Chapter 8: The Secret My Father-in-Law Took to His Grave

Marcus drove to Chloe's apartment that afternoon.
She lived in a modest building on the other side of town.
When he arrived, she was waiting near the entrance with a large brown envelope.
“Mr. Hale?””
“Please, call me Marcus.””
Chloe looked nervous.
“I'm sorry this is happening.””
Marcus glanced at the envelope.
“You said you had original documents.””
She nodded.
“But before I show you, I need you to understand something. I didn't know what Vanessa was doing at first.””
“Then tell me when you found out.””
Chloe unlocked her apartment.
They sat at a small dining table.
She opened the envelope and removed several printed emails, invoices, and company registration forms.
Marcus immediately recognized the name Grace Development Holdings.
Chloe pointed to an email dated nearly two years earlier.
“This was the first time Vanessa contacted me about the company.””
Marcus read it.
*Subject: Private Investment Opportunity*
The message explained that Gloria had been introduced to a property investor through an old family acquaintance.
The proposed investment involved purchasing distressed properties, renovating them, and selling them for a profit.
Marcus frowned.
“Who was the acquaintance?””
Chloe slid another page toward him.
The name was written at the bottom.
*Franklin Hale.*
Marcus stared.
Franklin was Vanessa's late father.
“What?””
Chloe nodded.
“He introduced Gloria to Richard Collins before he died.””
Marcus leaned back.
“Richard knew Vanessa's father?””
“They were friends. At least, that's what Vanessa told me.””
“Why would my father-in-law introduce Richard to Gloria?””
Chloe hesitated.
“Because they had already worked together on a business deal.””
Marcus stared at the documents.
“Which business deal?””
Chloe opened another folder.
“This one.””
It contained old invoices and property records from a company called Franklin Property Consultants.
Marcus recognized the address of one property.
It was a warehouse he had purchased through his construction company several years earlier.
He looked up.
“What does this have to do with me?””
Chloe took a breath.
“Your company bought that warehouse for $180,000. But the original purchase agreement listed a different seller.””
Marcus examined the document.
The original seller was Franklin Property Consultants.
He frowned.
“My company purchased it through a commercial broker.””
“Yes. But Franklin's company had a financial interest in the sale.””
Marcus looked at the date.
The transaction had happened six months before he married Vanessa.
He remembered the purchase.
The warehouse had been a good deal, and Richard had strongly recommended it.
He had never questioned the paperwork.
“Are you saying Richard and Franklin were working together to sell me property?””
Chloe nodded.
“I believe so.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“Why didn't you tell anyone?””
“Because I didn't know the entire story. Vanessa only showed me pieces. I thought it was ordinary business.””
Chloe removed another email.
“This was sent shortly before Franklin died.””
Marcus began reading.
The message was addressed to Richard.
It discussed an outstanding financial obligation and a plan to recover money through a family property transaction.
At the bottom was one sentence:
*"Once Marcus marries Vanessa, we will have access to the resources needed to complete the arrangement.""*
Marcus felt sick.
He read it again.
Once Marcus marries Vanessa.
He looked at Chloe.
“Was my marriage part of a business arrangement?””
“I don't know.””
“Did Vanessa know?””
Chloe lowered her eyes.
“She once told me that her father believed you were the perfect husband because you were hardworking, trusting, and financially stable.””
Marcus stared at the table.
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
He remembered Franklin at their engagement dinner.
The older man had toasted him.
"Marcus, you're a good young man. I hope you and Vanessa build something wonderful together.""
Had those words been sincere?
Or had he been congratulating himself on a plan that was already in motion?
Chloe interrupted his thoughts.
“There is another document.””
She pulled out a photocopy of an old handwritten letter.
It was addressed to Gloria.
Marcus recognized the handwriting from the birthday cards Franklin had once sent.
He read the letter carefully.
Franklin mentioned a financial obligation to Richard.
He also referred to a property transfer that needed to be completed before a certain date.
But the final paragraph was particularly disturbing.
*"If anything happens to me, make sure Vanessa continues with the arrangement. Marcus must never know about the original agreement.""*
Marcus placed the letter down.
“Why did you keep these?””
Chloe swallowed.
“Because Vanessa asked me to destroy them.””
