Chapter 2: What the Cameras Revealed

The video began with Lily sitting at the kitchen table.
It was dated three weeks earlier.
She was wearing her favorite yellow pajamas, eating cereal from a pink bowl.
Vanessa stood behind her, holding a pair of scissors.
“Sit properly,” Vanessa ordered.
Lily looked up.
“I'm sitting properly.””
“Don't answer me.””
Vanessa snatched the bowl away.
“I don't want to eat anymore,” Lily whispered.
“You haven't finished.””
“I'm full.””
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Your father spends thousands of dollars on you, and this is how you behave?””
Lily lowered her eyes.
“I'm sorry.””
“Say it louder.””
“I'm sorry, Mommy Vanessa.””
Vanessa placed the bowl back on the table.
“Good. Now, when your father comes home, you're going to tell him you want your hair cut.””
Lily shook her head.
“No. Daddy said I could keep it long.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“Your father doesn't make all the decisions in this house.””
The video ended.
I stared at the screen.
“Where did you get this?”” I asked.
Mrs. Carter swallowed.
“From the kitchen security camera, sir. I saved it because I was worried.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I tried. But Mrs. Vanessa told me I would lose my job if I interfered in family matters.””
I felt sick.
“How many recordings do you have?””
“Several.””
She opened another file.
This time, the footage showed Vanessa standing in Lily's bedroom.
Lily was holding a framed photograph of Rebecca.
Vanessa reached for it.
“Why do you keep looking at that picture?””
“Because I miss Mommy.””
“You have a mother here.””
“But she's my mommy too.””
Vanessa pulled the photograph from her hands.
“Your real mother isn't coming back. You need to stop acting like she is.””
Lily began crying.
Vanessa placed the photograph inside a drawer and closed it.
“Tomorrow, I want this room cleaned. All these pictures are coming down.””
I clenched my jaw.
Mrs. Carter paused the recording.
“There's something else, sir.””
She opened a third video.
It showed Vanessa sitting on the living room sofa, speaking on the phone.
The date was five days earlier.
“I'm telling you, Nicole,” Vanessa said, laughing.
“Once that little girl stops looking like Rebecca, things will become easier.””
A woman's voice came through the phone.
“Are you sure Darius won't notice?””
“He barely notices anything. He's always at work. Besides, he feels guilty about losing his first wife. I can make him do whatever I want.””
My fingers tightened around the tablet.
Vanessa continued.
“I'm not going to spend the next fifteen years raising someone else's child while she reminds everyone of the woman who came before me.””
Nicole laughed.
“So what's your plan?””
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“I'm starting with the hair. Then the pictures. Then the bedroom. Eventually, she'll stop bringing Rebecca up.””
I stopped the recording.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then I asked Mrs. Carter a question.
“Has Lily ever told you Vanessa hurt her?””
Mrs. Carter nodded slowly.
“She came to me one night with a red mark on her wrist.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“She said Mrs. Vanessa grabbed her because she wouldn't put away her mother's necklace.””
I looked toward the staircase.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Lily begged me not to. She said Mrs. Vanessa told her you would send her away if she caused trouble.””
I closed my eyes.
That sentence hurt more than anything I had heard all afternoon.
My daughter believed that telling me the truth might cost her the only parent she had left.
I handed the tablet back.
“Thank you for telling me.””
Mrs. Carter wiped her cheeks.
“Sir, I love that little girl. Her mother was very kind to everyone in this house. I couldn't keep watching.””
I nodded.
“You did the right thing.””
Just then, my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
“Where are you?”” she demanded.
“Downstairs.””
“Come back up. We need to settle this.””
“I'll be there.””
“Bring your ridiculous lawyer if you want. I'm not afraid of him.””
I ended the call.
Marcus arrived twenty minutes later.
He had represented me through the estate arrangements after Rebecca died. He knew Lily, and he had attended my wedding.
When I showed him the recordings, his expression changed.
“Darius, this is serious.””
“I know.””
“Has she ever been alone with Lily?””
“Almost every weekday.””
Marcus removed his glasses.
“Then we need to make sure Lily is safe first. We also need to preserve this evidence and speak with the appropriate authorities if there's reason to believe she's been physically harmed.””
I nodded.
“Can you arrange for a family-law specialist to advise us tonight?””
“Already making the call.””
I looked upstairs.
Vanessa was waiting in the makeup room.
I walked back into the room where everything had started.
She stood in front of the mirror, applying lipstick as if the afternoon had been completely ordinary.
“Finally,” she said.
“Are we done with the theatrics?””
Marcus stepped in behind me.
Vanessa's lipstick stopped halfway across her mouth.
“You actually brought him here?””
Marcus calmly introduced himself.
“Good afternoon, Vanessa.””
She laughed.
“Don't bother pretending this is a legal emergency. Darius is upset because I gave his daughter a haircut.””
I placed the tablet on the vanity.
“Watch the recordings.””
Vanessa glanced at the screen.
Then she looked at me.
“I don't have to watch anything.””
“Then explain why you told your sister you wanted to erase Rebecca from Lily's life.””
Her face tightened.
“You're twisting my words.””
“Explain the necklace.””
“She's a manipulative child!””
Marcus immediately raised his hand.
“Careful, Vanessa.””
She turned toward him.
“Stay out of this!””
Then she faced me.
“Darius, think about what you're doing. I'm your wife. We have a life together.””
I looked at her wedding ring.
“Did you ever love Lily?””
Vanessa scoffed.
“Love? I married you, didn't I?””
The answer was so revealing that I almost laughed.
She had just admitted that she considered my daughter an inconvenience attached to the man she wanted.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You need to remember something. If you throw me out, you'll lose half of what we built together.””
Marcus opened his briefcase.
“That's not necessarily how this works.””
Vanessa stared at him.
I reached into my pocket and placed a small silver key on the vanity.
She frowned.
“What's that?””
“The key to the storage room.””
“What storage room?””
“The one where Rebecca's belongings were kept before you moved them.””
Vanessa's face lost some color.
I continued.
“I checked the inventory last week. Several boxes are missing.””
She looked away.
“I'm not discussing that.””
“Where are Rebecca's belongings?””
“I don't know.””
“Where are the photographs? Her letters? The little jewelry box Lily inherited?””
Vanessa suddenly became very quiet.
Marcus looked at me.
“Darius?””
I nodded.
“She's been throwing them away.””
Vanessa snapped.
“I was cleaning! You expect me to live surrounded by another woman's possessions?””
I stepped toward the door.
“No. I expected you to respect a little girl's memories.””
Vanessa's voice rose.
“Darius, don't you dare walk away from me!””
I stopped.
Then I turned around.
“You have one opportunity to tell me where you put everything.””
She crossed her arms.
“Or what?””
I looked directly into her eyes.
“Or we'll find out together.””
Her phone vibrated.
She glanced at it.
The name on the screen was Nicole.
A message appeared.
*Did you finish getting rid of the evidence?*
Vanessa grabbed the phone immediately.
But Marcus had already seen it.
He slowly closed his briefcase.
“Darius,” he said, “I think we need to find out what evidence she's talking about.””
Vanessa backed away from the vanity.
For the first time that afternoon, she looked genuinely frightened.
May you like
And then she said something that changed everything.
“You don't understand. Nicole was supposed to take care of Lily's things. She wasn't supposed to tell you about the other box.””
