Chapter 17: The Last Secret

I stared at the photograph.

My first reaction was disbelief.

Then anger.

Then confusion.

Because the person standing beside Linda was someone I trusted.

Someone who had comforted me during the worst moments.

Someone who had acted like they were on my side.

Michael.

My lawyer.

I immediately called him.

He answered on the second ring.

“Daniel?””

My voice was cold.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“Why?””

“Because I have a picture.””

Silence.

That silence told me everything.

“Daniel—”

“No.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“Explain.””

Michael sighed.

“I was hoping you’d never see that.””

My stomach dropped.

“See what?””

“The beginning.””

I stood up.

“The beginning of what?””

“The investigation.””

I felt my anger rise.

“You knew?””

“Not everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Michael was quiet.

Then he said:

“I knew Linda was dangerous before you did.””

I gripped the phone.

“Why?””

“Because I represented Vanessa during the first custody situation with Emma.””

The room became silent.

“You were involved back then?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Vanessa asked me not to.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“Nobody gets to hide things from me anymore.””

“I know.””

His voice sounded tired.

“I made mistakes.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

I sat down.

“What did you know?””

Michael explained.

Years ago, when Vanessa lost custody of Emma, Linda had manipulated the situation.

But there was something missing.

Evidence.

Proof.

Something that showed Linda’s involvement.

“She destroyed records,” Michael said.

I frowned.

“What?””

“She removed messages. Changed documents. Made sure everything looked like Vanessa’s failure.””

“And you couldn’t prove it?””

“No.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Then why are you with her?””

“I wasn’t.””

“Then what is this?””

Michael was quiet.

“That picture was taken during an undercover meeting.””

I stopped.

“Undercover?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“To get evidence.””

My anger slowed.

“You were investigating her?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Linda knew someone was watching.””

I looked at the photo again.

Michael standing beside Linda.

Not smiling.

Not relaxed.

Listening.

Recording.

“What did you find?””

His voice became serious.

“The person who sent you that picture wanted you to see only half the truth.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means they want you to distrust everyone.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who sent it?””

“I don’t know.””

Another message arrived.

Same unknown number.

This time, only one sentence.

*“Ask Michael who paid for the first camera.””*

I looked at my phone.

Then slowly looked up.

“Michael.””

“Yes?””

“Who paid for the cameras?””

Silence.

Too long.

Finally, he answered.

“Your father.””

I froze.

“My father?””

“He contacted me before you did.””

I sat there, stunned.

“My father has been dead for six years.””

“Yes.””

The words made no sense.

“Then how?””

Michael sighed.

“There was a trust fund.””

I remembered.

Years ago, my father created accounts for emergencies.

Money I never touched.

Money I forgot existed.

“Why would he do that?””

Michael’s voice softened.

“Because he knew Linda before you married Vanessa.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

“He met her.””

“How?””

“That’s the part we never understood.””

I looked at the photograph.

Everything I thought I knew was changing again.

My father.

Linda.

Vanessa.

A hidden history.

A pattern that started long before me.

“Michael.””

“Yes?””

“What did my father know?””

A long pause.

Then he said:

“Your father believed Linda destroyed another family before yours.””

I stood.

“Whose family?””

Michael hesitated.

May you like

Then answered:

“His.””
