Chapter 2: The Boy Who Stopped Asking for Help

I didn't sleep that night.

Denise did.

At least, she appeared to.

She lay beside me with her back turned, breathing steadily, while I stared at the ceiling and replayed every conversation I'd had with Malik over the past year.

Every time he'd said he wasn't hungry.

Every time he'd asked whether I could pick him up from school instead of letting Denise drive.

Every time he'd gone silent when I entered the room.

I had mistaken his silence for teenage attitude.

I had mistaken his fear for grief.

And I had mistaken Denise's confidence for honesty.

At 5:42 a.m., I got out of bed.

I went downstairs and made coffee.

Then I opened the kitchen drawer where Denise kept the household medication, batteries, and miscellaneous papers.

I wasn't looking for anything specific.

I just needed to understand what kind of home I'd been living in.

Inside a folder marked SCHOOL were several printed emails.

Most concerned Kayla's grades and upcoming activities.

But one email caught my attention.

It was from Kayla's former teacher.

The subject line read:

*Concern Regarding Repeated Incidents Between Kayla and Malik.*

I opened it.

The message was dated four months earlier.

The teacher had written that Kayla and Malik had been involved in several disagreements at school.

She requested a meeting with both parents.

At the bottom, Denise had replied:

Thank you for letting me know. I'll handle this privately. Please do not contact Marcus about this matter. He's dealing with enough already.

I read it twice.

Then I heard footsteps.

Denise stood in the doorway wearing her robe.

"What are you doing?""

I turned the laptop toward her.

"Why didn't you tell me about this?""

She glanced at the email.

"Because it was nothing.""

"A teacher wanted a meeting about my son.""

"About your son bullying my daughter.""

"Why wasn't I included?""

"Because I knew how you'd react.""

I closed the laptop.

"Denise, he's my child.""

"And Kayla is mine!""

Her voice echoed through the kitchen.

She walked closer.

"Do you know what it's like watching your daughter come home crying because a boy in her own house keeps making her uncomfortable?""

I stared at her.

"Then tell me exactly what happened.""

Denise folded her arms.

"Malik has been entering Kayla's room without permission. He takes her things. He makes comments about her clothes. He follows her around when she wants to be alone.""

"Did you witness any of this?""

"I don't need to witness everything to believe my daughter.""

"And you think I don't believe her?""

"I think you only believe what makes your life easier.""

That accusation hit a nerve.

I had spent two years trying to keep our family together.

Working overtime.

Paying bills.

Attending school meetings.

Making sure both children had what they needed.

But perhaps I'd been so focused on keeping the family intact that I hadn't noticed the cracks spreading underneath us.

I took a breath.

"From now on, nobody handles problems with Malik without telling me.""

Denise laughed bitterly.

"Good luck with that.""

Then she walked away.

At seven, I knocked on Malik's door.

"Buddy, can I come in?""

A long pause.

Then the lock clicked.

He was sitting on his bed, fully dressed, with his backpack beside him.

His eyes were swollen.

"Hey," I said.

"Hey.""

I sat beside him.

"Your school counselor showed me the pictures.""

His shoulders tightened.

I noticed it immediately.

"Malik, I need you to tell me how you got those bruises.""

He stared at his hands.

"I fell.""

"Son.""

"I fell.""

"Did Denise hurt you?""

His breathing changed.

He looked at the door.

Then back at me.

"Are you mad?""

"No.""

"Because she said you'd be mad.""

I swallowed.

"Who said?""

"Denise.""

I moved closer.

"What did she say?""

Malik rubbed his thumb against the edge of his sweatshirt.

"She said you finally had someone who wanted to be with you, and if I kept causing problems, you'd lose her.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"Malik, look at me.""

He did.

"You are never going to lose me because you tell me the truth.""

His eyes filled.

"Promise?""

"I promise.""

He looked down again.

For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the heating vent.

Then he whispered, "She grabbed me.""

"Where?""

"My arm.""

"Why?""

