Chapter 2: The Account She Wasn't Supposed to Touch
At 9:03 p.m., I heard my father's car pull into the driveway.
I was standing near my bedroom window, watching the headlights sweep across the garage door.
He wasn't supposed to be home until the following afternoon.
Apparently, my voicemail had changed his plans.
I hurried downstairs.
Vanessa was in the living room, scrolling through her phone. Mia was curled up on the couch with her new MacBook balanced on her knees.
The television was playing some reality show.
Neither of them looked particularly concerned.
"Is Dad home?"" Mia asked without looking up.
"Yes.""
Vanessa glanced toward the hallway.
"Emily, go back upstairs. Your father has had a long day.""
The front door opened.
Daniel Carter walked in carrying a black leather briefcase.
His tie was loosened, and his expression was unusually serious.
He looked at me first.
"Sweetheart.""
I crossed the room and hugged him.
He held me tightly for a moment.
"Are you okay?""
I shook my head.
"No.""
He looked over my shoulder at Vanessa.
"Then I think we should all sit down.""
Vanessa gave a small laugh.
"Daniel, this is ridiculous. Emily is upset because she doesn't understand how family finances work.""
Dad put his briefcase on the coffee table.
"Is that what this is about?""
"Yes. She's making accusations because I helped Mia purchase a computer.""
"With whose money?""
Vanessa's lips tightened.
"Money from the family account.""
Dad slowly removed his watch.
"Which family account?""
"The household account. The one I manage.""
He looked at me.
"Emily, show me.""
I unlocked my phone and handed it to him.
He scrolled through the transaction history.
At first, his expression remained neutral.
Then his jaw tightened.
He opened the first withdrawal.
Then the second.
Then the third.
"Vanessa," he said quietly, "what are these transfers?""
She sighed.
"We've already discussed this.""
"Have we?""
"Emily has been acting entitled. I moved some money around to cover family expenses.""
Dad looked up.
"Which family expenses?""
Vanessa gestured toward Mia.
"Her computer. School supplies. A few things the household needed.""
"Two thousand three hundred and forty dollars?""
"It was sitting there.""
Dad stared at her.
"That money belonged to Emily.""
"She's sixteen, Daniel. She doesn't need thousands of dollars sitting in a savings account.""
"She earned it.""
"And we provide her with everything!""
Dad's voice became sharper.
"Providing a bedroom doesn't give you ownership of her paycheck.""
Mia closed her laptop.
"Can everyone stop fighting? I didn't know the money was hers.""
I looked at her.
"You literally said Mom told you.""
Mia's cheeks flushed.
"That's not what I meant.""
Dad held up one hand.
"Enough. I want to know exactly where the money went.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"I've already explained.""
"No, you've given me excuses.""
He placed my phone on the table and pulled out his own.
I watched him open the banking application he used for his company.
My father owned a commercial property management business with offices throughout North Texas. It wasn't a massive corporation, but it employed dozens of people and managed several large commercial properties.
He had spent fifteen years building it.
He was careful with money, especially business money.
Every major transfer required either his approval or documented authorization from someone with the appropriate financial permissions.
I had once watched him refuse to purchase a new office vehicle because the existing one could last another year.
That was why what happened next confused me.
Dad opened the corporate reserve account.
His thumb moved across the screen.
Then he stopped.
His face changed.
"Vanessa.""
She glanced at him.
"What?""
"Have you accessed my corporate reserve account?""
Her eyes flickered.
"Why would I do that?""
He turned the phone toward her.
"Because I'm looking at three transfers totaling $18,700.""
The room went silent.
Mia's laptop slowly slipped from her knees onto the couch.
"What?"" she whispered.
Dad stood.
"Seventeen thousand dollars was transferred to an external account. Another $1,700 was withdrawn through an authorized payment.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
Dad tapped the screen.
"These transfers were approved using your credentials.""
"I must have been hacked.""
"Interesting.""
He opened another screen.
"Because the security system recorded the device used for every transaction.""
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Then closed.
Dad continued.
"The first transfer happened on October 12. The second on October 19. The third on October 27.""
He looked directly at her.
"Would you like to explain why you were moving company reserves into an account I don't recognize?""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Daniel, you're making a mistake.""
"Then explain it.""
