Chapter 8: The Woman Who Changed the Hospital Records

The Riverside Hotel had been closed for nearly two years.

Its faded sign hung above the entrance, and weeds had begun growing through the cracked parking lot.

At nine o'clock, Marcus and I arrived with the authorities already informed of the meeting.

We didn't know whether Nicole would show up.

But at 9:07, a black sedan pulled into the parking lot.

A woman stepped out.

Nicole Bennett.

She looked nothing like the confident woman whose voice I had heard through the phone.

Her hair was pulled into a messy ponytail. She wore sunglasses despite the cloudy weather, and she kept looking over her shoulder.

When she saw me, she stopped.

“Darius?””

“Yes.””

She approached cautiously.

“Where's the envelope?””

“I don't have it.””

Her face tightened.

“Then Gregory was right.””

“What did he tell you?””

“That you were coming to take the evidence and make sure nobody could trace it back to your family.””

I stared at her.

“My family?””

She gave a bitter laugh.

“You still think this is about family loyalty?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Nicole, I'm Marcus Reed. I'm representing Darius. We need you to explain your involvement with the hospital records and the trust documents.””

Nicole looked at him.

“Do you have any idea what you're asking me to admit?””

“Yes,” Marcus replied.

“And that's why you should tell the truth.””

She glanced toward the road.

Then she pulled a small flash drive from her coat pocket.

“This contains copies of the original records.””

I didn't reach for it.

“What exactly did you change?””

Nicole swallowed.

“Rebecca's emergency contact information. I was working for Adrian Cross at the time. He told me it was an administrative correction authorized by the family.””

“Who authorized it?””

“Gregory.””

I shook my head.

“Why would my brother have authority over my wife's medical records?””

“He didn't. But he had access to your personal information, including your signature.””

Marcus asked, “Did Gregory provide the forged authorization?””

Nicole nodded.

“And did you know it was forged?””

She looked away.

“I suspected.””

I felt sick.

“What happened that night?””

Nicole took a deep breath.

“Rebecca was admitted to the hospital after experiencing severe complications. She had already been asking questions about financial documents she believed were fraudulent.””

My mind raced.

Rebecca had been investigating something.

Something involving our daughter's inheritance.

Nicole continued.

“She told the hospital staff that she wanted to speak with you. But the contact details had been changed.””

I stepped closer.

“Did she ask for me?””

“Yes.””

“How many times?””

Nicole's eyes filled.

“Three times.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Three?””

“She asked for you repeatedly. The nurses recorded it in their notes.””

Marcus looked furious.

“Why wasn't he contacted?””

Nicole began crying.

“Because the new emergency contact was listed as Gregory. And Gregory told the hospital that you were traveling and couldn't be reached.””

I stared at her.

I had been forty minutes away.

I had been sitting in my office, answering emails and waiting for the hospital to call.

I remembered checking my phone repeatedly.

I remembered wondering why nobody had updated me.

I remembered arriving the next morning and being told Rebecca had died before I could say goodbye.

My knees weakened.

“Did she know I wasn't coming?””

Nicole nodded.

“She believed you had abandoned her.””

The words hit me harder than any physical blow.

I turned away.

Marcus placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Darius, we need to let her finish.””

I looked back at Nicole.

“What else?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Rebecca left a statement before she died. She said she had discovered that someone was attempting to transfer money from Lily's trust. She also said she had evidence identifying the person responsible.””

“Was it Gregory?””

Nicole hesitated.

“I don't know.””

“Don't lie to me.””

“I swear I don't know. But Adrian wanted the statement destroyed.””

“Why?””

“Because it named someone else.””

I looked at Marcus.

He nodded for her to continue.

Nicole opened a folder and removed several printed emails.

The first showed communication between Adrian Cross and Gregory.

The second involved Vanessa.

The third contained an unfamiliar name.

Evelyn Hale.

My mother.

I stared at the paper.

“No.””

Nicole lowered her eyes.

“Your mother was listed as the original recipient of the documents.””

My mother had died four years earlier.

She had been the person who helped Rebecca choose Lily's name. She had held my daughter during her first hours in the world.

I had never heard her connected to the trust.

“That's impossible.””

Nicole shook her head.

“Your mother had a private agreement with Rebecca. She was supposed to protect the original trust documents if anything happened.””

Marcus examined the emails.

“Was there a second trustee?””

Nicole nodded.

“Yes. Rebecca appointed someone she trusted.””

“Who?””

Nicole handed him another page.

A name appeared at the bottom.

Margaret Carter.

I turned slowly.

“Mrs. Carter?””

Nicole nodded.

“Rebecca trusted her with a sealed document.””

I stared at the woman who had worked in our home for eleven years.

The woman who had comforted Lily after her mother died.

The woman who had just helped me uncover the recordings.

“Why didn't she tell me?””

Nicole answered quietly.

“Because Rebecca instructed her not to reveal the document unless someone tried to interfere with Lily's inheritance.””

Marcus looked up.

“Where is it now?””

Nicole swallowed.

“That's the problem. Gregory has been searching for it for years.””

My phone rang.

Mrs. Carter.

I answered immediately.

“What's wrong?””

Her voice was urgent.

“Sir, you need to come home.””

“What's happened?””

“Someone came to the house.””

“Who?””

“Mr. Gregory.””

My blood ran cold.

“Is Lily safe?””

“Yes. She's with me. But he demanded to search Rebecca's old room.””

“Did you let him?””

“No, sir.””

I heard something fall in the background.

Then Mrs. Carter whispered:

“He said if I didn't give him the envelope, he would tell Lily what really happened to her mother.””

I closed my eyes.

“Mrs. Carter, listen to me. Take Lily somewhere secure. The authorities are on their way.””

She began crying.

“Sir, there's something I need to tell you.””

“What?””

“Rebecca didn't just leave me an envelope.””

I stopped breathing.

“What else?””

“She left me a letter addressed to Lily.””

I looked at Marcus.

Mrs. Carter continued.

“And she told me that if Gregory ever came looking for it, I should give it to you immediately.””

A loud bang sounded through the phone.

“Mrs. Carter?””

No answer.

“Margaret!””

Then I heard Gregory's voice.

“Give me the envelope, Margaret.””

The call disconnected.

I started running toward the car.

Marcus followed.

As we drove, he contacted the authorities and requested an immediate response to the house.

I kept calling Mrs. Carter.

Nothing.

Then my phone received a message.

A photograph.

It showed Lily sitting on the living room sofa, holding Rebecca's old photograph.

Beneath it were six words.

*Bring the original envelope, or she's next.*

I stared at the screen.

Marcus looked over.

“Darius?””

I showed him.

His expression hardened.

“Don't go inside alone.””

But I was already thinking about something else.

The blue envelope.

Rebecca's final letter.

The truth about her death.

And the possibility that the person who had been threatening my daughter wasn't just trying to steal her inheritance.

He was trying to keep her from discovering what her mother had known.
