Chapter 9: The Last Time They Called Her Powerless

Monday arrived with clear skies and an unusually cold wind.

The courthouse was crowded when I arrived.

Several journalists stood near the entrance. A few photographers waited beside the steps.

I had expected attention.

I hadn't expected this much.

The Ashford divorce had become a business story, a family drama, and a public argument about who had actually built the company.

Eleanor met me near the entrance.

"Ready?""

I adjusted my coat.

"Yes.""

"Remember, don't respond to anything outside the courtroom. Let the documents speak.""

"I know.""

Across the lobby, Julian arrived with his attorney.

He wore a dark navy suit and the expensive watch I had given him for our ninth anniversary.

His hair was perfectly styled.

His expression was different.

He looked tired.

Vivian walked beside him, carrying a leather folder.

Lila wasn't there.

When Julian saw me, he approached.

"Claire.""

I stopped.

"Good morning.""

He glanced at Eleanor.

"Can we speak privately?""

"No.""

His jaw tightened.

"Just five minutes.""

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Any communication regarding the proceedings should go through counsel.""

Julian ignored her.

"I've been trying to reach you.""

"I received your email.""

"And?""

"I forwarded it to my attorney.""

He stared at me.

"That's all?""

"That's all.""

Vivian approached.

"Claire, this is ridiculous. You don't need lawyers standing between you.""

Eleanor smiled politely.

"Actually, that's precisely why we're here.""

Vivian ignored her.

"Julian has suffered enough.""

I looked at her.

"Then he should stop creating problems.""

Her expression hardened.

"You have no heart.""

I didn't answer.

The courtroom doors opened.

"Everyone, please take your seats.""

We entered.

Julian sat beside his attorney.

Vivian took a seat behind him.

I sat beside Eleanor.

The judge reviewed the settlement documents first.

The lake condo would transfer to Julian.

The marital investment account would be divided according to the agreed percentages.

Each party would retain their personal retirement accounts and individually owned assets.

The corporate shares inherited by me were expressly excluded from the marital estate.

The judge looked over the ownership documentation.

"Mrs. Ashford, you understand that the seventy-two percent shareholding interest remains your separate property under the terms presented?""

"Yes, Your Honor.""

"Mr. Ashford, do you understand that the settlement does not grant you any ownership interest in Ashford Medical?""

Julian shifted in his chair.

"Yes.""

The judge looked at him.

"Do you agree?""

His attorney whispered something.

Julian swallowed.

"Yes, Your Honor.""

The judge continued reviewing the documents.

Then she reached the property sale.

"Mrs. Ashford, Bennett Holdings was the legal owner of the residence throughout the marriage?""

"Yes.""

"And you were the controlling owner of Bennett Holdings?""

"Yes.""

"Was Mr. Ashford ever listed as an owner of the property?""

"No.""

"Was the property transferred into the marital estate?""

"No.""

The judge nodded.

"Very well.""

Vivian shifted behind Julian.

I could hear her whispering to his attorney.

Then the judge addressed the financial claims.

"Mr. Ashford, you have raised concerns about the value of your contributions to the company.""

"Yes, Your Honor.""

"Your attorney has submitted a memorandum suggesting that your executive leadership substantially increased the company's value.""

Julian straightened.

"That's correct.""

The judge examined another document.

"However, the shareholder records, financial restructuring documents, and board minutes identify Mrs. Ashford as the majority shareholder and principal architect of several significant financial transactions.""

Julian's face tightened.

The judge continued.

"Furthermore, the company has submitted an independent governance review identifying certain transactions requiring additional investigation.""

Julian's attorney stood.

"Your Honor, my client disputes any implication of wrongdoing.""

The judge raised her hand.

"This court is not making a finding of wrongdoing in the divorce proceeding. That matter is being handled separately. However, these records do not support the claim that Mr. Ashford personally owns the company.""

Julian looked down.

For the first time, I saw the public version of him disappear.

No confident smile.

No polished speech.

Just a man sitting in a courtroom, realizing that the documents mattered more than his reputation.

The judge returned to the settlement.

After reviewing the final terms, she signed the order.

Our marriage was legally dissolved.

Nine years.

One signature.

That was all.

Eleanor squeezed my hand.

"Congratulations, Claire.""

I nodded.

"Thank you.""

I didn't feel victorious.

I felt relieved.

The hearing was over.

I collected my handbag and stood.

Julian remained seated for a moment.

Then he approached me near the courtroom doors.

"Claire.""

I turned.

"What?""

He looked at the floor.

"Is this really what you wanted?""

I considered the question.

"No. I wanted a marriage that didn't require me to protect myself from my own husband.""

He swallowed.

"I didn't think you'd go this far.""

"That's because you never thought I'd leave.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Can we at least end this without hating each other?""

