Chapter 4: The Gift That Was Never Hers
“Dad, please don't call the bank. Mom told me that money was a gift.””
Madison stood halfway down the staircase, gripping the railing so tightly that her knuckles had turned white. She was still wearing the pink tracksuit Vanessa had bought her that morning, and her expensive new handbag hung from her shoulder.
My father slowly lowered the document.
“A gift?”” he asked.
Madison nodded quickly.
“She said you wanted to help me get started. She told me the money was for my future.””
“How much did your mother tell you she was giving you?””
Madison swallowed.
“Twenty-five thousand dollars.””
My father's expression became frighteningly still.
“Twenty-five thousand?””
She glanced toward me, then back at him.
“She said you'd approved it. She said you didn't want me worrying about college expenses.””
I looked at the document on the table. The transfer amount was twenty-five thousand dollars, withdrawn from the education account my father had established for me after my biological mother's death.
That money had been intended to pay for my schooling, college tuition, and whatever opportunities I might need to build a future.
I had known the account existed. My father had explained it to me when I was younger, telling me that my mother had wanted me to have choices even after she was gone.
I had never imagined someone could take those choices away without telling me.
My father pushed his chair back.
“Madison, sit down.””
She obeyed, lowering herself into the chair opposite him.
“Did you know the money came from Lily's education account?””
Her lips parted.
“No.””
“Did you know that your mother had no permission to withdraw it?””
“No, Dad. I swear.””
“Then show me the messages she sent you.””
Madison hesitated.
My father held out his hand.
“Now.””
With trembling fingers, she unlocked her phone and scrolled through her messages. She placed it on the table.
The first message from Vanessa read: Your father has finally agreed to invest in your future. Don't worry about the money. You deserve this.
Another message followed.
Don't mention it to Lily. She gets jealous whenever you receive something nice.
My stomach twisted.
Then I saw a third message.
If your father asks, tell him he approved everything. He won't remember the details.
My father read the messages twice.
His jaw tightened.
“Your mother told you to lie to me.””
Madison began crying.
“I didn't know she was taking it from Lily! I thought you had money set aside for all of us!””
“You thought I had given you twenty-five thousand dollars without discussing it with you?””
“Mom said you wanted to surprise me!””
He looked at her new clothes, then at the handbag resting on the table.
“And the shopping today?””
Madison wiped her cheeks.
“Mom said she had saved for months.””
My father closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them, he looked exhausted.
“Madison, I have supported you since you were a little girl. I have paid for your schooling, your medical bills, your clothes, your holidays, and everything else your mother asked me to provide. I never treated you as less important because you weren't my biological child.””
Madison stared at the table.
“I know.””
“Then why would your mother believe she had to steal from my daughter to provide for you?””
Madison had no answer.
From the doorway came a sharp voice.
“Because he has always made Lily the center of this house!””
Vanessa marched into the kitchen, snatched the phone from the table, and placed it in her pocket.
“Give that back,” my father ordered.
“No. You are interrogating my daughter over a perfectly innocent misunderstanding!””
“Your daughter has shown me your messages.””
“Those messages prove nothing!””
“They prove you told her to lie.””
Vanessa pointed at me.
“This is what happens when you let a child manipulate you. Lily has spent years pretending to be helpless so you will keep giving her everything!””
I rose from my chair.
“I never asked you for twenty-five thousand dollars.””
“Be quiet!””
“No,” my father said sharply.
“She will speak if she wants to.””
Vanessa stared at him in disbelief.
I felt my knees trembling, but I kept my eyes on her.
“I didn't know you had taken my education money until Dad showed me the statement. I didn't even know you had gone to Mrs. Brooks to take the money I earned.””
Vanessa laughed without humor.
“You expect me to believe that you have never benefited from this household?””
“I've lived here,” I replied.
“I've eaten the food Dad paid for. I've worn the clothes he bought me. I've never denied that. But I have never taken anything that belonged to someone else.””
For a moment, her expression flickered.
Then she turned to my father.
“You want to talk about fairness? Fine. Let's talk about the years I spent raising your daughter. I cooked for her.
I washed her clothes. I took her to school. Do you think all of that was free?””
“I paid the household expenses,” he answered.
“And what about my time? My sacrifices? My career? I stayed home because you wanted someone to look after the children!””
My father stared at her.
“You stopped working because you wanted to. I never ordered you to give up your career.””
“You promised to provide for me!””
“I did. And I have. But providing for you does not mean allowing you to take my daughter's future away.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“Then perhaps I should leave.””
Nobody spoke.
She looked around the kitchen, waiting for someone to beg her to stay.
Madison wiped her nose.
“Mom, please. Just explain everything.””
Vanessa rounded on her.
“Don't you dare take his side after everything I've done for you!””
Madison recoiled.
My father stepped between them.
“Don't speak to her like that.””
Vanessa gave a disbelieving laugh.
“Unbelievable. You defend Lily when she cries, and now you defend my daughter when she does the same thing. Do you hear yourself?””
“Yes,” he replied.
“For the first time in a long time, I do.””
He took his phone from his pocket.
“I am contacting the bank. I will also speak to my lawyer about the unauthorized transfer. Until I know exactly what happened, no one is touching another dollar from that account.””
Vanessa's eyes widened.
“You wouldn't dare involve lawyers over a family disagreement.””
“This stopped being a family disagreement when you took money that wasn't yours.””
He dialed the bank.
Vanessa stood motionless, watching him explain the transfer and request that the remaining funds be secured.
Then she leaned toward me.
“You think you've won, don't you?””
I looked at her.
“No. I think Dad deserves the truth.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You have no idea what your father has been hiding from you.””
Before I could respond, she snatched her purse from the counter and stormed out of the kitchen.
The front door slammed so hard that a picture frame rattled against the wall.
Madison began sobbing.
“I didn't know,” she whispered.
“Lily, I swear I didn't know.””
I wanted to hate her. Part of me did. She had enjoyed the clothes, the shoes, and the attention while I wore a singlet that barely fit.
But she had not made the transfer herself.
“I believe you didn't know where the money came from,” I said quietly.
“But you never wondered why Mom always had money for you and never for me?””
Madison lowered her head.
“I did wonder.””
That answer hurt more than a denial.
My father gathered the documents into a folder.
“Both of you need to understand something. This house will not be run on secrets anymore.””
He looked at Madison.
“And if your mother took money without permission, we will deal with it properly. You are not responsible for her choices, but you are responsible for telling the truth about yours.””
Madison nodded through her tears.
Later that night, my father sat beside me on the edge of my bed. He placed an old photograph on my nightstand.
It showed my biological mother holding me as a baby.
“Your mother started that education fund when you were born,” he said.
“She wanted you to have the freedom to choose your own future.””
I traced the edge of the photograph.
“Will I still be able to go to college?””
My father took my hand.
“I will do everything I can to protect that future.””
Then his expression changed.
“There is something else I found while reviewing the account.””
He opened the folder and showed me a document I hadn't seen before.
It was a record of a second transfer, made several months earlier.
The amount was smaller, but the recipient was the same.
Madison.
And beneath the transaction details was a note attached by the bank.
*Recurring transfer authorization submitted by Vanessa Carter.*
My father stared at the page.
“This wasn't a single mistake, Lily.””
My heart sank.
“No,” I whispered.
“It wasn't.””
He closed the folder.
“And tomorrow, we're going to find out how long it's been happening.””
May you like
But neither of us knew that Vanessa had already made a phone call of her own.
And the person she called was about to make our situation much worse.
