Chapter 7: The Daughter My Father Never Knew

For several seconds, my father couldn't speak.

He stood beside the dining table, staring at Vanessa as though the woman he had married had just confessed to being someone else entirely.

Then he said, very quietly, “You have one minute to explain what you just told us.””

Vanessa clutched the document against her chest.

“Don't threaten me, David.””

“I'm not threatening you. I'm asking you to explain why you're claiming my wife had another child.””

“Because she did.””

“Then give me a name.””

Vanessa glanced at me.

“Her name is Sophia.””

The name hung in the air.

I had never heard it before, yet something about Vanessa's expression made me feel as though I should have.

“Where is she?”” Dad demanded.

“I don't know where she is right now.””

Michael Bennett closed his briefcase with a sharp click.

“Mrs. Carter, if you intend to make a claim this serious, we need verifiable evidence. A document with a signature is not proof of parentage.””

Vanessa turned on him.

“You're an attorney. You should know better than to dismiss legal documents.””

“And you should know better than to present an unverified document as conclusive evidence.””

Her cheeks flushed.

Dad reached across the table.

“Let me see it.””

Vanessa hesitated before sliding the document toward him.

He studied the signature at the bottom.

I watched his face, hoping he would find something that exposed the lie immediately.

Instead, he whispered, “This looks like Margaret's handwriting.””

My stomach sank.

“But it could be forged,” Michael said.

“We need the original and independent verification.””

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

“Of course. You'd rather believe a conspiracy than accept that Margaret kept secrets from you.””

Dad looked up.

“Did she know about Sophia?””

“Yes.””

“Did she tell you about her?””

Vanessa hesitated.

That hesitation was the first honest thing I had seen from her all morning.

“She told me shortly before she died.””

“When?””

“Three weeks before her final hospitalization.””

Dad gripped the edge of the table.

“Why would Margaret tell you something like that and not tell me?””

“Because she knew you'd never accept it.””

“Accept what?””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“That the child was born before you married Margaret.””

Silence swallowed the room.

I looked at Dad.

He appeared stunned, but not angry. It was the expression of someone trying to rebuild an entire lifetime around a single unfamiliar fact.

Michael broke the silence.

“Do you have a birth certificate?””

Vanessa opened her folder and removed another sheet.

“This is a copy.””

Michael examined it.

“Where is the original?””

“I told you. I don't have it.””

“Then how did you obtain this copy?””

“Margaret gave it to me.””

Dad shook his head.

“No. She wouldn't have.””

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

“You don't know everything your wife did, David!””

The words struck him visibly.

She continued before he could answer.

“She kept things from you. She made decisions without consulting you. She had an entire part of her life you knew nothing about.””

I stepped forward.

“Why are you telling us this now?””

Vanessa turned toward me.

“Because you need to understand that you're not the only person who matters in this family.””

“I never said I was.””

“You've behaved as though you are. Your father pays your tuition, lets you live here, and gives you everything you ask for. Meanwhile, I have to think about what happens when he's gone.””

Dad's expression hardened.

“Is that what this is about? My estate?””

Vanessa looked away.

He repeated the question.

“Is this about my money?””

“It's about protecting our future!””

“By forcing my daughter out?””

“By making sure she understands that she cannot expect to inherit everything simply because she was born into this family!””

Her voice echoed through the dining room.

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael quietly picked up the document.

“I think we've heard enough for today.””

Vanessa snatched it from his hand.

“Don't touch that.””

Michael remained composed.

“David, I strongly recommend that you make no changes to your estate, sign no new agreements, and authorize no transfers until these documents have been independently examined.””

Dad nodded.

“Agreed.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You can't be serious.””

“I've never been more serious in my life.””

For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

Then her expression hardened into something uglier.

“Fine. If you want the truth, I'll give it to you.””

She turned toward me.

“Your mother didn't just hide a daughter. She hid the fact that the child was connected to a man who later became very important to this family.””

Michael frowned.

“What man?””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“Richard Cole.””

Dad went rigid.

Richard was the attorney scheduled to meet us that morning. The same man connected to the suspicious $85,000 transfer.

“What are you saying?”” Dad asked.

Vanessa placed the document on the table.

“I'm saying Margaret had a relationship with Richard before she married you.””

My father took a step backward.

“No.””

“She had a child with him.””

“No.””

“And when she discovered she was pregnant, she made arrangements to keep the child away from him.””

Dad's face had gone completely white.

I wanted to believe Vanessa was lying. I wanted to grab the document, tear it into pieces, and throw her out of the house.

But the fear in her eyes had changed.

She wasn't simply trying to provoke us anymore.

She was desperate to make us believe something.

Michael stepped between Vanessa and Dad.

“That's enough. If you have evidence, provide it through the proper channels.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Evidence? You want evidence?””

She pulled out her phone and opened a photograph.

It showed my mother standing outside a hospital, holding a newborn wrapped in a white blanket.

Beside her stood Richard Cole.

My father stared at the photograph.

I felt the room tilt around me.

“That could be anyone,” Michael said.

Vanessa zoomed in.

“Look at the date.””

Dad took the phone.

His hand shook as he read the timestamp.

It was from nearly thirty years earlier.

Long before I was born.

He stared at the photograph for so long that I thought he might collapse.

Finally, he handed the phone back.

“Where is Sophia?””

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“She's coming here.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

Dad looked at her sharply.

“You arranged a meeting with her without telling me?””

“I wanted you to see the truth for yourself.””

“No. You wanted to control the moment I learned about it.””

For the first time, Vanessa had no immediate answer.

Then Dad turned to Michael.

“I want that photograph authenticated. I want the birth certificate verified. And I want a complete investigation into every financial document connected to Richard Cole.””

Michael nodded.

“I'll begin immediately.””

Vanessa grabbed her folder.

“Do whatever you want. But don't blame me when you discover Margaret wasn't the woman you thought she was.””

She marched toward the front door.

Before leaving, she turned to me.

“You should be grateful I asked for two thousand dollars instead of asking you to leave immediately.””

I met her gaze.

“You should be grateful Dad hasn't called the police.””

Her smile vanished.

Then she stormed out.

The front door slammed so hard that the hallway mirror rattled.

Dad sank into the nearest chair.

I sat beside him.

“Dad?””

He looked at me, and for the first time since I was a little girl, I saw tears running freely down his face.

“What if it's true?”” he whispered.

I took his hand.

“Then we'll find out what happened.””

He stared at the photograph on the table.

“Your mother never told me.””

I wanted to comfort him, but I couldn't ignore the question burning inside me.

If Vanessa had known about Sophia for years, why had she waited until now to reveal her?

And why had she tied the secret to a demand for money and forged financial documents?

Michael gathered the papers.

“There's one more thing I need you both to understand. Even if Sophia exists, that doesn't automatically validate Vanessa's financial claims. We must investigate those matters separately.””

Dad nodded slowly.

“Find out who she is.””

Michael left to make his calls.

Dad remained at the table, staring at the photograph.

Then my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

I'm Sophia. Your stepmother told me everything.

A second message appeared.

But she lied about why I'm coming tonight.

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

May you like

I'm not coming for the money.

I'm coming because I know what really happened to your mother.
