Chapter 7: The Name Behind the Money
My father stared at the screen as though the letters might rearrange themselves into something less terrible.
“Who owns the company?”” Madison asked.
He didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he called Michael again.
“I need you to verify the registered owner, the date the company was established, and every transaction connected to that account. Don't transfer anything. Don't contact the owner yet. Just get me the records.””
He ended the call.
I sat beside him in the parked car outside the investment firm's office, my schoolbag pressed against my knees. Madison was in the back seat, nervously twisting the strap of her handbag.
“Dad,” I whispered, “is someone stealing my money?””
He turned toward me.
“I don't know the full extent of what's happened yet. But I promise you that I won't let anyone take advantage of you again.””
“What if it's someone we know?””
His expression tightened.
“Then knowing them won't make their actions acceptable.””
Ten minutes later, Michael sent the information.
My father opened the document.
The company was called Carter Family Ventures LLC.
Its registered owner was Ethan Carter.
Vanessa's twelve-year-old son.
Madison stared at the screen.
“Ethan? He's a kid!””
“The company was registered in his name,” my father replied.
“That doesn't necessarily mean he established or controlled it.””
He scrolled down.
The company had been formed eight months earlier. Its business description listed educational consulting and family investment management.
There was no website, no office address beyond a registered agent, and no record of actual business activity.
Yet the company had received several substantial transfers.
My father's fingers tightened around his phone.
“This isn't an investment business. At least, there's no evidence that it operates as one.””
Madison began shaking her head.
“Mom must have done this. Ethan wouldn't even know how to register a company.””
“Then we need to establish what he knows and who has been operating it.””
We drove home in silence.
When we arrived, Vanessa was in the kitchen, preparing lunch as though nothing had happened. Ethan sat at the counter, eating cereal and watching videos on his phone.
“Where have you been?”” Vanessa asked without looking up.
My father placed his phone on the counter.
“Who owns Carter Family Ventures?””
The spoon stopped halfway to Ethan's mouth.
Vanessa slowly turned around.
“What?””
“Carter Family Ventures LLC. Registered eight months ago in Ethan's name. It received a request for a forty-thousand-dollar transfer from an investment account connected to Lily.””
Vanessa set down her knife.
“You've been digging through private information?””
“I am investigating money taken from my daughter's education fund.””
“You have no right to accuse me of anything!””
“Then explain the company.””
Vanessa glanced at Ethan.
“Ethan, go upstairs.””
He immediately put down his bowl.
“But Mom—”
“Upstairs. Now!””
My father stepped in front of him.
“No. Ethan can stay. Nobody is accusing him of wrongdoing. We need to understand what happened.””
Ethan looked frightened.
“I don't know anything about forty thousand dollars.””
Vanessa's face flushed.
“Of course you don't. Your father is trying to confuse you.””
My father turned to her.
“Did you establish the company?””
“No.””
“Did you authorize the transfers?””
“No!””
“Then why is it registered in your son's name?””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Because I wanted to create something for his future. Is that a crime?””
“Not if it is done lawfully. But why was money connected to Lily being transferred to it?””
Vanessa's eyes darted toward the phone.
For the first time, she looked genuinely cornered.
“I was going to explain everything.””
“You've said that about every transaction we've discovered.””
She slammed both hands onto the counter.
“Because you won't let me finish a sentence!””
“Then finish one now. Tell me the truth.””
Vanessa's lips trembled with anger.
“I used the money to build a future for all three children!””
I stared at her.
“All three?””
“Yes, Lily! You heard me!””
“Then why did you change the beneficiary on the investment account to Madison?””
Vanessa looked at me sharply.
“Because Madison is older and needs financial support sooner.””
“And what about me?””
“You have your father!””
The words struck me with such force that I felt as if someone had shoved me backward.
My father went completely still.
Ethan looked down at his cereal bowl.
Madison stepped forward.
“Mom, stop saying things like that.””
Vanessa spun toward her.
“Don't tell me how to speak to my own daughter!””
“Then stop using us as excuses for what you've done!””
Vanessa's mouth fell open.
Madison was crying now, but she continued.
“You told me the money was a gift from Dad. You told me Lily already had plenty saved. You let me spend thousands of dollars while she wore clothes that barely fit her. I thought you were taking care of everything fairly.””
Vanessa pointed at her.
“You enjoyed every single thing I bought you!””
“I did!”” Madison cried.
“And I should have asked more questions. But that doesn't mean you had the right to lie to me!””
Ethan slid off his stool.
“Mom, what does this have to do with my company?””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Nothing. Go upstairs.””
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
He was trembling, but he stood his ground.
“You told me I was the owner because you wanted me to learn about business. You made me sign papers last summer.””
My father leaned forward.
“What papers?””
“Some forms. Mom said they were for a savings account. She told me not to worry about them because she would handle everything.””
Vanessa's face went white.
“Ethan, be quiet!””
He flinched.
My father immediately moved closer to him.
“Ethan, you're not in trouble for telling us what you remember. Do you understand?””
The boy nodded uncertainly.
“Did you know the company received money from Lily's account?””
“No.””
“Did you ever sign a document authorizing a forty-thousand-dollar transfer?””
Ethan shook his head.
“I don't think so.””
Vanessa grabbed her purse.
“This conversation is over.””
My father stood in her path.
“No. You're not going to frighten the children into silence. We are going to handle this through the appropriate professionals.””
She stared at him.
“You're choosing her over me.””
“I'm choosing the truth over another lie.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with furious tears.
Then she turned toward me.
“You think you're special because your father feels sorry for you. But if you knew what I sacrificed to keep this family together, you'd stop looking at me like that.””
I wanted to ask what sacrifice could justify everything she had done.
Instead, I said, “I never asked you to love me like your own daughter. I just asked you not to hurt me.””
For a moment, she looked almost shaken.
Then her expression hardened.
“You'll regret turning everyone against me.””
She walked upstairs and slammed the bedroom door.
My father immediately contacted his lawyer, who advised him to preserve every document, secure the remaining accounts where legally permitted, and report the disputed transactions to the appropriate financial institutions.
He also arranged for Ethan to speak privately with a qualified professional who could establish what documents he had signed and whether his identity had been used without his informed understanding.
That evening, Madison came into my room.
She was holding the designer handbag Vanessa had bought her.
“I don't want this anymore,” she whispered.
She placed it on my desk.
“I know giving it back won't undo anything. I just can't look at it without thinking about what Mom did.””
I looked at the bag.
“It's not your fault that she lied to you.””
“But I knew you were being treated differently. I saw your shoes. I heard the things she said to you. I kept quiet because I was afraid of losing my place in the family.””
She wiped her face.
“I am sorry, Lily.””
This time, I believed her.
I didn't hug her. I wasn't ready for that.
But I moved over on the bed, making room for her to sit.
We remained there quietly until my father called us downstairs.
He had received another message from Michael.
The accountant had traced the forty-thousand-dollar transfer request to a second account.
It wasn't owned by Ethan.
It was controlled by a company registered under Vanessa's maiden name.
And according to the preliminary records, the account had received money from our household for nearly two years.
My father stared at the figures.
Then he looked at us.
“Tomorrow, we're going to find out where every dollar went.””
For the first time, I realized that the old clothes on the dining table had exposed something much larger than a cruel stepmother.
May you like
They had uncovered a financial secret that had been growing inside our family for years.
And we were finally getting close to the person who had built it.
