Chapter 5: The Secret in My Mother's Letter
Dad immediately called the police.
He explained that someone had photographed my mother's grave and sent a threatening message to our home.
While he spoke, I sat at the kitchen table with my mother's envelope in front of me.
The paper felt fragile beneath my fingers.
I had spent ten years wondering what my mother would have thought of the person I was becoming.
Now I was about to read words she had written specifically for me.
Vanessa stood near the staircase.
She hadn't stopped crying.
Mia appeared at the top of the stairs, holding her MacBook.
"Mom?""
Vanessa looked up.
"Go back to your room.""
"What's happening?""
"Please, Mia.""
Mia descended two steps.
"Why is Dad calling the police?""
Daniel ended his call.
"Because someone has been threatening this family.""
Mia looked at me.
"Is this because of the money?""
I nodded.
She glanced at the laptop in her hands.
Then she slowly closed it.
"I didn't know," she whispered.
I looked at her.
"You knew Mom took money from my account.""
"I thought she had permission.""
"You heard me tell her I'd worked for months to save it.""
Mia looked down.
"I know.""
"Then why didn't you say anything?""
She had no answer.
Dad stepped forward.
"Mia, go sit down. We need to talk about something important.""
She obeyed reluctantly.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter, several photocopied legal documents, and a small photograph.
The letter began:
My darling Emily,
If you're reading this, it means I wasn't able to explain everything to you myself. I am sorry for that.
I pressed my lips together.
The next lines blurred.
Your grandfather loved you more than anything. He created a trust to make sure you would have opportunities even if something happened to me.
But someone discovered it.
His name is Michael Reeves.
I looked up.
Dad was watching me.
I continued reading.
Michael worked with me for several years. At first, I trusted him. He was charming, intelligent, and very good at making people believe that every decision he made was for their benefit.
Then I discovered that he had been using other people's identities to move money between accounts.
When I confronted him, he told me I had misunderstood.
When I refused to remain silent, he threatened me.
My hands trembled.
The letter continued.
I discovered that he had access to information about your grandfather's trust. He knew the account numbers, the trustees, and the legal arrangements.
I was able to prevent him from taking everything, but I couldn't recover the money that had already disappeared.
I turned the page.
Emily, there is one thing I need you to remember. If Michael ever returns, do not trust anyone who claims they can recover your inheritance without showing you the original documents.
And please, sweetheart, never believe that money is more important than your safety.
At the bottom was a sentence written in darker ink.
The original trust agreement is not where your father thinks it is.
I looked up.
"Dad?""
He leaned closer.
"What is it?""
I handed him the letter.
He read the final sentence twice.
"The original agreement?""
I nodded.
"She says it's not where you think it is.""
Dad frowned.
"I thought your grandfather's attorney kept it.""
He picked up the photocopied documents.
One was an old trust summary.
Another was a list of account transactions.
But the last document caught my attention.
It was a photograph of a small wooden box.
I recognized it immediately.
It had belonged to my mother.
After she died, Dad had placed it in the attic with her old belongings.
I used to open it when I was younger because it contained her jewelry and little handwritten notes.
"That's Mom's jewelry box," I said.
Dad looked at the picture.
"Where is it?""
"In the attic.""
He stood.
"Then we're going up.""
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"Daniel, don't.""
We all turned.
Dad stared at her.
"Why?""
She shook her head.
"Because you don't know what's in there.""
His expression changed.
"How would you know?""
Vanessa looked away.
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Have you been in Mom's things?""
"No.""
"Then why are you worried?""
Vanessa took a step backward.
"I was only trying to protect Mia.""
Dad's voice became dangerously quiet.
"Stop using your daughter as an excuse.""
Mia looked at her mother.
"Mom, what did you do?""
Vanessa began crying again.
"I didn't know what Michael wanted until it was too late.""
Dad headed toward the staircase.
I followed him.
The attic smelled of dust and cedar.
He switched on the light.
Boxes lined the walls, each labeled in his handwriting.
Christmas decorations.
Old schoolbooks.
Baby clothes.
And in the corner, beneath a folded blanket, sat my mother's wooden jewelry box.
I knelt and lifted it carefully.
The small brass lock was still attached.
Dad found the key in a drawer of the old dresser.
When I opened it, I saw my mother's necklace, a pair of earrings, and several folded letters.
But there was something else.
A tiny envelope taped beneath the wooden lining.
My fingers shook as I pulled it free.
Inside was a small USB drive and a handwritten note.
Daniel, if Michael ever returns, show Emily the recording before you make any decisions.
Dad stared at it.
"What recording?""
I handed him the drive.
We went downstairs and connected it to his laptop.
A single video file appeared.
The date was from six years earlier.
Dad clicked play.
My mother's face filled the screen.
She looked tired, but her eyes were steady.
"Daniel," she began.
"If you're watching this, Michael has found a way back into our lives.""
Dad's breathing changed.
My mother continued.
"I need you to understand something. The trust wasn't the only thing Michael wanted. He wanted the original account records because they prove who helped him move the money.""
She paused.
Then she looked directly into the camera.
"One of the people who helped him was someone you trusted.""
Dad leaned closer.
My mother's voice softened.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart. I know you wanted to believe everyone around you was good.""
Then she said a name.
"Vanessa.""
The room went silent.
Dad turned slowly toward his wife.
Vanessa was standing in the doorway.
Her face was white.
My mother continued.
"Vanessa was working with Michael before I met Daniel. She knew about the trust, and she knew that Michael planned to use my daughter to hide the stolen funds.""
Dad stood so quickly that his chair scraped across the floor.
"Is this true?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"That's not what happened.""
My mother's recorded voice continued.
"If Vanessa has entered your family, do not assume Michael is far behind.""
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Mia was crying.
Dad looked as though someone had struck him.
I stared at Vanessa.
"You knew about me before you married Dad?""
She covered her mouth.
"Emily...""
"You knew my mother?""
She nodded.
"And you married my father anyway?""
"I loved Daniel.""
"You knew Michael had stolen from my grandfather!""
"I didn't know everything!""
Dad stepped forward.
"How much did you know?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"I knew he was trying to get access to the trust. I didn't know he would hurt anyone.""
"Did you know he was alive?""
She hesitated.
Then she whispered, "Yes.""
Dad's face hardened.
"When?""
"Three months before our wedding.""
I felt sick.
Three months before our wedding.
She had entered our house knowing the man connected to my mother's death was still alive.
And she had brought his daughter into our family.
Then Mia suddenly spoke.
"Mom?""
Vanessa turned.
Mia was holding her phone.
"Why did Michael just send me a message?""
Everyone froze.
Mia showed us the screen.
May you like
The message contained only one sentence.
Your mother has lied to you about who your real father is.