"Because I wouldn't give Kayla my phone.""

I frowned.

"Why did she want your phone?""

"She said Kayla needed to check something.""

"What?""

Malik shook his head.

"I don't know.""

"Then what happened?""

"She pulled me into the laundry room. She said I was being disrespectful. I tried to leave, and she grabbed harder.""

He pushed up his sleeve.

There were faint marks near his wrist.

I felt sick.

"How many times?""

He shrugged.

"More than once.""

I closed my eyes.

"And the food?""

His face changed.

"Sometimes she says I can't eat dinner if I make Kayla upset.""

"How often?""

"I don't know.""

"Malik.""

"Sometimes I eat cereal after everyone goes upstairs.""

I looked at him.

A thirteen-year-old boy shouldn't have to sneak food in his own house.

I reached for his shoulder, then stopped.

"Can I hug you?""

He nodded.

I wrapped my arms around him.

At first, he stayed stiff.

Then he broke.

He cried into my shirt, trying desperately to keep the sound quiet.

"I'm sorry, Dad.""

I held him tighter.

"Don't apologize.""

"I didn't want you to lose Denise.""

I closed my eyes.

"That's not your responsibility.""

For the first time in months, Malik let himself cry without looking toward the door.

When he finally calmed down, I asked about Kayla.

His expression became guarded again.

"She hates me.""

"Why?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you ever threaten her?""

"No.""

"Did you ever touch her in a way that made her uncomfortable?""

His head snapped up.

"No, Dad!""

"Okay. I'm asking because I need to understand everything.""

He looked horrified.

"She told Denise I did something?""

I didn't answer immediately.

Malik stood.

"She told her, didn't she?""

"Your stepmother says there have been problems.""

Malik shook his head.

"That's not what happened.""

"What happened?""

He opened his mouth.

Then footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Denise appeared in the doorway.

"Why is he still in here? He's going to be late.""

I stood.

"He's staying home today.""

Denise frowned.

"Excuse me?""

"I'm taking him to speak with his counselor.""

Her face hardened.

"You're letting a thirteen-year-old dictate your marriage?""

"I'm protecting my son.""

She looked at Malik.

"See? This is what happens when you lie.""

I stepped between them.

"Don't speak to him like that.""

Denise stared at me for a long moment.

Then she turned and walked downstairs.

I helped Malik pack a small bag.

We would stay at my brother Daniel's house while I figured out the next steps.

But before we left, I needed to collect his medication and school documents.

I went to the kitchen.

Denise was standing beside the counter, holding her phone.

"Where are you taking him?""

"To Daniel's.""

"You're making a huge mistake.""

"Maybe. But I'm not leaving him here.""

She placed her phone down.

"You haven't heard my side.""

"I've heard enough to know I need to protect my son while we figure this out.""

She stepped closer.

"Marcus, you need to understand something. Kayla has been terrified of him.""

I stopped.

"Then we'll speak to the school and find out what happened.""

Denise shook her head.

"You don't understand. It's worse than you think.""

"Then explain it.""

She took a shaky breath.

"Two weeks ago, I found Kayla crying in her bedroom. She told me Malik had been threatening her. She said he told her that if she ever told you what happened between them, he'd make sure nobody believed her.""

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

"What happened between them?""

Denise looked toward the staircase.

Then she lowered her voice.

"Something happened last summer, Marcus. Something I should have told you.""

"What?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Kayla says Malik came into her room one night and—"

A door slammed upstairs.

We both turned.

Malik was standing at the top of the stairs.

His face had gone completely white.

"She's lying," he said.

Denise immediately covered her mouth.

"Malik, don't.""

He came down two steps.

"Tell him the whole story.""

I looked between them.

"Which story?""

Malik pointed at Denise.

"The one about the night she left me alone with Kayla.""

Denise's expression changed.

And suddenly, I understood that I wasn't dealing with a simple disagreement between two children.

May you like

Someone had been building a story inside my house.

And I had no idea who was telling the truth.