I looked at him.

"I don't hate you, Julian.""

He seemed surprised.

"I don't?""

"No. I just don't trust you. And I no longer have any reason to keep pretending.""

He looked away.

Then Vivian appeared.

Her expression was furious.

"Julian, we're leaving.""

She turned toward me.

"Don't think this is over.""

I said nothing.

Vivian stepped closer.

"Listen carefully, Claire. You have your little settlement, but you are no longer part of this family. I don't want to see you at our house, near our friends, or anywhere around the Ashfords again.""

I almost smiled.

"Our house?""

Vivian lifted her chin.

"Yes. The house. Don't ever come back.""

Several people in the corridor turned to look.

She didn't care.

"After everything my son gave you, you should be ashamed to show your face here.""

Julian stood behind her, silent.

I looked at Vivian.

Then I looked at Julian.

And finally, I said the words I had been waiting to say.

"Actually, Vivian, I already sold that house.""

Her mouth opened.

I continued.

"And I just fired your son as CEO.""

The silence was extraordinary.

Vivian blinked.

Julian's face went completely white.

I smiled politely.

"Have a wonderful afternoon.""

I turned and walked toward the exit.

Behind me, Vivian finally found her voice.

"What did you say?""

I kept walking.

Julian hurried after me.

"Claire! Wait!""

I stopped near the courthouse doors.

He looked genuinely panicked.

"You can't keep saying you fired me. The board removed me.""

"That's correct.""

"Then why are you saying it like you personally did it?""

I looked at him.

"Because I own seventy-two percent of the company, Julian. The board made the decision. I had the votes to protect it.""

He stared.

"You're making me look like a criminal.""

"No. The audit is examining the transactions. That's a separate matter.""

Vivian came rushing toward us.

"You've ruined my son's reputation!""

I took a breath.

"No, Vivian. His reputation was built on a story that wasn't true. I simply stopped repeating it.""

Julian looked around.

Several reporters were watching.

He lowered his voice.

"Please. We need to settle this privately.""

"There's nothing left to settle.""

"Claire, what am I supposed to tell people?""

I studied him.

"Tell them the truth.""

Then I walked outside.

Eleanor followed.

The cold air hit my face.

For the first time in nine years, I didn't have to think about whether Julian would be upset when I got home.

There was no home to return to with him.

No shared bedroom.

No carefully rehearsed explanations.

No family dinners where Vivian treated me like an unpaid assistant.

I had lost a marriage.

But I had kept my father's company.

And more importantly, I had kept myself.

My phone rang as I reached the car.

Daniel.

"Claire, congratulations.""

"Thank you.""

"The board has prepared a statement confirming the transition and reaffirming your position as majority shareholder.""

"Good.""

"Richard wants to speak with you about the expansion plans.""

"Tell him I'll be at headquarters tomorrow.""

Daniel chuckled.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

"Julian has just requested a meeting with the board.""

I stopped beside the driver's door.

"For what?""

"He wants to negotiate a consulting position.""

I almost laughed.

"Consulting?""

"Apparently, he believes he can still contribute.""

I looked back at the courthouse.

Through the glass entrance, I could see Vivian arguing with Julian.

The woman who had once told me I was fortunate to marry her son was now watching him struggle to understand how quickly his world had changed.

"Daniel?""

"Yes?""

"Tell him the board will review any formal proposal.""

"Will do.""

I ended the call and opened the car door.

Then another message arrived.

This time, it was from Eleanor.

Claire, I just received an update from the audit team. They've found something in Julian's final executive expense approvals that we need to discuss immediately.

I frowned.

I had thought the worst was behind us.

Apparently, it wasn't.

I opened the attached document.

At the bottom was a payment authorization bearing Julian's electronic signature.

The amount was $1.2 million.

The recipient was a company I had never heard of.

And the payment description read:

*Acquisition Deposit — Ashford Medical Competitor.*

I stared at the screen.

Julian hadn't simply planned to leave the company.

He had apparently been preparing to help someone else acquire it.

And the name of the company receiving the money was one I recognized.

It belonged to the same investment group that had approached my father years earlier, when Ashford Medical was on the verge of bankruptcy.

The group that had tried to buy our company for almost nothing.

I immediately called Eleanor.

"Tell me you have the full transaction file.""

"We do.""

"Who authorized the payment?""

"Julian.""

"Who received it?""

Eleanor paused.

Then she said:

"Claire, there's a second signature on the agreement.""

"Whose?""

She took a breath.

"Vivian Ashford.""

I gripped the steering wheel.

My former mother-in-law hadn't merely underestimated me.

She might have been helping her son sell the company my father had spent his life building.

And now I finally understood why they had been so desperate to take my shares.

May you like

They hadn't just wanted my money.

They had wanted control of the entire empire.
