Chapter 8: The Night Catherine Died

Daniel read the words again.

*SHE KNOWS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.*

Maria Alvarez's name appeared directly above them.

For the first time, Daniel wondered whether the woman who had worked in his home for seven years had been hiding something about Catherine's death.

The thought made him sick.

He called Maria immediately.

"Maria, I need to ask you something difficult.""

"Is Sofia safe?""

"Yes. Officers are with her now.""

"Then ask.""

Daniel looked at the photograph of Vanessa's handwritten list.

"Did you know anything unusual about the night Catherine died?""

The silence on the other end lasted so long that he checked whether the call had disconnected.

Finally, Maria whispered, "I was afraid you would ask me that one day.""

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?""

"I didn't cause what happened to Catherine. But there was something I never told you.""

"Why?""

"Because I promised Catherine I wouldn't speak about it unless Ethan was in danger.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Ethan is in danger now.""

"I know.""

He heard Maria take a shaky breath.

"Can you come to my apartment?"" she asked.

"I'll tell you everything, but not over the phone.""

Daniel agreed.

An hour later, he arrived at Maria's apartment with Marcus and a detective. Sofia was safe at a relative's house, and two officers remained outside the building.

Maria opened the door.

She looked exhausted. Her eyes were swollen from crying, and she held a faded envelope against her chest.

"Come in, Mr. Whitmore.""

Daniel entered the small living room.

He noticed the family photographs on the walls, the stack of nursing textbooks on the table, and the old photograph of Catherine and Maria beside the rose garden.

He had never visited Maria's home before.

He had employed her for seven years without once asking where she lived or what her life looked like outside his mansion.

The realization stung.

Maria sat down and placed the envelope on the table.

"Before I tell you what happened, I need you to understand something. Catherine was my friend. She trusted me with something because she was frightened.""

Daniel sat opposite her.

"Frightened of Vanessa?""

Maria shook her head.

"Not at first.""

She opened the envelope and removed a folded sheet of paper.

"This is a copy of a note Catherine gave me two days before she died.""

Daniel unfolded it.

Maria, if anything happens to me, please make sure Daniel checks the blue folder in the nursery cabinet. I found something that doesn't make sense, and I don't want him worrying until I know the truth.

The note was signed with Catherine's initials.

Daniel stared at it.

"The nursery cabinet?""

Maria nodded.

"She asked me to keep the note somewhere safe. She said she would retrieve it herself once she had spoken to Richard.""

"Richard knew?""

"I don't know how much he knew. Catherine told me she was meeting him to discuss some financial documents.""

Daniel looked up sharply.

"When?""

"The afternoon before she died.""

He stood and began pacing.

"Why didn't you tell me this when she died?""

Maria's eyes filled with tears.

"Because you were devastated. You could barely speak. You spent days sitting beside her things, and every time someone mentioned the hospital, you looked like you were going to collapse.""

Daniel stopped.

Maria continued.

"Catherine made me promise not to tell you until she understood what was happening. I thought she meant I should wait a few days. Then she died, and I couldn't bring myself to break that promise.""

"What happened on the night she died?""

Maria folded her hands.

"I was working late. Catherine had asked me to bring tea to the nursery because she wanted to sort some of Ethan's things. She was pregnant then, and she had been having trouble sleeping.""

Daniel remembered that night.

He had been in Dallas for a business meeting, expecting to return the following morning. Catherine had called him before dinner, sounding tired but cheerful.

She had told him she missed him.

He had promised to be home early.

Instead, he had received the hospital's call just after midnight.

Maria's voice pulled him back.

"When I entered the nursery, Catherine was standing beside the cabinet. She looked frightened.""

"What did she say?""

"She asked whether anyone had been in the room.""

Daniel frowned.

"Had someone?""

"I told her I hadn't seen anyone. But she showed me that the blue folder was missing.""

Daniel felt a chill.

"What was in it?""

"Bank statements, copies of the trust documents, and some letters. She said someone had taken them.""

"Did she accuse Vanessa?""

"No. She said she wasn't sure who had access to the cabinet.""

Maria paused.

"Then she asked me to do something unusual.""

"What?""

"She wanted me to check the front hallway camera and see who had entered the nursery corridor that evening.""

Daniel turned toward Marcus.

"Do we still have those recordings?""

Marcus shook his head slowly.

"The original system was replaced two months after Catherine died. Older recordings were supposed to be archived, but we haven't found them yet.""

Maria reached into the envelope and removed another piece of paper.

"This is why I kept the note.""

It was a handwritten list of times.

6:42 p.m.

7:18 p.m.

8:03 p.m.

Next to the final time, Catherine had written a name.

*Richard.*

Daniel stared at it.

"What does this mean?""

Maria looked down.

"Richard came to the house that evening. I saw him leave the study shortly after eight.""

"Did you see Catherine?""

"Yes. She was upset. They argued in the hallway.""

"What did you hear?""

Maria closed her eyes, remembering.

Richard had been standing near the nursery door, speaking in a low voice.

"You don't understand the consequences," he had said.

Catherine's reply had been quiet but firm.

"I understand perfectly. You have been moving money without authorization.""

Richard had glanced toward the staircase.

"Keep your voice down.""

