Chapter 3: What the Camera Saw
I replayed the footage three times.
On the first viewing, I noticed Vanessa placing the object beneath the hallway console.
On the second, I saw her check the camera.
On the third, I realized she wasn't checking whether it was recording.
She was checking whether it could see her face.
The object was a small black device, no larger than a car key. She positioned it behind a decorative vase, then adjusted the vase until the device was hidden from anyone walking through the hallway.
I paused the recording.
My mouth had gone dry.
"What are you doing, Vanessa?"" I whispered.
The security room door opened behind me.
Daniel entered.
"Have you found anything?""
I moved aside.
"Watch.""
The footage showed Vanessa entering Arthur's study at 8:11. She carried a folder and a glass of water.
At 8:14, she left without the folder.
At 8:16, she returned.
Then, at 8:17, the camera captured her stepping into the hallway and looking directly into the lens.
She smiled.
She tapped her phone.
And she screamed.
The sound came through the security system's microphone, distorted but unmistakable.
"GET AWAY FROM ME!""
Daniel jerked backward.
"Oh, my God.""
"Keep watching.""
The camera captured Arthur appearing in the doorway, confused and unsteady. Vanessa grabbed his wrist, pulled him toward her, and shoved herself against the wall.
Then she struck her own cheek.
Not once.
Twice.
Daniel covered his mouth.
"No.""
The recording continued.
Vanessa threw herself to the floor, tore the shoulder seam of her blouse, and began sobbing.
Arthur stood over her, bewildered.
He never touched her.
Not once.
Daniel stumbled toward a chair and sat down.
"My sister did this?""
I rewound the footage and played the sequence again.
He stared at the screen as though repetition might change what it showed.
"She told me he attacked her.""
"She lied.""
Daniel's eyes shone.
"I told him to leave his own room. I told him he needed an evaluation.""
His voice broke on the last word.
I placed a hand on his shoulder.
"We can fix this. We have the footage.""
But when I tried to export the recording, a warning appeared.
*FILE ACCESS DENIED. ADMINISTRATOR AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.*
I frowned.
"That's strange.""
"What?""
"The system normally lets me export clips.""
I opened the administrator panel.
The account permissions had changed overnight.
My access was restricted to live viewing only.
Daniel leaned over my shoulder.
"Who changed it?""
I checked the security log.
At 11:42 p.m. the previous night, someone had logged in remotely using the administrator credentials.
The account name was listed as:
*A. BENNETT.*
Arthur.
My father-in-law had supposedly changed the permissions himself.
"Maybe Dad did it," Daniel said, though he didn't sound convinced.
"Why would he lock himself out of his own evidence?""
I opened the remote-access history.
The login had originated from a device registered to the estate's management office.
Vanessa's office.
Daniel stood abruptly.
"I'm calling her.""
"Don't.""
"Claire, she has to explain this.""
"Not until we have a copy of the recording.""
I tried the system's backup drive.
The screen displayed a list of saved clips. Most were intact, but the footage from the previous night had been deleted.
Not corrupted.
Deleted.
I felt a cold pressure gathering beneath my ribs.
"Daniel, someone has been cleaning the system.""
He stared at the monitor.
"Can you recover it?""
"I'm going to try.""
I opened the maintenance console and initiated a recovery scan. The progress bar crawled across the screen.
Then the hallway feed flickered.
A notification appeared.
*REMOTE SESSION DETECTED.*
Someone was accessing the system while we watched.
Daniel whispered, "Is that normal?""
"No.""
The screen went black.
For two seconds, there was nothing.
Then a message appeared in white letters.
*STOP LOOKING.*
Daniel stumbled away from the desk.
"What the hell is that?""
I grabbed my phone and photographed the screen.
The message vanished.
The system rebooted.
When the cameras came back online, the hallway was empty.
I could hear my heartbeat in my ears.
"Someone knows we're here," I said.
Daniel looked at the door.
"We need to get Dad out of this house.""
A heavy knock interrupted him.
Arthur entered, carrying an old leather document case.
