Chapter 2: The Man in Handcuffs
The police separated us within minutes.
One officer took Vanessa into the living room while another escorted my father toward the front door.
“Sir, I need you to turn around and place your hands behind your back.””
My father looked at me.
“Daniel, please tell them I would never hurt her.””
I stepped forward.
“My father is seventy years old. He's never been violent in his life.””
The officer tightened his grip on Dad's wrist.
“Sir, we have a report of an assault. We'll establish what happened at the station.””
Vanessa sat on the couch with a blanket around her shoulders, although the house was warm. She had stopped crying long enough to answer the officer's questions.
Then she saw Dad being led outside.
She began sobbing again.
“Please don't let him come back,” she whispered.
My father stopped at the doorway.
He looked over his shoulder at her.
“I changed your car battery last winter,” he said quietly.
“I fixed your mother's necklace when the clasp broke. I even drove you to the hospital when you had that infection.””
Vanessa stared at him without responding.
“I never asked you for anything,” Dad continued.
“Not once.””
“Sir,” the officer interrupted, “keep moving.””
Dad turned toward me.
“Remember what I told you about the house.””
Then the door closed behind him.
I stood in the entryway, listening to the rain hammer the porch roof.
My father had been taken away in handcuffs.
And my wife was sitting in our living room, telling strangers he had attacked her.
I wanted to believe there had been a misunderstanding.
I wanted to believe that grief, exhaustion, or some terrible accident had turned an ordinary night into a nightmare.
But when I returned to the living room, Vanessa said something that made my skin crawl.
“Daniel, we need to change the locks tomorrow.””
I stared at her.
“My father hasn't even been charged with anything yet.””
“Do you want me to live in fear?””
“No. I want to understand what happened.””
She rose from the couch and grabbed my hands.
“Then believe me.””
Her fingernails pressed into my palms.
“Your father has been acting strangely for weeks. He watches me. He questions me. Tonight, he followed me into the study and grabbed me when I told him to leave.””
I pulled my hands away.
“What were you doing in the study?””
She blinked.
“What?””
“Dad said he found you there. What were you doing?””
Her mouth tightened.
“I was looking for a document.””
“What document?””
“Something that belonged to your mother.””
I waited.
She looked away.
“I'm exhausted, Daniel. I can't do this right now.””
She walked upstairs, leaving me alone beneath the chandelier.
At 4:40 a.m., I drove to the police station.
A detective named Miller met me in a small interview room. He was in his fifties, with tired eyes and a coffee stain on his sleeve.
“Your father has no prior record,” he said, flipping through a folder.
“But your wife has provided a detailed statement.””
“What exactly is she accusing him of?””
Detective Miller studied me.
“She says he entered her room, grabbed her, and attempted to assault her. She claims she escaped when he lost his balance.””
I leaned forward.
“That's impossible. My father can barely climb the stairs without stopping to catch his breath.””
“Age doesn't automatically rule out an assault.””
“I know that. But there has to be more to this.””
The detective closed the folder.
“Mr. Carter, is there anything that might help establish what happened?””
I thought of the study.
Then I remembered the small black camera mounted above the hallway entrance.
My mother had installed it years earlier after a package disappeared from the front porch. We had kept it because Dad worried about break-ins.
It recorded the hallway, the staircase, and the entrance to the study.
“There's a security camera in the hallway,” I said.
Detective Miller sat straighter.
“Does it record continuously?””
“Yes.””
“Does it have audio?””
“I think so.””
He reached for his phone.
“Then we'd better preserve that footage before anyone deletes it.””
I felt a flicker of hope.
If the camera showed what Dad had described, we could clear his name.
But when I returned home, I discovered that Vanessa had already thought of the camera.
She was standing on a chair beneath it, reaching toward the small black device with a screwdriver.
“What are you doing?”” I shouted.
She nearly fell.
“Daniel! You scared me.””
I crossed the room.
“Why are you taking down the camera?””
“It's invasive. I don't want footage of me walking around my own house.””
“You knew it was there when we moved Dad in.””
“I didn't think it was recording inside the house!””
“You just told me you didn't want footage of yourself. Why?””
She stepped down from the chair, holding the screwdriver behind her back.
“Because I'm the victim here, Daniel. Do you understand how humiliating this is?””
