Chapter 3: The Missing Twelve Minutes
For several seconds, Maria couldn't breathe.
Vanessa had not only pushed Ethan into the pool. She had also tried to erase the evidence.
"Can Daniel see this?"" Maria asked.
Marcus nodded.
"The original footage is stored on the local security server. The deletion request failed because the system automatically backed up the recording.""
"Then take it to him.""
"I will. But there's a problem.""
Maria stared at him.
"What problem?""
Marcus lowered his voice.
"Someone accessed the server remotely before I arrived. They tried to delete more than just the pool recording.""
"What else?""
"Several files from the previous week.""
Maria felt a chill move through her.
"Why would Vanessa want to delete recordings from last week?""
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
"I don't know. But someone clearly doesn't want Mr. Whitmore seeing them.""
Before Maria could ask another question, the back door opened.
Vanessa stood in the doorway wearing a fresh white blouse. Her hair had been brushed, her makeup repaired, and the expression on her face was once again composed.
She looked at Marcus's tablet.
"What are you two doing?""
Marcus straightened.
"Checking the security system, ma'am.""
Vanessa descended the steps.
"Give me that.""
Marcus held the tablet closer to his chest.
"Mr. Whitmore asked me to retrieve the footage.""
"And I'm telling you to give it to me.""
"I'm sorry, ma'am. I can't.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"Do you know who you're speaking to?""
"Yes, ma'am.""
"Then perhaps you should remember that your paycheck comes from this family.""
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"So does Mrs. Alvarez's, or at least it did until you accused her of hurting a baby.""
Vanessa's expression turned vicious.
"Careful, Marcus. You have a wife and two children, don't you?""
He went still.
Maria stepped between them.
"Don't threaten him.""
Vanessa slowly turned her head.
"Excuse me?""
"You heard me. If you have nothing to hide, let him show Daniel the footage.""
Vanessa laughed softly.
"You really think you're going to win this?""
"I'm not trying to win anything. I'm trying to protect Ethan.""
For a moment, the backyard fell silent except for the distant hum of the pool pump.
Then Vanessa smiled.
"How touching.""
She turned toward Marcus.
"Fine. Show Daniel whatever you want. But don't be surprised when he realizes that the camera footage doesn't tell the whole story.""
She walked away before either of them could respond.
Maria watched her disappear inside.
"What did she mean?"" she asked.
Marcus looked down at the tablet.
"I'm afraid we're about to find out.""
An hour later, Daniel returned from the hospital.
Ethan was safe. The doctors had examined him, monitored his breathing, and found no immediate signs of serious injury. They had instructed Daniel to watch him closely over the next twenty-four hours.
But the incident had shaken him badly.
When he entered the mansion, he carried Ethan against his shoulder, one hand protectively covering the back of the baby's head.
Vanessa rushed toward him.
"Daniel! How is he?""
"He's stable.""
She pressed a hand to her chest.
"Thank God. I've been terrified.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Have you?""
Her expression faltered.
"What does that mean?""
"Marcus told me about the footage.""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Oh.""
"Did you push the stroller into the pool?""
She stared at him as if he had spoken another language.
"Daniel, how can you ask me that?""
"Answer the question.""
"No! Of course I didn't!""
Daniel shifted Ethan into the crook of his arm.
"Then why did you try to delete the recording?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't know what I was doing. I panicked!""
"You told me the camera wasn't working.""
"I thought it wasn't!""
"You told me Maria pushed the stroller.""
Vanessa looked down.
"Daniel, please. You have to understand. Everything happened so fast.""
He stared at her.
"Did you lie to me?""
She began to cry.
"I was scared!""
"Of what?""
Vanessa's shoulders trembled.
"I thought you would blame me because I was watching Ethan.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"So you decided to blame Maria instead?""
"I didn't mean for it to go this far.""
He looked toward the hallway.
"Where is she?""
"Who?""
"Maria.""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"You fired her, remember?""
Daniel's expression changed.
He had forgotten.
For a moment, he stood in the center of the foyer, holding his son while the weight of what he had done settled over him.
He had dismissed the woman who had saved Ethan's life without even watching the footage.
"Get Marcus," he said.
Vanessa hesitated.
"Daniel—"
"Now.""
She hurried away.
Daniel lowered himself onto a nearby sofa and gently adjusted Ethan's blanket.
"I'm sorry, buddy," he whispered.
The baby blinked sleepily.
Daniel brushed a finger over his son's cheek.
"I'm going to fix this.""
But when Marcus arrived with the tablet, Daniel discovered that the footage raised more questions than it answered.
The recording showed Vanessa pushing the stroller into the pool. It showed Maria diving in and pulling Ethan to safety. It showed Vanessa pointing at Maria and screaming accusations.
Everything Maria had said was true.
Daniel watched the recording twice.
Then he closed his eyes.
"Get Maria on the phone," he said.
Marcus nodded.
"Yes, sir.""
"And contact our attorney. I want the deletion attempt documented.""
"Understood.""
Marcus turned to leave.
"Wait," Daniel added.
"You said someone accessed the server remotely?""
"Yes, sir. The system logged a connection from outside the property.""
"Can you identify it?""
"Not yet. I'm checking the access records.""
Daniel looked at the screen again.
"Do it.""
Marcus left.
Daniel sat in silence with his son.
He could still hear Maria's voice from the backyard.
I saved his life. Why won't anyone believe me?
He had spent years telling himself that family was the one thing he could always trust. After Catherine died, he had clung to Vanessa because she was one of the few people left who knew what it meant to lose someone close.
But grief had made him careless.
He had mistaken familiarity for honesty.
