Chapter 7: The Red Envelope

“Daniel, open the door.””

Brenda's voice sounded almost affectionate.

That was what frightened me most.

She was standing outside my sister's house with Mark beside her, holding a manila envelope as though she had brought us an invitation to dinner.

I looked at Melissa's message again.

My daughters had supposedly been removed from the family trust.

My house was listed as collateral on a loan I had never knowingly authorized.

And the woman who had arranged it all was standing three feet away from my front door.

“Don't open it,” Claire whispered.

“I won't.””

I called the police and explained that two people were attempting to pressure me into signing disputed legal documents. I told the dispatcher about the threats, the suspected financial fraud, and the recordings involving my children.

Meanwhile, Brenda continued knocking.

“Daniel, this is ridiculous. You're frightening the girls.””

I stepped closer to the door.

“You've done enough frightening them yourself.””

There was silence.

Then Mark spoke.

“Danny, we're trying to protect you. Don't let a family disagreement destroy everything we've built.””

I almost laughed.

“Everything we've built? You mean the company you used to submit a fraudulent loan application?””

Mark's voice changed.

“Watch what you say.””

“I have recordings, Mark.””

Another silence.

Brenda suddenly stepped closer to the door.

“Those recordings are meaningless. An eight-year-old doesn't understand what she's hearing.””

Ava, standing behind me, began to cry.

I turned and knelt beside her.

“Don't listen to her, sweetheart.””

“But she said I don't understand.””

I took her hands.

“You understood enough to tell the truth. That's what matters.””

The police arrived twelve minutes later.

Brenda immediately changed her expression.

She began crying before the officers even reached the porch.

“Officer, thank goodness you're here. My stepson has been behaving irrationally. I'm worried about the children.””

Mark stood behind her with his hands in his pockets.

I opened the door only after the officers identified themselves.

Brenda looked at me with exaggerated disappointment.

“Daniel, please. Let's not do this.””

One officer asked everyone to explain what had happened.

Brenda spoke first.

She described herself as a devoted grandmother figure who had been caring for two neglected children while their father worked constantly.

She claimed Nia had behavioral problems.

She said Ava was frightened of her older sister.

Then she held up the manila envelope.

“These are documents Daniel asked me to prepare. He's refusing to sign them because he's having a difficult emotional period.””

I looked at the officer.

“That's not true. I have evidence that she has been mistreating my daughter and arranging to remove her from my home without my consent.””

Brenda shook her head.

“Listen to him. He's making accusations because I tried to establish boundaries.””

Claire stepped forward.

“I've seen the children cry because of what you've done.””

Brenda pointed at her.

“You've never been involved in their daily care.””

“And you've been using their father's signature to steal from him,” Claire replied.

The officer raised his hand.

“Everyone, one at a time.””

I showed him the threatening message and explained the pending loan investigation.

He photographed the envelope Brenda was carrying.

Then he asked her to explain the guardianship documents.

She refused to discuss the details without legal advice.

The officers told everyone to remain calm and advised us to handle the custody and financial matters through the appropriate legal channels.

Brenda eventually walked back toward the SUV.

Before getting inside, she turned.

“You'll regret humiliating me, Daniel.””

I watched her leave.

Then Mark looked back at me.

“You really think you can do this without me?””

I didn't answer.

He climbed into the SUV.

Melissa arrived twenty minutes later.

She listened to everything and immediately contacted the bank's fraud department.

Then she asked about Rachel's journal.

I showed her the entry mentioning the red envelope.

She read it carefully.

“Daniel, we need to find this.””

“I've searched the attic and her desk.””

“Think about Rachel's habits. Where would she keep something important that she didn't want anyone else to find?””

I looked around the living room.

Rachel had always hidden meaningful things in ordinary places.

Birthday cards inside cookbooks.

Letters between the pages of old novels.

Photographs behind framed pictures.

Then I remembered something.

Her sewing box.

After she died, I had packed it away without opening most of its compartments.

I went to the storage closet and found the small wooden box beneath a stack of blankets.

Its brass hinges were tarnished.

Inside were needles, thread, buttons, and several pieces of fabric.

I lifted the removable tray.

Nothing.

Then I noticed that the bottom panel was slightly loose.

I pressed one corner.

It lifted.

Beneath it was a red envelope.

My hands trembled as I pulled it out.

Rachel's handwriting was on the front.

*For Daniel. Only if Brenda comes back into our children's lives.*

Melissa stared at the envelope.

“Open it.””

Inside were three documents.

The first was an old legal agreement involving Rachel's maternal grandmother.

The second was a copy of a family trust.

The third was a handwritten letter.

I unfolded the letter.

Daniel,

If you're reading this, Brenda has probably started asking questions about Nia. I hoped she would never come near our family again.

Years ago, before I met you, my grandmother established a trust for her first biological grandchild. It was intended to protect the child and provide for her education and future.

That child was me.

But after I discovered the original records, I learned something I never expected. The trust had been improperly altered years earlier, and Brenda was involved.

I stopped reading.

Melissa leaned forward.

“Keep going.””

Brenda was once married to a man who worked for my grandmother. She had access to the family records. When my grandmother discovered that money was missing, Brenda disappeared.

My grandmother eventually recovered most of the assets, but she placed strict conditions on the trust.

When I had a child, the trust would continue for that child.

I looked at the second document.

There was a section identifying the next beneficiary.

*Nia Rachel Carter.*

My daughter.

The trust contained considerably more money than I had imagined.

But the letter continued.

Brenda knows Nia is the beneficiary. She believes that if she can establish herself as Nia's legal guardian, she can gain influence over the trust.

She has no right to it.

I also need you to know that the original records identify another person who helped Brenda alter the documents.

I turned the page.

There was a name.

*Robert Ellison.*

Mark's father.

Melissa sat back.

“That's a serious discovery.””

I continued reading.

Daniel, I never told you because I wanted you to have a peaceful life. I thought Brenda had moved on.

But if she returns, don't trust anyone who tells you that Nia needs to be separated from Ava.

And whatever you do, don't let them obtain the original trust certificate.

I lowered the letter.

“Where is it?””

Melissa examined the documents.

“Is there anything else inside?””

I shook the envelope.

A small brass key fell onto the table.

It was attached to a paper tag.

*UNIT 214.*

I stared at it.

Rachel had owned a storage unit before we married.

I remembered helping her move boxes from it years ago, but I thought she'd canceled the rental after our wedding.

I called the storage facility.

The employee confirmed that Unit 214 had remained active under Rachel's name and was currently paid through an automatic account.

The facility was only twenty minutes away.

Melissa immediately arranged to accompany me the following morning.

But before we could leave, my phone rang.

It was Aunt Evelyn.

“Daniel, I found something.””

“What?””

“Brenda called me again. She said she wanted to apologize, but she accidentally told me something.””

I waited.

“She said Nia's trust wasn't the only thing Rachel left behind.””

My heart pounded.

“What else?””

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“Rachel left a sealed statement concerning Brenda's identity and her connection to your father.””

I looked at Melissa.

“What connection?””

May you like

Evelyn whispered:

“Daniel, I don't think Brenda ever told you the truth about why she married your father.””
