Chapter 6: The Man Who Tried to Take Back an Empire

By Monday morning, Julian had made his next mistake.

He had sent an email to several major Ashford Medical investors claiming that the company's board had unlawfully removed him as CEO.

He described the decision as a personal attack orchestrated by his estranged wife.

He also claimed that the company was facing a leadership crisis and that he remained the only person capable of protecting its future.

Unfortunately for him, Daniel Mercer had forwarded the message to me before breakfast.

I read it twice.

Then I called him.

"How many investors received this?""

"Seven directly. We believe he has contacted several others privately.""

"Has anyone responded?""

"Two requested clarification. One wants an emergency conference call.""

"Arrange it.""

Daniel hesitated.

"Claire, there's another problem. Julian has been telling employees that the board's decision will be reversed.""

I looked at the clock.

8:12 a.m.

"Then we should make the decision clear.""

Within an hour, Daniel had arranged an internal announcement.

At 9:30, the executive team gathered in the main conference room.

I stood beside the new CEO, Richard Hale, a former manufacturing executive with twenty-two years of experience in the medical equipment industry.

He was fifty-six, calm, and almost aggressively practical.

He had spent the previous week reviewing Ashford Medical's operational structure.

He wasn't interested in magazine covers.

He wanted production schedules, supplier performance, and reliable delivery dates.

Exactly what the company needed.

"Good morning, everyone," Daniel began.

"As many of you know, the board has approved a leadership transition. Richard Hale will assume the position of chief executive officer, effective immediately.""

A few people exchanged glances.

Someone raised a hand.

"What happens to Mr. Ashford?""

Richard answered.

"Julian's appointment has ended. We will respect the terms of his employment agreement and ensure an orderly transition.""

Another employee spoke.

"Is the company in financial trouble?""

I stepped forward.

"No.""

The room became quiet.

"Ashford Medical remains financially stable. Our hospital contracts are secure, our production facilities are operating normally, and our expansion plans remain in place.""

A woman from the finance department raised her hand.

"Will there be layoffs?""

"Not as a result of this transition," I replied.

"Our priority is protecting the people who have kept this company running.""

Daniel nodded.

"Claire will continue serving as majority shareholder and board director.""

I saw several employees exchange surprised looks.

Some had known about my ownership for years.

Others had believed the same story Julian had repeated publicly.

A young operations manager approached me after the meeting.

"Mrs. Ashford?""

"Yes?""

"I wanted to thank you.""

"For what?""

"My father worked here for twenty-three years. He always said your father built something special.""

I smiled.

"He did.""

The young man looked toward the executive offices.

"People are worried about what happens next.""

I nodded.

"I understand. But we're not going anywhere.""

At 11:15, Richard and I met with the company's largest institutional investor.

The call lasted forty minutes.

They asked about the board vote, the leadership transition, and Julian's claims.

I answered every question with documents.

At the end, their representative said something that made Daniel smile.

"We've reviewed the governance structure. We support the board's decision and expect the company to remain focused on operations.""

The first challenge was over.

But Julian wasn't finished.

At 1:20 p.m., Eleanor called.

"Claire, we received the injunction filing.""

I closed my office door.

"What exactly is he asking for?""

"He's seeking temporary relief to prevent the company from implementing the CEO transition. He's also alleging that your divorce has compromised your ability to exercise shareholder rights.""

I leaned against the desk.

"Does he have evidence?""

"Not enough to support the relief he's requesting. But he's clearly trying to create uncertainty.""

"Can we oppose it?""

"Absolutely. Daniel has already provided the board minutes, voting records, and governance documents.""

"Then proceed.""

Eleanor hesitated.

"Claire, I need to tell you something else. His attorney has requested copies of certain financial records from Bennett Holdings.""

"Which records?""

"The property sale and the transactions connected to the holding company.""

I looked at the wall.

"He's trying to challenge the house sale?""

"Possibly. But the property was separately owned, and the transaction appears properly documented. We'll respond through counsel.""

I nodded.

"Thank you.""

After the call, I opened the original property file.

Every document was there.

The original purchase agreement.

The transfer into Bennett Holdings.

The corporate ownership records.

The independent valuation.

The buyer's offer.

The final closing statement.

Julian had spent years believing that asking questions was unnecessary because he already knew the answers.

Now he was discovering how expensive that habit could become.

That afternoon, Vivian called.

I almost didn't answer.

But curiosity won.

"Hello, Vivian.""

Her voice was sharp.

"What have you done with the money?""

I blinked.

"Good afternoon.""

"Don't play innocent. Julian says you sold the house for millions.""

"The sale proceeds belong to Bennett Holdings.""

"That's family money!""

"No, Vivian. It isn't.""

"You lived in that house with my son.""

"Living somewhere doesn't transfer ownership.""

She made an angry noise.

"Julian says you're hiding assets.""

"Julian should discuss that with his attorney.""

"You can't keep everything.""

"I haven't.""

"He's entitled to half!""

"Of the marital assets that are legally subject to division. Not my inherited shares. Not property owned by a separate holding company.""

