Chapter 4: The Stranger Who Knew Everything

Marcus read the message three times.

“Meet me tomorrow. Come alone.””

He stared at the unknown number, then glanced toward the staircase where Vanessa had disappeared.

Someone knew about the missing money.

Someone knew about the $75,000 transfer.

And apparently, someone knew much more than he did.

“Marcus?””

His mother's quiet voice brought him back to reality.

Evelyn was sitting in the armchair, holding the photograph of her late husband against her chest.

“What's wrong, sweetheart?””

Marcus locked his phone.

“Nothing, Mom. Just something I need to take care of.””

Evelyn studied his face.

“Is it about Vanessa?””

He hesitated.

“Yes.””

She lowered her eyes.

“I never wanted to come between you two.””

Marcus crouched in front of her.

“Mom, listen to me. You didn't come between anyone. You were mistreated in your own home. That's not your fault.””

“But she's your wife.””

“And you're my mother.””

Evelyn looked away, tears gathering in her eyes.

“I remember when you were little. Your father worked two jobs, and I cleaned houses during the day. Sometimes we couldn't afford new shoes for you. But I never let you go to school hungry.””

Marcus gently took her hand.

“I remember.””

“I used to tell your father that one day you'd have a beautiful home and a family of your own. He was so proud of you.””

Marcus swallowed hard.

“I wish Dad were here.””

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“He would have been disappointed in what happened today.””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“No, Mom. He would have been furious.””

A noise came from upstairs.

Vanessa was dragging something across the bedroom floor.

Marcus stood.

“Mom, I'm going to arrange for someone to stay with you tonight. I don't want you alone while I'm dealing with this.””

“Please don't send me away.””

He immediately shook his head.

“I'm not sending you anywhere. This is your home.””

For the first time that evening, Evelyn allowed herself to cry openly.

The next morning, Marcus drove to a small coffee shop downtown.

The message had instructed him to arrive at 9:30 a.m.

At 9:27, a man wearing a gray coat entered.

He was in his early forties, with short dark hair and a leather briefcase.

“Marcus Hale?””

“Yes. Who are you?””

The man extended his hand.

“Daniel Reed.””

Marcus immediately stood.

“Daniel?””

The man nodded.

“Before you hit me, please understand that I'm not the person who stole your money.””

Marcus grabbed his collar.

“Thirty-six thousand dollars from my mother's savings went into an account connected to your name. And seventy-five thousand dollars disappeared from my company account. You want me to believe you're innocent?””

Daniel didn't resist.

“I want you to look at the documents first.””

He opened his briefcase and removed several printed bank records.

Marcus released him.

“Start talking.””

Daniel sat down.

“About eleven months ago, Vanessa contacted me. She said her husband wanted to invest in a property development project. She showed me documents that appeared to authorize the transfer of funds.””

“Which funds?””

“Your mother's savings first. Later, money from your construction company.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Vanessa had no authority to access my business account.””

“I know that now.””

“What do you mean, now?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“She told me she was your financial manager. She said you had given her permission to handle certain payments while you were traveling.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That's a lie.””

“I figured that out when I tried to verify the investment.””

Daniel slid another document across the table.

It showed a company registration.

*GRACE DEVELOPMENT HOLDINGS LLC.*

Marcus frowned.

“What's this?””

“The company Vanessa created to receive the transfers.””

Marcus read the registration details.

The listed managing member was Gloria.

He looked up.

“Why is Gloria involved?””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Because she was supposed to be the person buying the property.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“What property?””

“A condominium development outside the city. The money was supposed to cover an initial deposit and renovation costs.””

“And did it?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. The development never existed.””

Marcus stared at him.

“What?””

“The property address belonged to an empty commercial lot. The seller's company was registered using a fake identity.””

Marcus pushed the papers away.

“So Gloria and Vanessa created a fake investment?””

Daniel nodded.

“I believe they intended to make the money disappear through several accounts. I stopped processing additional transfers when I discovered the documents were fraudulent.””

“Why didn't you report it?””

“I tried contacting Vanessa. She threatened to accuse me of stealing the money myself. Then I received a call from someone claiming to be your attorney, telling me to stay away from your family.””

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

“I don't have an attorney who contacted you.””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“That's exactly why I came here.””

He removed one final envelope.

Inside were screenshots of messages between Vanessa and Gloria.

Marcus began reading.

His hands went cold.

*Vanessa:* Once the money clears, we'll move it again.

*Gloria:* What if Marcus checks the accounts?

*Vanessa:* He won't. He trusts me.

*Gloria:* And Evelyn?

*Vanessa:* She's old. She won't understand half of what happened.

Marcus stopped reading.

Daniel watched him carefully.

“There's something else.””

“What?””

“The messages suggest they weren't only planning to take the money.””

Marcus looked up.

“What else could they possibly want?””

Daniel pointed to a highlighted section.

“Your mother's signature.””

Marcus read the sentence.

Then his jaw tightened.

*Vanessa:* Once Evelyn signs the property authorization, everything becomes easier.

*Gloria:* What if she refuses?

*Vanessa:* I'll make her believe Marcus wants her to sign.

Marcus slowly placed the papers on the table.

“What property authorization?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know. But I think you should ask your mother whether Vanessa has brought her any documents recently.””

Marcus immediately pulled out his phone.

He called Evelyn.

She answered after two rings.

“Hello, sweetheart?””

“Mom, I need you to tell me something. Has Vanessa asked you to sign any paperwork recently?””

There was a pause.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“Yes.””

Marcus stood.

“What paperwork?””

“A few weeks ago, she brought me some documents. She said they were related to your father's estate.””

Marcus felt his heart pound.

“Did you sign them?””

“No. I told her I wanted to ask you first.””

“Where are those papers now?””

“In the little cabinet beside my bed.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

The man was already closing his briefcase.

“Marcus,” Daniel said quietly, “whatever you do, don't let them know you have those messages.””

Marcus ended the call.

He grabbed the documents.

But as he reached the coffee shop entrance, another message appeared on his phone.

This time, it was from Vanessa.

*"I know you've been meeting Daniel. Come home immediately. Your mother needs to explain what she signed before you make a terrible mistake.""*

Marcus stopped walking.

He hadn't told Vanessa where he was going.

And Daniel had promised he hadn't contacted anyone.

Someone was watching him.

But who?