His face changed when he saw the black screen.
"Did you watch the recording?""
Daniel rushed toward him.
"Dad, I'm sorry.""
Arthur stopped.
"For what?""
"For believing her.""
His father studied him.
Then he placed a hand on Daniel's shoulder.
"You're my son. I know you want to believe the best of your sister.""
"She made me think you were dangerous.""
"She needed you to think that.""
Arthur opened the document case and removed a sealed envelope.
"Your mother knew Vanessa could become dangerous when money was involved. She made me promise to protect certain things after she died.""
"What things?"" I asked.
"Her estate. Her shares in Bennett Holdings. And a trust she created for the grandchildren she hoped we would have.""
Daniel frowned.
"But Mom died before we had children.""
"That was why the trust was never distributed. The terms were specific. The family had to remain free of coercion, and the trustees had to agree that the beneficiaries were acting in good faith.""
I looked at the envelope.
"And Vanessa wants control of it.""
Arthur nodded.
"She believes that if I'm declared mentally incapable, she can force a review of the trust and replace the trustees.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't have proof that she was willing to go this far.""
He glanced at the security monitor.
"Now I do.""
I showed him the administrator log and the threatening message.
Arthur's face went pale.
"She has access to the system.""
"Or someone does," I replied.
Arthur closed the document case.
"Then we leave. All three of us.""
Daniel nodded immediately.
"I'll get the car.""
"No," Arthur said.
"Not yet.""
He moved to the window overlooking the driveway.
A black SUV sat beyond the iron gates.
Its engine was running.
A second vehicle pulled in behind it.
Daniel stepped beside his father.
"Are those Vanessa's?""
Arthur shook his head.
"I've never seen them before.""
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
I opened the message.
*You have ten minutes to leave the security room. Then you will understand why the footage was never meant to save Arthur.*
Another message appeared before I could respond.
This one contained a photograph.
It showed the three of us standing in the security room.
Taken from inside the house.
Taken moments earlier.
I looked at the ceiling camera.
Its red indicator light had gone dark.
Daniel backed away from the window.
"Dad, we need to call the police.""
Arthur reached for his phone.
Before he could unlock it, every light in the room went out.
The emergency lighting failed.
Somewhere above us, a door slammed.
Then came the sound of heavy footsteps descending the stairs.
Slow.
Deliberate.
One step at a time.
Daniel grabbed my hand in the darkness.
"Who's there?""
Nobody answered.
A thin beam of light appeared beneath the security room door.
Someone stood outside.
Then a familiar voice spoke through the wood.
"Daniel? Open the door. It's me.""
Vanessa.
Her voice sounded perfectly calm.
Almost affectionate.
"I know you've seen the recording," she continued.
"And I know Dad has told you some stories.""
Arthur moved in front of us.
"Don't open it.""
Vanessa gave a soft laugh.
"Oh, Daddy. You always did think you were the smartest person in the room.""
A metallic click came from the other side of the door.
She continued speaking.
"Daniel, if you want your wife to survive tonight, you need to listen very carefully.""
My husband went rigid.
"Leave Claire out of this!""
"I would love to. But she made a very unfortunate decision when she watched that footage.""
The doorknob turned.
Once.
Twice.
Then Vanessa whispered the words that made my blood run cold.
"The camera was never supposed to catch me attacking Dad. It was supposed to catch Dad attacking someone else.""
Arthur's hand closed around my wrist.
In the darkness, he whispered, "Now you know why your mother-in-law hid the original recording.""
I stared at him.
"What original recording?""
The lock began to turn.
Arthur leaned close enough for me to feel his breath against my ear.
"Claire, whatever happens next, do not let Vanessa get that envelope.""
The door swung inward.
And in the light from the hallway, I saw Vanessa standing beside two men in dark suits.
One held a set of handcuffs.
The other held a photograph of me.
Vanessa looked straight at Daniel.
"Choose," she said.
"Your father, or your wife.""
Then she raised her phone.
May you like
On its screen was a countdown.
*09:59.*
