Chapter 7: The Man Who Betrayed Me Was Sitting Beside Me

Marcus stared at the signature beneath Vanessa's appointment.
Richard Collins.
His business partner of twelve years.
The man who had stood beside him when he started Hale Construction with nothing but a borrowed truck, two employees, and a small office above a hardware store.
The man who had attended his father's funeral.
The man who had once promised him, "If anything ever happens to you, Marcus, I'll protect this company like it's my own.""
Now Richard was helping his wife take it away.
Marcus called him immediately.
“Richard, explain this document.””
There was a brief silence.
“What document?””
“The recommendation letter. Your signature is at the bottom.””
Richard sighed.
“Marcus, I was hoping we'd discuss this in person.””
“Why did you recommend Vanessa as managing director?””
“Because the company needs stability.””
“Stability? You know she's never managed a construction project in her life!””
Richard's voice became colder.
“You haven't been yourself lately, Marcus. You've been distracted. Your family problems are affecting your judgment.””
Marcus gripped the phone.
“My family problems?””
“Yes. Perhaps it's time you stepped aside.””
“Did you know about the unauthorized transfers?””
Another silence.
Then Richard said something that made Marcus's blood run cold.
“I know more than you think.””
Marcus ended the call.
For several seconds, he stood motionless in his office.
Then he opened the company's security dashboard.
He requested a report showing every login, every document download, and every external account connected to the company's financial systems.
The report took several minutes to generate.
When it finally appeared, Marcus saw something unexpected.
Richard hadn't simply recommended Vanessa.
He had personally approved three separate transfers from the company account.
Two were labeled consulting expenses.
The third was listed as a payment to Grace Development Holdings.
The same company connected to Gloria.
Marcus printed the records.
Then he called his attorney, James Carter.
“James, I need an emergency meeting.””
“What happened?””
“My wife and business partner are attempting to remove me from my own company. I also have evidence of unauthorized financial transfers.””
James became serious.
“Don't confront either of them again until we review the evidence. Send me everything.””
Marcus emailed the documents.
“Can you stop the board vote?””
“I'll examine the company's governing documents and contact the board secretary. But Marcus, I need you to understand something. If Richard has been preparing this for months, there may be more paperwork than you've seen.””
Marcus looked at the forged medical assessment.
“I know.””
The following morning, Marcus arrived at company headquarters at 8:15 a.m.
Richard was already there.
He stood near the conference room, holding a coffee cup and speaking to two board members.
When he saw Marcus, his expression barely changed.
“Morning, partner.””
Marcus stopped in front of him.
“Don't call me that.””
Richard glanced at the other men.
“Can we talk privately?””
“No. We can talk right here.””
One of the board members, Thomas, cleared his throat.
“Marcus, perhaps we should begin the meeting.””
Marcus walked into the conference room.
Vanessa was already seated at the head of the table.
She wore a cream-colored suit, expensive heels, and a confident smile.
A folder rested in front of her.
When Marcus entered, she looked up.
“Good morning, darling.””
Marcus didn't answer.
Vanessa turned toward the board.
“I'm glad everyone could make it. I know this transition has been difficult, but I believe we can move forward together.””
Marcus pulled out a chair.
“Transition?””
Vanessa smiled.
“As you all know, Marcus has been experiencing significant personal and medical difficulties. His ability to manage the business has become questionable.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Who told you I was medically unfit?””
Vanessa opened her folder.
“I have documentation.””
She distributed copies of the suspicious medical assessment.
Marcus watched the board members read it.
Then he placed another document on the table.
“This is a statement from the clinic named on that letter. They have confirmed that I was never examined there and that the signature is not authentic.””
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Richard immediately intervened.
“Marcus, let's not turn this into a personal argument.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Then let's discuss the $75,000 you authorized to be transferred to Grace Development Holdings.””
Richard's face tightened.
Thomas looked up.
“What transfer?””
Marcus distributed the bank records.
“Three unauthorized payments were approved through our financial system. One of them went directly to a company controlled by Gloria, Vanessa's mother.””
The conference room erupted in whispers.
Vanessa stood.
“These are accusations!””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes. And I have the transaction records.””
Richard slammed his hand against the table.
“Enough! You're making the company look unstable.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“Funny. I was thinking the same thing about a partner who secretly helps my wife steal from me.””
Richard's face turned red.
“You have no proof I knew the money was being stolen.””
Marcus opened his laptop.
“I have your authorization codes.””
Richard said nothing.
Then the conference room door opened.
James Carter walked inside carrying a black briefcase.
“Good morning, everyone.””
He placed a stack of documents on the table.
“As Marcus's attorney, I am formally notifying the board that the attempted change in company management is disputed. The supporting medical documentation appears fraudulent, and the financial transactions are under investigation.””
Vanessa turned toward Richard.
He avoided her eyes.
James continued.
“Furthermore, the board should know that Marcus has not voluntarily resigned, transferred his authority, or authorized his wife to act on his behalf.””
Thomas leaned forward.
“Then what happens to today's vote?””
James closed his briefcase.
“It should be suspended until the relevant documents have been independently verified.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“I agree.””
One by one, the other board members followed.
Vanessa's carefully prepared smile collapsed.
“You can't do this!””
Thomas looked at her.
“Mrs. Hale, you have no formal position in this company. You cannot appoint yourself managing director.””
Vanessa turned toward Marcus.
“You planned this!””
Marcus shook his head.
“No. I simply brought the truth into the room.””
Richard suddenly stood.
“This is ridiculous. I'm leaving.””
James placed another document in front of him.
“Mr. Collins, please don't leave yet. This is a notice requiring preservation of all company financial records and communications related to the disputed transactions.””
Richard stared at the paper.
For the first time, he looked frightened.
After the meeting, Vanessa followed Marcus into the hallway.
“You've humiliated me.””
Marcus stopped.
“You humiliated yourself.””
“You think your mother is innocent? You think she doesn't know what she's doing?””
“Leave my mother out of this.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You've always chosen her. Every time.””
Marcus looked at her for several seconds.
“Do you remember our wedding day?””
Vanessa frowned.
“What?””
“You stood beside me and promised we'd never betray each other.””
She looked away.
“And now?””
“Now I can't even recognize you.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears, but Marcus had seen enough performances to know that tears didn't necessarily mean regret.
“You're going to regret this,” she whispered.
Marcus walked away.
But before he reached the elevator, his phone rang.
It was Chloe Bennett, Vanessa's former assistant.
“Mr. Hale?””
“Yes.””
“I need to tell you something important.””
“Go ahead.””
“I have the original files Vanessa asked me to prepare. But there's something you don't know.””
Marcus entered the elevator.
“What?””
Chloe's voice trembled.
“Richard wasn't the person who first introduced Vanessa to the fake investment company.””
“Who was?””
Chloe paused.
Then she whispered:
“Your father-in-law.””
Marcus stopped breathing.
May you like
His father-in-law had died six years earlier.
And if Chloe was telling the truth, the betrayal had started long before Vanessa ever became his wife.
