glanced toward the window.
Amara followed her gaze.
A black sedan had pulled up outside, and a technician in a gray uniform was walking toward the front door with a toolbox.
The security company had arrived early.
Vanessa quickly reached for Amara's laptop.
Amara pulled it away.
“Don't touch it!””
Vanessa grabbed her wrist.
“Give me the computer.””
“No!””
The bedroom door suddenly swung open.
Brielle stood there, her phone clutched in one hand.
“Mom,” she said urgently.
“You need to come downstairs. Now.””
Vanessa released Amara.
“What happened?””
Brielle looked at Amara, then back at her mother.
“Dad just called.””
Amara's heart leaped.
“Dad?””
Brielle nodded, her face pale.
“He's not coming home tomorrow afternoon.””
Vanessa's expression drained of color.
“He's already landed,” Brielle whispered.
“And he's on his way here.””
For one brief second, hope rushed through Amara so powerfully that she almost began to cry.
Then Brielle spoke again.
“He said he wants everyone in the living room. He said it's about the security footage.””
Vanessa turned slowly toward Amara.
The mask of the concerned stepmother had disappeared.
In its place was something cold and furious.
“What exactly,” Vanessa whispered, “did you send your father?””
Amara looked down at the external drive hidden in her schoolbag.
She hadn't sent him the footage.
Not yet.
Which meant someone else had.
May you like
And when Amara opened her phone, she discovered a message from an unknown number.
*DON'T TRUST YOUR FATHER. ASK HIM WHY HE LET VANESSA INTO YOUR MOTHER'S ROOM THE NIGHT SHE DIED.*
