Chapter 9: The Truth Angela Hid in Her Final Letter
Samuel Brooks agreed to meet us at his office the following morning.
He was a retired attorney in his early sixties who had handled Angela's estate planning for several years.
He greeted me with a firm handshake.
"Mr. Reed. I'm sorry we have to meet under these circumstances.""
I sat down.
"Did you know Denise Carter?""
He nodded.
"Unfortunately.""
"Why?""
Samuel removed a thick folder from his cabinet.
"Because Angela contacted me shortly before her death. She was concerned about unauthorized changes to her financial arrangements.""
He placed several documents on the desk.
"The original trust agreement named you as Malik's guardian and me as the independent trustee.""
I looked at him.
"Why didn't I know?""
"Angela wanted to keep the financial details private until the arrangements were complete. She was concerned that Denise had begun asking questions about the money.""
I stared at the documents.
"How much was in the trust?""
"Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars initially. Additional investments increased its value.""
"And who could access it?""
"Nobody could withdraw funds without the trustee's authorization.""
I looked up.
"Then how did the money disappear?""
Samuel turned another page.
"Someone submitted a document claiming that Angela had revoked the trust and transferred authority to a private company.""
"Was it genuine?""
"No.""
His answer was immediate.
I leaned forward.
"How do you know?""
"Because I received a separate letter from Angela three days before she died, confirming that the trust remained in place. She also requested that I notify you if anyone attempted to alter it.""
He opened another folder.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
My name was written across the front.
The handwriting was Angela's.
I recognized it immediately.
Samuel pushed it toward me.
"She asked me to give you this only if the trust became compromised or if Denise attempted to obtain control of Malik's assets.""
I stared at the envelope.
"Why didn't you contact me earlier?""
"Because there was no verified reason to believe the trust had been compromised until recently. The first suspicious transfer appeared in records we obtained last month.""
I opened the envelope.
The letter was several pages long.
The first paragraph made my eyes sting.
My Marcus,
If Samuel is giving you this letter, then the thing I feared has happened. I wish I could be there to explain it myself.
I stopped reading.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
Then I continued.
I need you to understand something. Denise was once my friend. I trusted her with my financial records because she told me she wanted to help.
When I discovered money missing, I confronted her. She apologized and said she had made a mistake. I believed her because I wanted to believe the best about someone I loved.
But she didn't stop.
I wiped my eyes.
She began asking about Malik's inheritance. She wanted to know what would happen if you remarried. She wanted to know whether a new spouse could become his legal guardian.
I looked up.
Samuel nodded.
"That's consistent with the earlier correspondence.""
I continued.
I was afraid, Marcus. Not because I thought you would hurt Malik. I was afraid someone would use your grief to make decisions for you.
You are a good father. But when I'm gone, you will be lonely. You will want someone to help you. Please don't confuse being loved with being protected.
My hands shook.
The next paragraph was even worse.
*There is something I never told you about Denise. She has a daughter named Kayla. Kayla was present when Denise first tried to change the trust documents.
She saw what happened. I don't believe Kayla understands everything, but she knows more than Denise thinks.*
I looked at Samuel.
"Angela knew Kayla?""
"Apparently.""
I returned to the letter.
I asked Robert to investigate Denise's actions. He discovered that she had been working with Peter Collins, who knew you through your job. They wanted access to information about your finances and your schedule.
I don't know how far their plan goes. But I know this: Malik must never be blamed for what adults choose to do.
The letter continued.
If Denise ever accuses Malik of hurting Kayla, please investigate carefully. I am worried she may use the children against each other.
I stopped reading.
My lawyer, sitting beside me, looked at the page.
"That's significant.""
I nodded.
The next section was dated three days before Angela died.
There is one final thing I need you to know.
I swallowed.
The night Denise visited me in the hospital, she told me she could make sure you never saw Malik again.
My chest tightened.
She said she knew people who could help her prove you were an unfit father if I exposed what she had done.
I felt sick.
I told her she would never get near my son again.
The final paragraph was short.
Marcus, if you are reading this, please don't waste your life hating her. Protect Malik. Find out what happened to the money. And remember that the children are not responsible for the choices their parents make.
At the bottom was one final sentence.
I love you. I always have.
I put the letter down.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then Samuel opened another file.
"There's something else.""
I looked up.
He showed us an original amendment signed by Angela three days before her death.