I stared at her.
“If you're telling the truth, the footage will prove it.””
Her face hardened.
“Or it will show a frightened woman running away from an old man while he attacks her outside the frame.””
“Then let's look at it.””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
She seemed to realize it.
“I mean, not now. I can't watch it. I can't relive what happened.””
I reached for the camera's power cable.
“I'm calling the detective.””
Vanessa grabbed my wrist.
“Don't you dare.””
We stood facing each other beneath the camera.
Her fingers dug into my skin.
Then she released me and stepped backward.
“Fine,” she said.
“Watch it. Destroy our marriage if that's what you want.””
She walked upstairs and slammed the bedroom door.
I waited until I heard the shower running before opening the security system on my laptop.
The footage from the previous night was still there.
I dragged the timeline back to 1:47 a.m.
At first, the hallway was empty.
Then my father appeared at the top of the staircase, moving slowly in his slippers. He paused near the study door, rubbed his chest, and looked toward the kitchen.
At 2:09 a.m., Vanessa emerged from our bedroom.
She wasn't crying.
She wasn't frightened.
She was carrying a small leather folder.
She glanced toward the staircase, then entered the study.
I leaned closer to the screen.
Five minutes later, she came out holding a metal object I recognized immediately.
The key to Dad's locked document cabinet.
She returned to the study.
At 2:31 a.m., she appeared again, carrying several sheets of paper. She placed them inside the leather folder and slipped the key into her pocket.
Then she did something that made me stop breathing.
She looked directly at the hallway camera.
She smiled.
Not a nervous smile.
Not a smile of relief.
A small, deliberate smile, as though she had just finished the first step of a plan.
I watched the next twenty minutes.
At 2:47 a.m., Vanessa returned to the hallway carrying a glass of water.
She poured some onto the floor near the study door.
Then she walked back upstairs.
I rewound the footage and watched it again.
Water on the floor.
A locked cabinet opened.
Documents removed.
My wife had been inside the study before Dad arrived.
I checked the timestamps.
At 3:02 a.m., my father appeared at the bottom of the stairs, carrying a flashlight. He looked toward the study and then toward the kitchen.
Vanessa emerged from the bedroom seconds later.
The camera had no view inside the study, but it captured their shadows moving across the wall.
Then came the crash.
Then the scream.
I watched Vanessa rush into view, clutching her arm.
Dad stood several feet away, holding nothing.
She pointed at him.
He shook his head.
And then she looked up at the camera again.
This time, she didn't smile.
She simply raised her hand and pointed toward my father's face.
As though she were reminding someone exactly whom she wanted blamed.
My hands went cold.
I exported the footage to a flash drive and called Detective Miller.
“Detective, I found something.””
“Does it show the alleged assault?””
“It shows my wife entering the study, removing documents, and pouring water on the floor before the incident. It also shows my father arriving afterward.””
There was a long silence.
“Don't confront her,” he said.
“Don't alter the original recording. Send me a copy, and preserve the system.””
“I need to know what she was looking for.””
“That's our next question.””
Before I could answer, I heard a sound behind me.
A soft click.
I turned.
Vanessa stood at the top of the stairs, holding my phone.
Her face was pale.
“Who did you call?”” she asked.
I closed the laptop.
“No one.””
She slowly descended the stairs.
“You're lying.””
I stood up.
“Vanessa, what did you take from Dad's study?””
Her eyes flicked toward the laptop.
Then toward the hallway camera.
For the first time since the police had arrived, she looked genuinely afraid.
“You watched it,” she whispered.
I took a step toward her.
“What did you do?””
She backed away, gripping my phone so tightly that her knuckles turned white.
Then she said six words that changed everything.
“You have no idea who's coming.””
Before I could ask what she meant, the doorbell rang.
A man stood on our porch, soaked from the rain, holding a thick envelope.
He introduced himself as a lawyer representing my father's estate.
Then he looked past me, directly at Vanessa.
“Mrs. Carter,” he said, “we need to discuss the missing original will.””
Vanessa dropped my phone.
And from somewhere upstairs, a second device began ringing.
It was coming from the room where she kept her locked desk.

The lawyer's face changed when he heard it.
“Mr. Carter,” he whispered, “whatever you do, don't let your wife answer that call.””