And Maria had paid the price.
When Marcus returned twenty minutes later, he carried a printed report.
"Mr. Whitmore, I found something.""
Daniel stood.
"What?""
"The deletion request came from Vanessa's personal account. But the remote connection that accessed the server originated from a device registered to your office.""
Daniel frowned.
"My office?""
"Yes, sir.""
"Who has access?""
"You, Ms. Vanessa, and your executive assistant. The device ID is registered to your assistant's laptop.""
Daniel stared at the report.
"That doesn't make sense. My assistant is in Dallas.""
Marcus nodded.
"That's what I thought. But there's another detail.""
He placed a second page on the table.
"The laptop connected to the server at 12:14 p.m. The same minute the deletion request was submitted.""
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"Who was using it?""
"We're checking the login records.""
Daniel picked up the page.
Then he noticed a handwritten note at the bottom.
*ACCESS GRANTED BY ADMINISTRATOR.*
His name was listed beneath it.
Daniel looked up sharply.
"I never authorized this.""
Marcus hesitated.
"Sir, the authorization was entered three days ago.""
"By whom?""
Marcus took a breath.
"The system says it was approved through your account.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Someone has my credentials.""
He glanced toward the staircase, where Vanessa had disappeared.
"Bring her back here.""
Marcus left immediately.
Daniel called his attorney and instructed him to preserve every security record. Then he called Maria himself.
The phone rang four times before she answered.
"Hello?""
"Maria. It's Daniel.""
Silence.
"Maria, I've seen the footage.""
Another pause.
"I know what happened now.""
Her voice was quiet.
"Do you?""
The question hurt more than he expected.
"Yes. You saved Ethan, and I accused you of doing the opposite. I'm sorry.""
Maria took a shaky breath.
"Your apology doesn't undo what you did to me, sir.""
"I know.""
"You didn't even look at the camera before you fired me.""
Daniel lowered his head.
"You're right.""
"I've worked for your family for seven years. I held your son when he cried. I stayed with him when you couldn't sleep because you were afraid something would happen to him.""
"I know, Maria.""
"No, sir. You knew my job. You didn't know me.""
Daniel had no answer.
After a long silence, he said, "I'd like you to come back so we can talk. Not as an employee. Just so I can apologize properly.""
"I need time.""
"Of course.""
"And I want the truth about why Vanessa did this.""
"So do I.""
Maria ended the call.
Daniel stared at his phone.
He had hoped she might forgive him immediately, but he understood why she couldn't.
Then he heard footsteps on the staircase.
Vanessa entered the foyer, holding a small handbag.
"Daniel, I need to go out for a while.""
He looked at her.
"Where?""
"To see a friend.""
"Sit down.""
Her fingers tightened around the handbag.
"Why?""
"Because we're going to discuss the security footage.""
Vanessa forced a laugh.
"I already explained what happened.""
"No. You explained why you lied. You haven't explained why you tried to erase the evidence.""
She set her handbag on the console table.
"I panicked, Daniel. How many times do I have to say it?""
"And why did someone use my office credentials to access the server three days ago?""
Vanessa went completely still.
Daniel watched her face.
"You know something about this.""
"No, I don't.""
"Then why are you shaking?""
"I'm not!""
Her voice rose so sharply that Ethan stirred in Daniel's arms.
Daniel immediately looked down and rocked his son gently.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"Daniel, please. I'm your family.""
He met her eyes.
"And Maria isn't?""
Vanessa looked away.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she picked up her handbag.
"I can't do this right now.""
She headed toward the front door.
Daniel didn't stop her.
Instead, he watched her leave, his mind racing through everything that had happened.
The attempted deletion.
The stolen credentials.
The missing files from the previous week.
There was something larger beneath the accusation, something Vanessa had been desperate to hide.
And Daniel was beginning to suspect that the baby in the pool had never been the only secret inside his house.
At that moment, Marcus rushed back into the foyer.
"Mr. Whitmore!""
Daniel turned.
"What is it?""
Marcus held up his tablet.
"I recovered one of the deleted files from last week.""
Daniel's face tightened.
"What does it show?""
Marcus glanced toward the front door Vanessa had just closed.
"It's footage from your private study.""
"Show me.""
Marcus pressed play.
The video showed Vanessa entering the study after midnight. She walked directly to Daniel's desk, opened a locked drawer with a key she took from her necklace, and removed a thick manila envelope.
She placed it inside her handbag.
Then she turned toward the camera.
For a moment, she simply stared into the lens.
And smiled.
Daniel felt a chill crawl up his spine.
"What was in that envelope?"" he asked.
Marcus shook his head.
"We don't know. But the camera recorded something else.""
He paused the video and zoomed in on Vanessa's hand.
A document had slipped halfway out of the envelope.
The text was blurry, but one line was still readable.
*WHITMORE FAMILY TRUST — BENEFICIARY AMENDMENT.*
Daniel stared at the screen.
His late wife had created the trust to protect Ethan's future. Only Daniel and the family's attorney were supposed to have access to its documents.
He turned to Marcus.
"Call the attorney. Tell him to freeze every pending change to the trust.""
Marcus nodded and hurried away.
Daniel looked toward the front door.
Vanessa had tried to drown his son, frame the woman who saved him, and erase the security footage.
But the stolen document suggested she had been planning something long before that afternoon.
And if she had already changed the family trust, the truth might be far more dangerous than he imagined.
Then Daniel's phone buzzed.
An unknown number had sent him a single message.
*If you want to know why Vanessa targeted Ethan, ask what happened to Catherine's original will.*
May you like
A second message appeared before he could respond.
*And don't trust your attorney.*
