Chapter 18: The Family Before Mine
I didn’t sleep that night.
How could I?
My entire understanding of my family had shifted.
My father.
A man who rarely spoke about the past.
A man who always told me to trust my instincts.
A man who had quietly prepared for something I never knew was coming.
And Linda.
The woman who had entered my life through Vanessa.
The woman who had nearly destroyed my children.
I needed answers.
The next morning, I went through my father’s old belongings.
Most people would have thrown them away after six years.
I couldn’t.
Not because I was unable to let go.
Because now I wondered what he had been trying to tell me.
At the bottom of an old box, I found a small journal.
I had never seen it before.
The cover was worn.
Inside was my father’s handwriting.
The first page had a name.
Linda.
My hands tightened.
I began reading.
*“I thought I could help her. I was wrong.””*
I turned the page.
My father wrote about meeting Linda years ago.
Before she was Vanessa’s mother-in-law.
Before she became part of our family.
She had been a neighbor.
A friend.
Someone who always appeared helpful.
But he noticed something.
She needed control.
He wrote about watching her manipulate people.
Making them doubt themselves.
Making them dependent.
Then I found the sentence that stopped me.
*“She doesn’t hurt people because she hates them. She hurts them because she believes they belong to her.””*
I closed my eyes.
The exact same pattern.
The exact same behavior.
Different families.
Different victims.
I kept reading.
My father had tried to warn Vanessa.
But Linda convinced Vanessa that he was interfering.
Then my father tried to warn me.
But I was already in love.
I turned another page.
A folded document fell out.
It was a letter.
Addressed to me.
My father had written it years ago.
But never sent it.
I opened it.
*“Daniel, if you are reading this, something happened that I hoped would never happen.””*
My heart raced.
*“Trust your wife’s heart, but question the people who control her fear.””*
I stopped.
My father wasn’t blaming Vanessa.
He understood.
He knew she was another person trapped in Linda’s influence.
The final line made me emotional.
*“Protect the children first. Then help the adults who are brave enough to change.””*
I sat there for a long time.
Then my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Daniel.””
“What happened?””
“It’s Linda.””
My body tensed.
“What did she do?””
“She contacted me.””
“What did she say?””
Vanessa was quiet.
“She said she has proof that will destroy us.””
I stood.
“What proof?””
“She said she knows something about your father.””
My grip tightened.
“What does she know?””
Vanessa whispered:
“She said your father wasn’t investigating her.””
A pause.
“She said he was afraid of her.””
I felt a chill.
“Afraid why?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“She said your father knew what happened to her first husband.””
I froze.
“First husband?””
“Yes.””
Another secret.
Another hidden chapter.
I grabbed my jacket.
“Where are you?””
“At home.””
“I’m coming.””
When I arrived, Vanessa was sitting at the kitchen table.
She looked exhausted.
“She sent me a file.””
“What file?””
Vanessa handed me her phone.
There was one document.
A police report.
The name at the top belonged to Linda’s first husband.
I read the details.
Then I saw the date.
The same year my father met Linda.
My stomach turned.
Because the report contained one line that changed everything:
*“Witness states Linda Carter’s behavior escalated after discovering her husband planned to leave.””*
I looked at Vanessa.
“Carter?””
She nodded slowly.
“Daniel…”
I looked back at the report.
Linda had a past.
A past she buried.
A past connected to my father.
And then another message appeared.
May you like
From Linda.
*“Now you know why your father stayed quiet.””*
