Chapter 2: The Accusation
"GET HIM AWAY FROM ME!""
Vanessa's scream shattered the silence of the Bennett mansion.
I dropped a ceramic mug in the kitchen. It struck the tile and broke into white fragments, hot coffee spreading across the floor.
Daniel came running from his home office.
"What happened?""
Vanessa stood in the hallway, clutching her cheek. Her blouse was torn at the shoulder, and tears streamed down her face.
Arthur stood opposite her, his back against the wall.
"I didn't touch you," he said.
His voice was so quiet that Daniel barely seemed to hear him.
Vanessa rushed toward her brother.
"He grabbed me! I came to talk to him about the estate, and he suddenly went crazy!""
Daniel caught her by the shoulders.
"Slow down. Are you hurt?""
"Look at my face!""
She turned her cheek toward him.
There was a red mark just below her eye.
Daniel's expression changed.
He looked at his father.
"Dad?""
Arthur stared at the mark.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
"You did that yourself.""
Vanessa recoiled as though he had struck her again.
"How can you say that?"" she cried.
"Daniel, did you hear him? He's threatening me!""
"I'm not threatening anyone," Arthur replied.
"You came into my study demanding that I sign those papers. I refused. You knocked over the lamp, and when I tried to leave, you blocked the door.""
"You're lying!""
"I asked you to move.""
"You grabbed me!""
"I never laid a hand on you.""
Vanessa buried her face against Daniel's chest.
"I knew this would happen. I told you he wasn't himself anymore. I told you we couldn't leave him alone!""
Daniel wrapped an arm around her.
"All right. You're safe.""
I watched Arthur's shoulders sink.
That was the worst part.
He didn't look angry.
He looked as though his own son had just closed a door in his face.
I stepped between them.
"Daniel, we need to hear both sides.""
He turned sharply.
"Claire, not now.""
"When, then? Before or after everyone decides Arthur is guilty?""
Vanessa lifted her head.
"How dare you?""
"How dare I ask what happened?""
She pointed at her cheek.
"Are you blind?""
"No. But I know that Arthur can barely open a pickle jar without complaining about his arthritis. You expect me to believe he suddenly attacked you?""
Arthur closed his eyes.
"Claire, please.""
His voice carried something I couldn't immediately identify.
Fear.
Not of Vanessa's accusation.
Of what might happen next.
Vanessa heard it, too.
She straightened, wiping her tears with the back of her hand.
"Daniel, I'm calling the police.""
"You don't have to do that," Daniel said.
"Of course I do! What if he does this to a nurse? What if he attacks one of the staff? What if next time it's you?""
Arthur's face went pale.
"Vanessa, stop.""
She took a deliberate step backward.
"Don't come near me!""
He hadn't moved.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Dad, I think you should go upstairs.""
Arthur stared at him.
"You're asking me to leave?""
"Just until everyone calms down.""
"This is my house.""
"I know, but—"
"My house, Daniel. I built this place with your mother. I paid for your education. I worked until my hands could barely hold a pen to give you both a life I never had.""
His voice cracked.
"And you won't even look me in the eye.""
Daniel's gaze dropped to the floor.
For a moment, I thought he might apologize.
Instead, he said, "Please, Dad. Don't make this harder.""
Arthur looked at his son for a long time.
Then he turned and walked toward the staircase.
His right hand gripped the railing. His left trembled at his side.
Vanessa watched him go.
As soon as his back was turned, she leaned close to Daniel and whispered something I couldn't hear.
Daniel's face tightened.
"What?"" he asked.
Vanessa whispered again.
He looked toward the stairs, then back at her.
"No. We aren't doing that.""
Her expression hardened.
"Then don't complain when something worse happens.""
I heard every word.
Daniel noticed me watching.
"What did she say?"" I asked.
"Nothing.""
"Daniel—"
"Claire, please.""
He guided Vanessa into the living room and closed the doors behind them.
I stood alone in the hallway, staring at the broken mug still lying in the kitchen.
Then I remembered Arthur's warning.
Never believe the first person who screams.
I went upstairs.
Arthur was sitting on the edge of his bed, holding a handkerchief against his mouth. His glasses lay beside him, one lens cracked.