It named Robert Hayes as the alternate trustee.
It also included a provision stating that if any unauthorized attempt was made to transfer funds, the trust would be frozen pending investigation.
"That's why the money transfers were made through the private company," my lawyer said.
Samuel nodded.
"They attempted to bypass the trust structure.""
"Can the money be recovered?""
"Some of it may be. We've already identified two accounts that appear connected to the transfers.""
I looked at the papers.
"Then what happens next?""
"An independent investigation. The relevant authorities will determine whether criminal conduct occurred.""
I nodded.
But one question remained.
"Why did Denise accuse Malik of hurting Kayla?""
Samuel looked at me.
"Possibly because she needed to discredit him before he could reveal what he witnessed.""
My lawyer added, "We should also investigate whether the allegations were connected to the financial dispute. But we need evidence before drawing conclusions.""
I agreed.
As we gathered the documents, Samuel handed me a small sealed packet.
"Angela left this separately. She said it was for Malik.""
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Angela and Malik at the beach.
On the back, she'd written:
For my brave boy. You never have to earn love.
I closed my eyes.
That afternoon, I returned to Daniel's house.
Malik was sitting on the floor with his basketball.
I sat beside him.
"I found something from your mom.""
He looked up.
"What?""
I showed him the photograph.
He took it carefully.
For a moment, he just stared.
Then he pressed it against his chest.
"She knew, didn't she?""
I nodded.
"She knew Denise was doing things she shouldn't have been doing.""
Malik's eyes filled.
"Did she know Denise would hurt me?""
I swallowed.
"She was worried about you. She tried to protect you.""
He looked down.
"Why didn't you listen to her?""
The question hit harder than any accusation Denise had made.
I didn't defend myself.
"Because I didn't understand. And because I trusted the wrong person.""
Malik was quiet.
Then he asked:
"Are you going to leave her?""
I looked at him.
"Your safety comes first. Your mom's money and the investigation are being handled properly. Denise won't be making decisions about you.""
He nodded.
After a moment, he leaned against my shoulder.
I held him.
Then he whispered:
"Can we go see Mom's grave tomorrow?""
"Of course.""
That evening, my lawyer called with an update.
The financial examiner had discovered that one of the transfers from Malik's trust had gone into an account belonging to a company registered under a different name.
The company had been dissolved shortly after Angela's funeral.
Its listed director was Peter Collins.
But the bank records showed something else.
A second person had authorized the account.
Someone whose name I knew.
Someone who had attended Angela's funeral.
Someone who had hugged me afterward and promised to help me raise Malik.
I asked my lawyer to read the name again.
He did.
"Your late wife's brother, Robert Hayes.""
I froze.
"That can't be right.""
"I'm telling you what the records show. We need to determine whether his identity was used without authorization or whether he participated.""
I hung up.
I called Robert immediately.
No answer.
I tried again.
Still nothing.
Then a message arrived.
*I know you've seen the transfer records. There's something I need to explain. I never stole Angela's money. But I did sign one document, and I did it because she asked me to.*
I stared at the screen.
A second message followed.
*If you want the truth, come to the old house tomorrow. Bring Malik's necklace.*
I looked at Angela's silver necklace on the table.
Then I noticed a tiny inscription inside the clasp.
I had never seen it before.
Four numbers.
0814.
The date Malik had described.
August 14.
The night he saw Denise, Kayla, and Peter in the garage.
I turned the necklace over.
A small compartment had been hidden inside the pendant.
And tucked inside it was a miniature photograph.
It showed Angela standing beside Robert.
Behind them was a hospital room.
And sitting in the bed, holding a newborn baby, was Denise.
I stared at the picture.
The date printed beneath it was fifteen years earlier.
My phone rang.
Robert.
I answered.
His first words made my blood run cold.
"Marcus, before you accuse me of stealing anything, you need to know that Denise isn't just the woman Angela warned you about.""
I gripped the phone.
"What do you mean?""
Robert took a long breath.
"She's the person who helped Angela hide the truth about Kayla's birth.""
I looked at the photograph again.
Then Robert continued.
"Because Kayla isn't the daughter Denise has been telling everyone she is.""
And suddenly, I understood why Angela's final letter had warned me that the children were not responsible for the choices their parents made.
The secret wasn't only about money.
May you like
It was about blood.
And Malik was about to discover that the family he'd been living with had been built on a lie.