"No. You don't get to tell me what to do with my family's money.""

Maria had approached from the kitchen, carrying a tray.

Both of them had stopped speaking.

Richard had straightened his jacket and smiled as though nothing had happened.

"Good evening, Maria.""

"Good evening, Mr. Hale.""

He had walked away.

Catherine had stood in the hallway with one hand pressed against her stomach.

Maria had set down the tray.

"Mrs. Whitmore, are you all right?""

Catherine had shaken her head.

"I don't know anymore.""

Maria swallowed.

"Did you tell Daniel?""

"Not yet. I need proof.""

Then Catherine had looked directly at her.

"Maria, if I can't fix this myself, I need you to remember what you saw tonight.""

Maria had nodded.

She had never imagined those words would become a burden she carried for nearly a year.

Daniel sat down heavily.

"Did you tell the police any of this?""

"I told them Richard had visited the house. They said there was no evidence connecting him to what happened.""

"Why didn't you tell them about the missing folder?""

Maria's eyes filled again.

"I did. But they were focused on the medical emergency. Catherine's death was ruled a pregnancy-related complication. I had no proof that the missing documents mattered.""

Daniel pressed his fingers against his temples.

Catherine had discovered financial misconduct.

She had confronted Richard.

Someone had taken the documents.

And now Vanessa was attempting to gain control of Ethan's trust using a forged application.

The pattern was becoming impossible to ignore.

"Maria," he said carefully, "did you ever find the blue folder?""

She hesitated.

Then she reached into the envelope again.

"I found something else a week after Catherine died.""

She placed a small brass key on the table.

"I was cleaning the nursery when I noticed a loose panel beneath the cabinet. This key was hidden behind it.""

Daniel picked it up.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I didn't know what it opened. I was afraid that if I gave it to someone, whatever Catherine had hidden would disappear.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"Did you try it on any of the locks?""

Maria nodded.

"Only one. The old cabinet in the nursery. It wouldn't turn.""

Daniel examined the key.

A tiny number had been engraved near its base.

*417.*

Marcus took a photograph and sent it to the estate's security technician.

A few moments later, his phone rang.

He listened, then looked up.

"Mr. Whitmore, the key number matches an old document safe that was removed from the nursery during the renovation.""

Daniel stood.

"Where is it now?""

"The storage building behind the east garage.""

They returned to the estate that afternoon under police supervision.

The storage building smelled of dust, cardboard, and old paint. Daniel moved past boxes of decorations and unused furniture until Marcus found the document safe beneath a canvas cover.

The key turned.

Inside lay a blue folder.

Daniel opened it with shaking hands.

The first pages contained financial statements and copies of the trust agreements.

Then he found a handwritten letter from Catherine.

Daniel,

I have confirmed that money has been moved without my authorization. Richard claims the transfers were approved by you, but I know you never signed those instructions.

Vanessa has also been asking questions about Ethan's future inheritance. I fear she is being influenced by someone who understands our financial arrangements.

I have arranged for Eleanor Brooks to preserve the original documents. If I cannot speak to you before the baby arrives, please trust her independent review.

There is one more thing.

The person who removed the blue folder from the nursery has access to the house, the security system, and our financial records.

I believe that person has been helping Richard.

The letter ended there.

Daniel turned the page.

A second sheet had been tucked behind it.

It was a printed email dated the day Catherine died.

The sender was Richard Hale.

The recipient was Vanessa.

The subject line read:

*WE NEED TO TALK BEFORE SHE SPEAKS TO DANIEL.*

Daniel stared at the screen printout.

He read the message once.

Then again.

Richard had written that Catherine had discovered the transfers and was preparing to challenge them. He had urged Vanessa to meet him at the estate that evening.

The final sentence was underlined in Catherine's handwriting.

*If they come back tonight, do not let them into the nursery.*

Daniel felt sick.

"She knew they were coming," he whispered.

Marcus examined the document.

"Sir, there's something missing.""

Daniel looked up.

"What?""

"The email references an attachment. It says the sender included a revised guardianship agreement.""

Daniel's heart began pounding.

"Where is it?""

Marcus searched the folder.

Nothing.

The attachment was missing.

Then Daniel noticed a final note written along the bottom edge of the printed email.

*Ask Richard why he changed the time of my appointment.*

Daniel froze.

"What appointment?""

Maria shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Before Daniel could ask another question, his phone rang.

The caller was the detective investigating the attempted trust transfer.

"Mr. Whitmore, we have a problem.""

Daniel stepped outside.

"What happened?""

"We've just received a report that Richard Hale has left his office. His staff says he took several boxes of files with him.""

"Where is he going?""

"We don't know. But there's something else.""

Daniel gripped the phone.

"What?""

"The hospital has located a medical record related to Catherine's final night. It contains a discrepancy in the timeline.""

Daniel's mouth went dry.

"What kind of discrepancy?""

The detective paused.

"The ambulance was dispatched forty-three minutes later than the time originally recorded in the hospital report.""

Daniel stared at the mansion.

Forty-three minutes.

Forty-three minutes in which Catherine had needed help.

May you like

Forty-three minutes nobody had ever explained.

And if the delay had been deliberate, then the secret hidden in the blue folder was only the beginning.
