Chapter 4: The Name on the Recording

I replayed the recording three times.

Each time, the man's voice became more familiar.

Then I heard Brenda say his name.

“Don't worry, Mark. Daniel trusts you. That's why this will work.””

I stopped breathing.

Mark.

Mark Ellison.

My business partner.

My closest friend for almost eleven years.

The man who had stood beside me at Rachel's funeral. The man who had helped me rebuild my construction company when I couldn't even get out of bed after losing my wife.

The man who had held my daughters while they cried.

I looked at Melissa.

“Tell me that's not who I think it is.””

She didn't answer immediately.

“Do you recognize the voice?””

“It's Mark.””

Melissa replayed the final seconds.

The recording was unmistakable.

Mark said, “What about the loan documents?””

Brenda answered, “Daniel signed the authorization. Once Nia is placed with the alternate family, he'll be distracted enough not to question anything.””

“And the money?””

“Your portion will be ready when the guardianship arrangement is finalized.””

My hands went cold.

“What portion?””

Melissa paused the video.

“Daniel, I need you to understand something. We don't yet know whether these recordings show a completed financial arrangement or an attempted one. But if your signature has been used without proper authorization, this could be much bigger than a family dispute.””

I stared at the phone.

Mark had access to my company's accounts because we were business partners.

He knew my schedule.

He knew where I kept important documents.

He knew how much insurance I carried.

And he'd known exactly how to approach Brenda.

“Why would he do this?”” I whispered.

Melissa closed her briefcase.

“That's what we're going to find out.””

I called Mark.

He answered on the second ring.

“Danny! What's up, brother?””

His cheerful voice made me want to throw the phone against the wall.

“Can we meet?””

“Sure. Everything okay?””

“It's about the company.””

There was a short pause.

“Something wrong with the accounts?””

“I'd rather discuss it in person.””

“Come by tomorrow morning. I'll buy coffee.””

“No. Today.””

Another pause.

“Fine. Three o'clock?””

“Three.””

I hung up.

Melissa looked at me.

“Don't accuse him yet. We need records, not a confrontation that gives him time to destroy evidence.””

I nodded.

She contacted her office and arranged for a financial investigator to review the loan documents. She also advised me to secure my personal identification, change passwords, and notify the bank that my signature might have been misused.

Before leaving, she spoke to Nia and Ava separately.

Nia sat on the couch with her hands folded tightly in her lap.

“Sweetheart,” Melissa said gently, “has Brenda ever told you that you would be happier living somewhere else?””

Nia nodded.

“She said Aunt Evelyn had a bigger house and a swimming pool.””

“Did she tell you when you would go?””

“Friday.””

Melissa exchanged a glance with me.

“And did she tell you why?””

Nia looked down.

“She said Dad needed a break from me.””

I knelt in front of my daughter.

“Nia, there is nothing you could ever do that would make me want a break from being your father.””

She began crying.

“I know, Dad.””

But the way she said it told me she was still trying to believe it.

That afternoon, I took the girls to my sister's house.

Brenda believed they were staying with a school friend's family.

I didn't want her knowing where they were.

At three o'clock, I walked into Mark's office.

He was sitting behind his desk, wearing the expensive watch I'd given him for his fortieth birthday.

“There's my man!””

He stood and offered a handshake.

I didn't take it.

His smile faded.

“Everything all right?””

I placed a printed copy of the loan authorization on his desk.

“Have you seen this?””

He glanced at the page.

Then he looked at me.

“Where did you get that?””

“That's an interesting first question.””

He leaned back.

“Danny, if this is about the business loan, I told you we needed additional capital.””

“You told me we were refinancing equipment.””

“That's essentially what it is.””

“Then why is my personal property listed as collateral?””

Mark rubbed his chin.

“Because the bank needed additional security.””

“I never authorized that.””

“You signed the papers.””

I stared at him.

“Did I?””

He didn't answer.

I placed another sheet on the desk.

It was a photograph of Brenda's handwritten notes.

Mark looked at it.

His expression changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“From someone who knows what you're doing.””

He stood.

“Daniel, listen to me. Brenda is trying to help your family. She's been worried about you.””

“Stop saying my family's name.””

“I'm serious. You've been struggling since Rachel died.””

I stepped closer.

“Did you arrange for someone to collect my daughter on Friday?””

Mark's mouth opened slightly.

Then he laughed.

“Are you out of your mind?””

“Did you?””

“I'm not discussing your domestic problems.””

“Then let's discuss the money.””

He looked toward the glass wall of his office.

Two employees were walking past.

His voice dropped.

“Sit down. We can work this out.””

I remained standing.

“What did you promise Brenda?””

Mark's jaw tightened.

“She came to me with an opportunity.””

“What opportunity?””

“She said you were planning to restructure the family trust. She claimed you wanted someone else to handle Nia's care temporarily.””

“And you believed her?””

“She had documents with your signature.””

“Did you know those documents were being used to move my daughter?””

Mark looked away.

That was enough.

I walked toward the door.

“Daniel, wait.””

I stopped.

He lowered his voice.

“You need to understand something. Brenda didn't come to me because she wanted to hurt you. She said she was protecting Ava.””

I turned slowly.

“What does Ava have to do with this?””

Mark swallowed.

“Ask Brenda why she needed Nia gone first.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

But Mark had already picked up his phone.

“I think you should leave.””

I walked out without another word.

In the elevator, my phone rang.

It was Melissa.

“Daniel, we found something.””

“What?””

“The loan application lists a second beneficiary. Not your company. Not Brenda.””

“Who?””

“Mark Ellison's private investment company.””

I closed my eyes.

“How much?””

“Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars.””

The elevator doors opened.

I stepped into the parking garage.

Then Melissa added one more thing.

“There's also a clause attached to the loan. If the primary borrower becomes legally incapacitated, control of the collateral transfers to the designated representative.””

“Who's the representative?””

She hesitated.

“Your stepmother.””

I gripped the phone.

Brenda hadn't simply wanted my daughter out of the house.

She had positioned herself to control my finances if something happened to me.

I got into my car.

And as I started the engine, a text appeared from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Nia's blue suitcase.

Underneath it were six words.

*Friday is still happening. Don't interfere.*
