Chapter 3: The Camera That Heard Everything

The teddy bear had been sitting on my shelf for four years.

Its brown fur was worn thin around the paws, one black button eye had been replaced with a slightly smaller one, and a faded blue ribbon circled its neck.

Dad had given it to me after my sixteenth birthday dinner.

My mother had been gone for six months, and I had spent that birthday pretending I didn't care that half the chairs at the table were empty.

After everyone left, Dad came into my room carrying the bear.

“Your mom found this at a little shop downtown before she got sick,” he had told me.

“She wanted to give it to you when you turned sixteen.””

I remembered hugging him so tightly that he laughed.

For years, I had slept with the bear beside my pillow.

Then Vanessa moved into the house.

She called it childish, but whenever I tried to put it in a box, she insisted I leave it where it was.

Now I sat on my bed, turning the bear over in my hands.

The unknown number had sent another message.

Look beneath the ribbon. There's a small seam.

My fingers trembled as I loosened the blue ribbon.

There, beneath its faded knot, was a tiny stitch that didn't match the rest of the stitching.

I pressed against it.

Something clicked.

I froze.

Then I pressed again.

A small plastic panel shifted beneath the fabric.

My heart began pounding.

I carefully opened the seam just enough to see a black object nestled inside the stuffing. It was smaller than a coin, with a tiny lens and a pinhole beside it.

A camera.

I stared at it, unable to breathe.

Another message arrived.

It records audio and video. Your father installed it months ago after money disappeared from his office. He never told Vanessa.

I read the message twice.

Dad had installed a camera?

Why hadn't he told me?

And who was sending these messages?

I typed a reply.

Who are you?

The response came almost immediately.

Someone who knows what she's planning.

Before I could ask anything else, footsteps sounded on the stairs.

I shoved the bear beneath my pillow and stood.

Dad knocked twice.

“Emily? Can I come in?””

I wiped my face.

“Yes.””

He opened the door and stepped inside, closing it behind him.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

He looked at the framed photograph on my desk, then at the broken expression I knew was still visible on my face.

Finally, he pulled the desk chair closer to the bed.

“Sit down, sweetheart.””

I remained standing.

“Am I in trouble?””

His face tightened.

“No.””

“Then why did you ask me to come downstairs?””

He exhaled slowly.

“Vanessa and I have been discussing the household finances. I need to understand what's happening.””

I looked at him in disbelief.

“Dad, she hit me.””

“I know you said that.””

“She demanded two thousand dollars from me.””

“I saw the paper.””

“Then why are we discussing finances instead of what she did?””

He lowered his eyes.

That hurt more than I expected.

“I don't want to dismiss what happened,” he said.

“But I need to understand the full situation before I make any decisions.””

I sat on the edge of the bed.

“What decision?””

He hesitated.

“Vanessa wants you to move out.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“And you agree?””

“No. I haven't agreed to anything.””

“But you're considering it.””

He didn't deny it.

I looked down at my hands.

“Dad, if Mom were alive, would you let someone treat me like this?””

His expression crumpled.

“Don't do that.””

“Do what?””

“Bring your mother into this.””

“Why? Because she would know I'm telling the truth?””

He stood abruptly and walked toward the window.

For a moment, I thought he was angry.

Then I saw his hands.

They were shaking.

“I am trying to keep this family together,” he said.

I swallowed.

“Then why does it feel like I'm the only one you expect to sacrifice?””

He turned toward me.

“I never wanted you to feel that way.””

“But I do.””

The silence stretched between us.

Then Dad looked at the teddy bear protruding slightly from beneath my pillow.

His expression changed.

“Why is that out?””

I froze.

“What?””

“The bear. I thought you kept it on the shelf.””

I followed his gaze.

He stepped closer.

“Emily, where did you get that?””

“You gave it to me.””

“I know that.”” He looked at the bear, then at me.

“Have you opened it?””

I didn't answer.

He went completely still.

“Emily.””

I reached beneath the pillow and carefully lifted the bear.

“I found something inside.””

Dad's face drained of color.

He held out his hand.

“Let me see.””

I placed the bear in his palm.

He examined the seam beneath the ribbon, then gently pressed the hidden panel.

A tiny light blinked once.

Dad closed his eyes.

“Oh, God.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

He sat down heavily on the edge of the desk.

“Not about the bear. I knew someone had been taking things from my office, and I suspected Vanessa might be involved. I installed a security system in the hallway and study.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I wasn't sure what I would find.””

He turned the bear over.

“This camera is different. I didn't install this one.””