"I was handling some expenses.""
"Which expenses?""
She hesitated.
"Household expenses.""
Dad let out a short, humorless laugh.
"Eighteen thousand seven hundred dollars in household expenses?""
"Do you have any idea how expensive maintaining this family is?""
"Then why didn't you ask me?""
"Because you always question everything I spend!""
"Because it's my company!""
Vanessa stepped toward him.
"Your company? We're married, Daniel. Everything you have is ours.""
Dad stared at her.
"That doesn't mean you can transfer company money without authorization.""
Mia stood up.
"Mom, what's going on?""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"Go upstairs.""
"But—"
"NOW, Mia.""
Mia grabbed her laptop and hurried toward the staircase.
Dad waited until she disappeared.
Then he opened the transaction details again.
"There's something else.""
Vanessa looked exhausted.
"What now?""
Dad zoomed in on one of the transfers.
"The receiving account belongs to a company called Vantage Lifestyle Consulting.""
Vanessa went completely still.
I recognized the name.
I'd seen it on an envelope in the kitchen several months earlier. Vanessa had told me it was a business she was considering starting.
Dad looked at her.
"Why does my money end up in a company registered in your name?""
Vanessa's voice became defensive.
"I was investing.""
"Investing in what?""
"A business opportunity.""
"What business opportunity?""
She looked away.
Dad placed his phone on the table.
"Vanessa, I've spent fifteen years building that company. I have employees who depend on those reserves. You cannot treat the corporate account like your personal wallet.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
It was the first time I'd seen her look genuinely frightened.
But she quickly changed tactics.
"You're humiliating me in front of your daughter.""
Dad glanced at me.
"Emily is the person who was robbed. She deserves to know what's happening.""
Vanessa turned toward me.
"You must be very proud of yourself.""
I swallowed.
"I just wanted my money back.""
"You've destroyed this family over two thousand dollars.""
Dad stepped between us.
"No. She didn't destroy anything.""
He looked at Vanessa.
"You did.""
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Dad's phone rang.
He checked the caller ID.
It was his company's chief financial officer, Robert Hayes.
He answered immediately.
"Robert?""
I couldn't hear everything Robert said, but I could see my father's expression darkening.
"Yes, I see the transfers.""
A pause.
"No, I didn't authorize them.""
Another pause.
"Freeze the external payment permissions immediately.""
Vanessa's head snapped toward him.
"Daniel, don't you dare.""
He ignored her.
"Send me the complete authorization logs. And contact the bank's fraud department.""
Vanessa moved closer.
"You're overreacting!""
Dad raised one finger, asking her to wait.
Then Robert apparently said something that made him stop pacing.
"What do you mean the destination account received another payment today?""
Vanessa's face lost its color.
Dad looked at her.
"How much?""
He listened.
Then he closed his eyes.
"Forty-two thousand dollars?""
My stomach dropped.
Forty-two thousand?
That wasn't in the transaction history he'd shown us.
Dad thanked Robert and ended the call.
Vanessa immediately started talking.
"Daniel, listen to me. I can explain all of this.""
He looked at her.
"Apparently, you can explain quite a lot.""
She reached for his arm.
"I was trying to help us.""
He pulled away.
"Where did the additional forty-two thousand dollars go?""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"I didn't steal anything.""
"Then why is it missing?""
"I was going to put it back.""
"When?""
She looked toward the staircase.
Then toward the front door.
I noticed something strange.
She wasn't looking at Dad anymore.
She was looking at the small purse sitting on the entryway table.
Dad noticed too.
"Vanessa, don't move.""
But she had already taken a step toward it.
He moved between her and the door.
"You're not leaving until we understand what happened.""
She stared at him.
Then she said something that made my father go completely still.
"Daniel, you don't understand. That money wasn't for me.""
He narrowed his eyes.
"Who was it for?""
Vanessa swallowed.
Then she whispered a name.
"Michael.""
Dad's face changed.
I had never heard that name before.
But my father clearly had.
"Michael?"" he repeated.
Vanessa nodded.
"He said he could make everything right.""
Dad stared at her for several seconds.
May you like
Then he asked a question that seemed to terrify her more than all the others.
"Why would you send money to a man who hasn't been alive for six years?""