Vivian went silent.

Then she said, "You think you're clever.""

"No. I think I read the documents.""

"Julian will fight you.""

"He's welcome to.""

She lowered her voice.

"You're going to regret treating us this way.""

I looked through my office window.

Employees were walking between the production buildings, carrying folders and speaking into their phones.

The company was functioning.

Orders were being processed.

Hospitals were receiving equipment.

Everything that mattered was continuing.

"Vivian, I spent nine years trying to earn your respect. I'm not spending another minute worrying about whether you approve of my decisions.""

I ended the call.

At 4:40 p.m., Richard entered my office.

"Claire, we have a situation.""

I looked up.

"What happened?""

"Julian came to the building.""

"Did security let him in?""

"He still has an employee badge. It hasn't been deactivated.""

I stood.

"Where is he?""

"Outside the executive office.""

I walked down the corridor.

Julian was standing near the reception desk, arguing with a security supervisor.

"Move," he ordered.

"I need access to my office.""

The supervisor remained calm.

"Mr. Ashford, your access authorization has been withdrawn.""

"I am the CEO.""

Richard stepped forward.

"Not anymore.""

Julian turned.

His eyes landed on me.

"There she is.""

I stopped several feet away.

"What do you need, Julian?""

"My office.""

"Your personal belongings will be packed and delivered.""

"I have confidential files in there.""

"Company records remain company property.""

He laughed bitterly.

"You're enjoying this.""

"No.""

"Don't lie. You wanted to humiliate me in front of everyone.""

I glanced at the employees watching from nearby desks.

"You're doing that yourself.""

He stepped closer.

"You have no idea what you've started.""

Richard moved between us.

"Mr. Ashford, this conversation is over.""

Julian pointed at him.

"You should be careful. You don't know what you're walking into.""

Richard didn't move.

"I know exactly what I'm walking into. I've spent twenty-two years running manufacturing operations. I don't need a title to know what my responsibilities are.""

Julian looked back at me.

"You replaced me with him?""

"I appointed a CEO who can do the job.""

His face tightened.

"I made this company famous.""

"You made yourself famous using its name.""

He stared at me.

Then his voice became quieter.

"Claire, please. We can work this out.""

I studied him.

For the first time, he didn't look angry.

He looked frightened.

"Work what out?""

"The company. The divorce. Everything.""

"You wanted everything.""

"I was angry.""

"You wanted half of a business you never owned.""

"I didn't understand the shares.""

"You never asked.""

He swallowed.

"Can we talk privately?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

He glanced at the security supervisor.

Then he looked at Richard.

Finally, he turned and walked toward the elevators.

But just before the doors closed, he looked back.

"You're going to need me, Claire.""

I watched the elevator disappear.

Richard exhaled.

"Does he always behave like that?""

"Only when things don't go his way.""

Richard gave a small smile.

"Then I suspect we'll see him again.""

He was right.

At 7:08 p.m., Eleanor sent me a message.

The court has scheduled an expedited hearing regarding Julian's injunction request. His attorney has also submitted a new filing.

I called her immediately.

"What new filing?""

"He's requesting an accounting of the marital finances and alleging that the sale of the estate was designed to deprive him of property rights.""

I sighed.

"Does he actually believe that?""

"His attorney certainly wants the court to examine it.""

"What happens next?""

"We respond with the ownership records and the closing documents. But there's something more concerning.""

"What?""

Eleanor lowered her voice.

"Julian has listed Vivian as a potential witness.""

I frowned.

"His mother?""

"Yes. Apparently, she intends to testify that the estate was presented to the family as an Ashford residence throughout the marriage.""

I almost laughed.

"She can testify to what she believed. It doesn't change the deed.""

"Exactly. But I want you prepared for her to say anything necessary to support her son's position.""

I looked at the framed photograph of my father on my desk.

He was standing outside the original factory, one hand resting on the shoulder of a young employee.

He looked tired but happy.

I remembered his words.

The most dangerous person in a room is the one who knows where every document is kept.

"Let her testify," I said.

Eleanor paused.

"You're sure?""

"Absolutely.""

After hanging up, I opened the drawer containing my father's original files.

At the bottom was a small envelope I hadn't touched in years.

Written across the front in his handwriting were four words:

For Claire. When necessary.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

And beneath the letter was a document that made me sit completely still.

It was an agreement dated six months before my father's death.

An agreement involving the original shares, the company's voting structure, and one additional provision Julian had never known existed.

I read the final paragraph.

Then I picked up my phone and called Eleanor.

"There's something you need to see.""

"What is it?""

I looked at the signature at the bottom of the page.

"My father left another layer of protection.""

A long silence followed.

Then Eleanor asked:

"Claire, does Julian know about this?""

I looked at the document again.

"No.""

"Does anyone else?""

I shook my head, even though she couldn't see me.

"Not anymore.""

Because my father hadn't simply left me seventy-two percent of Ashford Medical.

May you like

He had made sure that no one could ever take the company away from me through marriage, divorce, or manipulation.

And the final clause was about to turn Julian's entire legal strategy upside down.