"Are you bleeding?"" I asked.
He shook his head.
"Just a cut. I caught my lip when I fell against the desk.""
I knelt in front of him.
"Tell me exactly what happened.""
He stared at the carpet.
"She wanted me to sign a power of attorney. She said it would make managing the estate easier.""
"And you refused?""
"Margaret made arrangements before she died. Vanessa knows that. She believes if she can get control of the accounts, she can challenge those arrangements.""
"What arrangements?""
Arthur reached for the drawer beside his bed.
His fingers hesitated on the handle.
"Not yet. I need to be certain.""
"Certain of what?""
"That the person I trust won't betray me.""
The words stung, although I knew they weren't intended to.
"You can trust me.""
Arthur studied my face.
Then he nodded toward the door.
"Tell me something, Claire. Is the hallway camera still working?""
"Yes.""
"Did you see what happened?""
"I was in the kitchen when I heard the scream. But the camera should have recorded the hallway.""
For the first time that morning, something resembling relief crossed his face.
"Good.""
I reached for my phone.
"Then we'll watch it.""
Arthur caught my wrist.
"Not yet.""
"Why?""
"Because if Vanessa learns we've seen it, she'll know her story has failed.""
He released me and looked toward the window.
"She isn't acting alone.""
A chill traveled down my spine.
"Who else is involved?""
Before he could answer, someone knocked on the bedroom door.
Daniel entered without waiting.
"Claire, Vanessa wants everyone downstairs.""
Arthur stood slowly.
"Tell your sister I won't sign anything.""
Daniel looked exhausted.
"She's not asking you to sign anything now.""
"Then what does she want?""
Daniel hesitated.
"She's contacted a lawyer. She says she's afraid to stay in the same house with you.""
Arthur's mouth tightened.
"And what do you say?""
Daniel looked at his father, then at me.
"I think Dad needs an evaluation. Just to establish whether he's capable of making decisions.""
Arthur went completely still.
I could hear the rain ticking against the window.
"An evaluation?"" he repeated.
"It's a precaution.""
"Whose precaution?""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"Please don't make me choose between you.""
Arthur gave a small, broken laugh.
"You made that choice when you believed her before asking me what happened.""
Daniel flinched.
For a moment, his eyes filled with tears.
Then his phone buzzed.
He looked down at the screen.
Whatever he read drained the color from his face.
"What is it?"" I asked.
He turned the phone toward me.
It was a message from Vanessa.
*If Dad refuses to cooperate, we proceed with Plan B. The doctor is already paid.*
Beneath the message was another notification.
A bank transfer confirmation.
The recipient's name was partially visible.
*Meridian Private Security.*
I looked up.
"Daniel, why is your sister paying a security company?""
He snatched the phone back.
"I don't know.""
Arthur moved toward him.
"Let me see that.""
Daniel stepped away.
"Dad, I said I don't know.""
But his hands were shaking.
And suddenly, I understood why Arthur had been so afraid.
This wasn't merely about an accusation.
Vanessa was preparing to have an elderly man declared incapable of managing his own affairs.
If she succeeded, she could take control of the estate, isolate him from anyone who questioned her, and make his denials sound like the confused ramblings of a sick old man.
Unless we could prove she was lying.
I turned toward the bedroom door.
"We need that footage now.""
Daniel didn't answer.
Arthur did.
"Get it, Claire.""
I went downstairs to the security room, a narrow office behind the garage where the camera system's recorder was stored.
My hands were damp as I logged in.
The hallway feed appeared on the monitor.
I dragged the timeline back to 8:00 a.m.
At 8:11, Vanessa entered Arthur's study.
At 8:14, she emerged alone.
At 8:16, she returned, carrying a folder.
Then the screen showed something that made me stop breathing.
Vanessa glanced toward the camera.
She reached into her pocket, took out a small object, and carefully placed it beneath the hallway console.
A few seconds later, she walked toward Arthur's study door.
But before entering, she turned to the camera one last time.
She smiled.
Then she pressed a button on her phone.
The timestamp read 8:17.
May you like
And I finally understood that Vanessa hadn't forgotten the camera at all.
She had a reason for wanting us to watch.