My stomach twisted.

“Then who did?””

Dad looked at me.

“I don't know.””

The room seemed to shrink around us.

The camera wasn't just a witness to Vanessa's attack.

Someone had placed it inside a gift connected to my mother.

Someone had wanted the truth recorded.

And that person might have been watching us for longer than either of us realized.

Dad reached into his pocket and took out his phone.

“I'm calling the security company.””

“Wait.””

He paused.

I showed him the messages.

His expression grew darker with every line.

When he reached the final message, he looked up sharply.

“Who sent these?””

“I don't know. They won't tell me.””

He studied the number.

Then he called it.

The phone rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

Someone answered.

Dad put the call on speaker.

“Who is this?”” he demanded.

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a woman's voice spoke.

“David, you need to listen carefully. Vanessa isn't asking Emily to leave because she dislikes her.””

Dad tightened his grip on the phone.

“Who are you?””

“You know me.””

He frowned.

“No, I don't.””

The woman let out a shaky breath.

“My name is Rachel. I used to work for Vanessa.””

Dad went pale.

Rachel had been Vanessa's personal assistant until six months earlier. I remembered seeing her at the house twice, always carrying a laptop and avoiding eye contact whenever Vanessa entered the room.

Dad had told me she had moved away.

“What do you want?”” he asked.

“To stop her from doing to Emily what she did to someone else.””

My throat tightened.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Rachel paused.

Then she said, “Vanessa has been telling people that the house belongs to her. She's been preparing documents to make sure Emily can't challenge her.””

Dad stood.

“What documents?””

“The same ones she tried to get me to sign before I quit. She claims she's entitled to control the property if you become unable to manage your affairs.””

Dad stared at the floor.

“That is impossible. The house is in my name.””

“I know,” Rachel replied.

“But she has copies of your signature, and she's been working with someone who can make the paperwork look legitimate.””

I felt sick.

Dad's voice dropped.

“Why didn't you come to me sooner?””

“Because I was afraid of her. She threatened to ruin my career and accuse me of stealing from the company. I thought leaving would be enough.””

“And now?””

“Now she's moving faster. I heard her tell someone she needed Emily out before you reviewed the documents.””

Dad's eyes met mine.

For the first time that night, I saw no doubt in them.

Only anger.

“Where are you?”” he asked.

“Somewhere safe. I have copies of the paperwork and messages between Vanessa and the attorney she's been using.””

“Can you send them to me?””

“Yes. But there's something else.””

Dad went rigid.

“What?””

Rachel's voice trembled.

“The camera inside the teddy bear wasn't installed by Vanessa.””

I looked at the bear.

“Then who put it there?”” I whispered.

Rachel didn't answer immediately.

When she finally spoke, her words made my blood run cold.

“Your mother arranged it before she died. She was afraid Vanessa would eventually try to take the house away from you.””

Dad's face crumpled.

“No,” he whispered.

Rachel continued.

“She left a recording with instructions. I was supposed to give it to you if Vanessa ever tried to force Emily out.””

Dad gripped the edge of the desk.

“Where is it?””

“In a safe deposit box. Your wife doesn't know it exists.””

I could barely speak.

“My mother knew?””

“She suspected Vanessa wasn't who she claimed to be,” Rachel said.

“But she didn't have enough evidence before she died.””

Dad looked at me, his eyes shining.

Then his phone vibrated.

A new email had arrived.

The sender was Rachel.

The subject line read:

*YOUR WIFE'S PLAN — READ BEFORE YOU CONFRONT HER.*

Dad opened the attachment.

His face changed with every line.

Finally, he turned the screen toward me.

At the bottom of the document was a signature.

David Carter.

It looked exactly like my father's handwriting.

Except Dad had never signed it.

And beneath his forged signature was a clause that could give Vanessa control over the house, the bank accounts, and nearly everything he owned.

Dad slowly lifted his eyes toward the bedroom door.

Downstairs, we heard Vanessa laughing on the phone.

Then she said a name that made my father go completely still.

“Don't worry,” she told the person on the other end.

“Once David signs the final papers tomorrow, Emily will have no claim to anything.””

Dad closed the email.

His voice was barely audible.

“Tomorrow?””

He looked at me, then at the teddy bear.

“Emily, we need to find out exactly what your mother left behind.””

Because if Rachel was telling the truth, the woman who had just demanded two thousand dollars from me wasn't merely trying to throw me out of my home.

May you like

She was trying to take everything my father owned.

And tomorrow, she intended to make it legal.
