Chapter 3: The Box Under the Floorboards

“What other box?”” I asked.
Vanessa didn't answer.
She picked up her purse and moved toward the door.
Marcus stepped aside, leaving the doorway clear but watching her carefully.
“Vanessa,” he said, “you need to stop and explain what you mean.””
“I don't owe either of you an explanation.””
I held up my hand.
“Where is Nicole?””
“Why?””
“Because apparently she's involved in something that concerns my daughter.””
Vanessa's eyes darted toward the hallway.
“She doesn't know anything.””
“Then you won't mind if we call her.””
Vanessa tightened her grip on her purse.
“You can't keep me here.””
“I haven't touched you,” I replied.
“Nobody is keeping you anywhere. But I am not allowing you unsupervised access to Lily while we establish what happened.””
She laughed bitterly.
“You think you can just decide that?””
Marcus answered before I could.
“Given the evidence we've seen, Darius is taking immediate steps to protect his daughter. The appropriate legal authorities will determine any further arrangements.””
Vanessa looked between us.
“You're both making a huge mistake.””
I didn't respond.
Instead, I walked out and went downstairs.
Lily was sitting on the sofa with Mrs. Carter. A small cup of hot chocolate rested on the coffee table.
She was wearing the pink blanket Rebecca had knitted for her before she died.
When she saw me, she immediately put down her cup.
“Daddy?””
I sat beside her.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
“Is Mommy Vanessa angry?””
I took her little hand.
“She might be. But that's not your fault.””
“Are you sending me away?””
The question made my heart ache.
I turned toward her.
“Why would you think that?””
She stared at her fingers.
“Because she said if I told you what happened, you would get tired of me.””
I pulled her into my arms.
“Listen to me, Lily. You could tell me the hardest thing in the world, and I would never stop loving you. You understand?””
She nodded.
“Even if I make Mommy Vanessa mad?””
“Even then.””
She rested her head against my chest.
For a moment, I simply held her.
Then she whispered something.
“Daddy, can I tell you a secret?””
“Always.””
“Mommy Vanessa made me put Mommy's necklace in the trash.””
I pulled back.
“Which necklace?””
“The little silver one with the heart.””
Rebecca's necklace.
It had been a gift from her grandmother. After Rebecca died, I had given it to Lily to keep until she was old enough to wear it.
“Where is it now?””
Lily pointed toward the stairs.
“She said she put it with the other things.””
“What other things, baby?””
“The box under the floor.””
I exchanged a glance with Mrs. Carter.
“What box?””
Lily hesitated.
“There's a loose board in the little room upstairs. Mommy Vanessa put things inside it. She said I wasn't allowed to tell anyone.””
I felt the room tilt.
The little room was Rebecca's old dressing room.
I had kept it locked after her death. Vanessa had asked to use it for storage when she moved in.
I had given her the key without thinking.
“Sweetheart,” I said gently, “did you see her put anything inside?””
Lily nodded.
“She put Mommy's pictures there. And the letters.””
My chest tightened.
“Did she put anything else?””
Lily looked toward the stairs.
“A brown envelope.””
“What was inside?””
“I don't know. She said it was something that would make Daddy stop asking questions.””
I stood up.
“Marcus, can you stay with Lily?””
He nodded.
“Of course.””
I turned to Mrs. Carter.
“Please don't leave her alone.””
Then I walked upstairs.
Vanessa was standing near the bedroom doorway, speaking rapidly into her phone.
“I told you not to send anything here!”” she whispered.
When she saw me, she ended the call.
“Who were you talking to?””
“My sister.””
“About the box?””
Her expression hardened.
“Lily needs to stop telling stories.””
I walked past her toward the dressing room.
She rushed after me.
“Darius, don't go in there.””
I stopped.
“Why?””
“Because it's private.””
I looked at the door.
“You told me you didn't know where Rebecca's belongings were.””
“I said I didn't know about any box.””
“Then there's nothing to worry about.””
I opened the door.
The room smelled faintly of cedar and old perfume.
Rebecca's dressing table was still against the wall. Her mirror, her jewelry tray, and the small ceramic vase she had bought on our honeymoon were all there.
But several drawers were empty.
I walked to the far corner.
A rectangular rug covered part of the wooden floor.
Vanessa stood behind me.
“Darius, please. You're making this worse.””
I moved the rug.
One floorboard looked newer than the others.
I crouched and examined it.
There were fresh scratches along the edge.
“Where's the key to this?”” I asked.
Vanessa said nothing.
I called Mrs. Carter.
She arrived with a small toolbox.
After several minutes, we managed to lift the board.
Beneath it sat a narrow wooden compartment.
Inside was a brown envelope, two plastic storage bags, and a small velvet pouch.
I reached for the envelope first.
My name was written across the front.
In Rebecca's handwriting.
My hands began to shake.
“That's mine,” Vanessa said suddenly.
I looked at her.
“What?””
“The envelope. It belongs to me.””
I opened it.
Inside was a document, several handwritten pages, and a photograph of Rebecca holding newborn Lily.
The first page carried the name of a law firm.
I recognized the letterhead immediately.
It was the firm that had handled Rebecca's estate.
I began reading.
The document referred to a trust established for Lily shortly before Rebecca died.
I had known about the trust. Rebecca had wanted our daughter to have financial security, regardless of what happened to either of us.
But the next page contained something I had never seen.
A formal request to change the trust's beneficiary arrangements.
The signature at the bottom was not mine.
It was Vanessa's.
My blood ran cold.
“Why is your signature on a document concerning my daughter's trust?””
Vanessa's lips parted.
She said nothing.
Marcus entered the room and examined the pages.
“Darius, don't touch anything else. We need to preserve this exactly as it is.””
I nodded.
He photographed the documents and called the specialist he had contacted earlier.
Vanessa backed toward the door.
“You're misunderstanding everything.””
I held up the page.
“Did you try to take money from Lily's trust?””
“No!””
“Then why is your signature here?””
She shook her head.
“Nicole handled the paperwork.””
“Nicole?””
“She told me it was just an administrative form!””
Marcus looked up.
“Then why was it hidden under the floor?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“I was protecting myself.””
“From what?””
She didn't answer.
I reached into the compartment and picked up the velvet pouch.
Inside was Rebecca's silver heart necklace.
Lily's necklace.
I closed my fist around it.
Then I saw a small folded note tucked beneath the pouch.
It was addressed to me.
Unlike the other documents, this one had a date written across the top.
Three days before Rebecca died.
I unfolded it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Darius, if anything happens to me, please protect Lily from anyone who tries to make her forget who she is. There is something I discovered about the people around us, and I never got the chance to explain it to you.
I read the sentence twice.
Then I turned the paper over.
There was another line.
The person I am worried about is closer to our family than you think.
I slowly raised my eyes toward Vanessa.
She was staring at the note.
Her lips trembled.
“Where did you get that?”” she whispered.
I took one step toward the doorway.
“That's what I'm going to find out.””
Then Marcus noticed something written in tiny letters at the bottom of the page.
A name.
Not Vanessa's.
Not Nicole's.
It was the name of the person who had witnessed Rebecca signing the original trust documents.
Marcus went completely still.
“Darius,” he whispered.
“Do you know who this is?””
I looked down.
And the name made my stomach turn.
Because the person Rebecca had feared was not a stranger.
It was someone who had been standing beside me at my wedding.
May you like
Someone I had trusted with my daughter's future.
And someone Vanessa had just called on the phone.
