Chapter 7: The Wife Who Knew My Real Name
Vanessa was sitting in an interrogation room when I arrived at the police station.
Her cream-colored blouse had been replaced with a gray sweatshirt. Her hair hung loosely around her face, and a small cut marked her lower lip. A paper cup of untouched coffee sat in front of her.
She looked smaller than I remembered.
But when she saw me through the glass, she smiled.
Not warmly.
Triumphantly.
Detective Miller stopped beside me.
“You are not required to speak with her,” he said.
“She's a suspect in an ongoing investigation, and anything she tells you could be an attempt to manipulate you.””
“I understand.””
“Then why are you going in?””
“Because she knows something about my family that my father has spent twenty years hiding.””
Miller handed me a small recording device.
“Keep it on the table. Don't promise her anything. If she threatens you or tries to arrange a private meeting, tell me immediately.””
I entered the room.
Vanessa watched me sit down, her hands folded neatly in front of her.
“You came,” she said.
“You said you could tell me where Michael is.””
“I can.””
“Then tell me.””
She tilted her head.
“Is that all I get after everything we've been through?””
I stared at her.
“You accused my father of attacking you. You stole his documents. You helped someone forge my signature, and you left me to burn in a basement.””
Her smile faded.
“I didn't know the basement would catch fire.””
“You knew we were trapped.””
She looked down at her hands.
For a moment, she appeared ashamed.
Then she lifted her eyes.
“Daniel, I need you to understand something. I didn't marry you because of your father's money.””
“That's a strange thing to say to someone you tried to frame.””
“I married you because Michael told me who you were.””
My mouth went dry.
“Who am I?””
She leaned forward.
“Your father has spent your entire life telling you that Michael was his son from another relationship. That's true. But he never told you why Michael disappeared, why your mother was so frightened of him, or why your birth certificate was amended when you were seven.””
I felt my pulse hammering in my neck.
“My birth certificate was never amended.””
“That's what Robert told you.””
She reached into her pocket, then remembered where she was and pulled her hand back.
“The document is in Michael's possession. He showed it to me six months ago. Your original surname wasn't Carter.””
I stared at her.
“What was it?””
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“Reed.””
The name meant nothing to me.
Then she said, “Your biological father was Michael's first wife's brother.””
I sat motionless.
“My father is Robert Carter.””
“Robert raised you. He loved you. But he wasn't the man who fathered you.””
“That is impossible.””
“Your mother was pregnant when Michael's first wife disappeared. The family concealed the truth because the circumstances surrounding her death were too dangerous.””
I stood so abruptly that the chair scraped across the floor.
“You're lying.””
Vanessa didn't flinch.
“Then ask Robert why he kept a second birth certificate in the concealed room. Ask him why your mother left a letter warning him never to let Michael meet you alone.””
I remembered the letter Arthur had shown me.
My mother had written that Michael believed I knew something about the original company records.
Nothing about my biological father.
I sat down again.
“What does Michael want from me?””
“Something your mother took from him.””
“The ledger?””
Vanessa nodded.
“It's not just a record of stolen money. It contains the original ownership structure of several companies, along with the names of people who helped Michael hide his assets. If the ledger becomes public, people with enough money and influence to make problems disappear will go to prison.””
“And my identity has something to do with it?””
“Your biological father's family owned a controlling share in one of those companies. Your mother discovered that Michael had forged documents to transfer that share to himself. She hid the evidence, and Robert changed your identity to protect you.””
I stared at her.
“Why would you help him?””
She looked away.
“Because Michael promised me a life without financial worries. He said we would take the estate legally, then disappear before anyone could connect us to the fraud.””
“You knew about the plan to frame my father.””
“Yes.””
The admission came without tears or hesitation.
My hands curled into fists beneath the table.
“Why?””
“Because Robert refused to sign the transfer documents. Michael said that if we could make him appear violent and mentally unstable, we could challenge his decisions and gain control of the estate.””
“And the assault?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I staged it.””
The room seemed to lose all sound.
She continued, speaking quickly now.
“I scratched my arm before I went downstairs. I poured water near the study so the floor would be slippery. I knew Robert would come down when he heard me moving around. When he reached for the folder, I screamed.””
“You deliberately made him look guilty.””
“Yes.””
“And you were willing to send him to prison for something he never did.””
Her eyes shone, but I no longer recognized the woman sitting across from me.
“I thought we would be finished before the case went to trial.””
I leaned closer.
“Who is Michael?””
She shook her head.
“You know his name.””
“His real name.””
For the first time, she looked afraid.
“Michael Carter is the name he uses now. His original name was Michael Reed.””
My stomach tightened.
Reed.
The surname Vanessa had just claimed belonged to me.
Before I could ask another question, Detective Miller entered the room.
“That's enough for now.””
Vanessa immediately stood.
“No! He needs to know the rest.””
Miller pointed toward the chair.
“Sit down.””
She obeyed, but her eyes remained fixed on me.
“Daniel, the man who raised you isn't the only one who has lied to you. Your mother lied, too. She knew what happened to Michael's first wife.””
“Where is she buried?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then she looked at the observation window.
Her face drained of color.
Someone was standing behind the glass.
A man in a dark suit.
He lifted one hand and pressed a finger against his lips.
Vanessa recoiled.
“No,” she whispered.
Miller turned toward the window.
The man was already gone.
An officer rushed into the room.
“Detective, we've got a problem. The suspect's transport vehicle has been compromised.””
Miller reached for his radio.
“What do you mean, compromised?””
“The driver is unconscious. The vehicle is empty.””
Vanessa began shaking.
I stared at her.
“Who was that man?””
She gripped the edge of the table.
“Michael.””
The radio crackled again.
A second officer's voice came through, urgent and breathless.
“Detective, we've recovered a body from the warehouse property. Male, approximately forty-five to fifty years old. There's identification on him.””
Miller listened.
Then his eyes moved toward me.
“The identification belongs to Michael Carter.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She covered her mouth.
“That isn't possible,” she whispered.
“He was just here.””
I turned toward the window.
The man who had been standing behind the glass was gone, and a terrible possibility settled over me.
May you like
If the body belonged to Michael, who had just walked into the police station?
And why had he looked so much like my father?