“And you didn't?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Chloe looked directly at him.
“Because I watched your mother come into the office one afternoon. She was carrying a small lunch bag for Vanessa. She had brought food because Vanessa told her you were too busy to eat properly.””
Marcus listened.
“She thanked me for looking after her daughter. She even gave me a little knitted scarf she had made. I couldn't understand how someone who treated your mother so cruelly could come from a family that had once been helped by her kindness.””
Marcus looked down.
Chloe continued.
“I also have recordings.””
Marcus looked up sharply.
“Of what?””
“Meetings between Vanessa, Gloria, and Richard. I recorded them after I realized they were asking me to prepare false documents.””
She took out a small USB drive.
Marcus stared at it.
“What's on it?””
“The real plan.””
That evening, Marcus took the USB drive to James Carter's office.
They listened to the recordings together.
The first contained a conversation between Vanessa and Gloria.
*Gloria:* “Your father worked too hard to leave everything unfinished.””
*Vanessa:* “I know, Mom.””
*Gloria:* “Marcus has the money. Richard has the company contacts. We only need the property.””
*Vanessa:* “What if he refuses?””
*Gloria:* “Then make him believe it's his idea.””
The second recording was more revealing.
Richard's voice was unmistakable.
*Richard:* “Franklin never completed the arrangement. I'm not going to spend the rest of my life waiting for money that was promised years ago.””
*Vanessa:* “Then help me get control of Marcus's company.””
*Richard:* “And what do I get?””
*Vanessa:* “Ten percent of the warehouse development. Plus your original investment.””
Marcus paused the recording.
James looked at him.
“Do you know what they're referring to?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
James opened the warehouse purchase documents.
“Then we need to find the original agreement.””
Marcus examined the file again.
There was a missing attachment.
A reference to an agreement signed by Franklin, Richard, and a third person.
The third person's name had been blacked out on the copy.
James leaned forward.
“Marcus, do you know who had access to your father's old legal papers?””
“My mother.””
“Anyone else?””
Marcus thought.
Then he remembered something.
His father had kept a small metal lockbox in the attic.
After his death, Evelyn had taken it to a storage unit.
Marcus had forgotten about it.
He called his mother.
“Mom, do you still have Dad's old lockbox?””
“Yes, sweetheart. It's in the storage unit.””
“Has anyone asked you for it?””
There was a pause.
Then Evelyn answered quietly.
“Vanessa asked me about it last month.””
Marcus stood.
“What did she want?””
“She said she was looking for your father's old insurance papers.””
“Did you let her take anything?””
“No. I told her I would ask you first.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Mom, please don't go anywhere alone. I'll come get you.””
But Evelyn's voice suddenly changed.
“Marcus?””
“Yes?””
“There's something I haven't told you.””
He froze.
“What is it?””
“Your father left a letter with the lockbox. He told me to open it only if someone ever tried to take the house or the family property.””
Marcus felt his heart pound.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I thought it was just an old family letter. But after what happened yesterday, I opened it.””
“What did it say?””
Evelyn began crying.
“It mentioned Vanessa's father.””
Marcus gripped the phone.
“What did Dad know about him?””
His mother took a shaky breath.
“He wrote that Franklin Hale had once tried to take our family home through a fraudulent property agreement.””
Marcus stood completely still.
James looked up.
Evelyn continued.
“Your father said he had stopped him. But he warned me that if the same people ever returned, I should never sign anything without speaking to you.””
Marcus looked at James.
The old letter might finally explain everything.
But then Evelyn said something else.
“Marcus, there's a photograph inside the box too.””
“What photograph?””
“Your father standing beside Franklin and Richard.””
She paused.
“And there's another person in it.””
Marcus frowned.
“Who?””
Evelyn whispered:
“Your older brother.””
Marcus felt the floor disappear beneath him.
He had no older brother.
At least, that was what he had always believed.
His mother continued.
“Your father told me never to speak about him. He said he had left the family years before you were born.””
Marcus looked at James.
Neither man spoke.
Then Evelyn delivered the revelation that changed everything.
“Sweetheart, the man Vanessa's father was working with wasn't just Richard Collins.””
May you like
She swallowed.
“He was your father's first son.””
