Chapter 9: The Name on the Receipt

“Who?””
Daniel's voice was barely above a whisper.
Marcus stared at the photograph.
“Grandfather.””
Evelyn's face went white.
“My father?””
Marcus nodded.
“Your father paid for the bridal suite.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Grandpa has been dead for twelve years.””
“Exactly.””
Marcus turned the photograph over again.
“I remember seeing that name on the wedding arrangements.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“That isn't possible.””
Marcus walked toward the desk.
“The reservation wasn't under my name.””
He pulled out his phone.
“It was under a family account.””
Daniel stared.
“Whose account?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Grandfather's.””
Aaliyah began crying.
“I didn't know.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“You knew something.””
“I knew the suite was paid for.””
“By whom?””
“I was told it was a wedding gift.””
Vivian suddenly laughed.
“You really are all fools.””
Richard looked at her.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Vivian's eyes moved to Marcus.
“You want to know who paid for everything?””
Marcus stared.
“Tell me.””
Vivian smiled.
“Your grandfather didn't.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Then who?””
Vivian pointed toward Daniel's father.
“Him.””
Everyone turned.
Daniel's father closed his eyes.
Marcus whispered:
“Dad?””
“I paid for the suite.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew someone was going to use it.””
Daniel frowned.
“You knew about Aaliyah?””
His father shook his head.
“I knew someone was targeting Marcus.””
Marcus stared.
“How?””
“Because I received a letter three months ago.””
“From whom?””
His father looked toward Vivian.
“Her.””
Vivian's smile disappeared.
“She told me someone had been planning to destroy my family.””
Daniel's voice sharpened.
“Why didn't you tell us?””
“Because I didn't know who I could trust.””
Richard scoffed.
“So you trusted Vivian?””
“No.””
His father looked at him.
“I trusted the evidence.””
He pointed toward the red folder.
“Everything is in there.””
Daniel opened it again.
Bank transfers.
Phone records.
Hotel payments.
Aaliyah's communications.
But one document stood out.
A wire transfer.
$250,000.
Recipient: *Thomas Hale.*
Date: two days before the wedding.
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“Thomas was paid.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I didn't know.””
Marcus looked at Aaliyah.
“Did you?””
Aaliyah's face crumpled.
“Yes.””
Daniel stared.
“How much were you paid?””
“Fifty thousand.””
Marcus looked sick.
“You were paid to marry me?””
“No.””
She wiped her tears.
“I was paid to leave you.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Then why stay?””
“Because I fell in love with you.””
Daniel looked away.
Aaliyah continued.
“I wanted to stop.””
Vivian shouted:
“You were never supposed to stop!””
Aaliyah flinched.
Marcus turned toward Vivian.
“Who else was involved?””
Vivian said nothing.
Daniel held up the bank record.
“Thomas received $250,000.””
He flipped another page.
“Richard received $400,000.””
Richard stiffened.
“That money was a loan.””
“Then why did you hide it?””
Richard had no answer.
Daniel turned another page.
Then stopped.
His eyes widened.
“What?””
Marcus looked over his shoulder.
Another payment.
$1.2 million.
Recipient:
*EVELYN MOORE.*
Evelyn stared.
“That isn't mine.””
Daniel looked at her.
“It's your account.””
“I never received that money.””
Marcus checked the transaction date.
“Twenty-three years ago.””
Evelyn's face went blank.
“That was the week your father died.””
Daniel looked at his father.
“Did you send it?””
His father shook his head.
“I didn't.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Then someone used her account.””
Evelyn suddenly remembered.
“Thomas.””
Everyone looked at her.
“Thomas had access to my accounts.””
Daniel whispered:
“So he could make it look like Mom was paid.””
His father nodded.
“To frame her.””
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“That was the whole plan.””
Marcus stared at the documents.
“They wanted everyone to believe Mom killed Dad for money.””
“Yes,” his father said.
“And the wedding?””
His father looked toward Aaliyah.
“A second version of the same plan.””
Daniel understood.
“Make Marcus believe Mom attacked Aaliyah.””
“And once he cut Evelyn off,” his father continued, “the trust would become vulnerable.””
Richard suddenly spoke.
“Not vulnerable.””
Everyone looked at him.
“Accessible.””
Daniel frowned.
“To whom?””
Richard pointed at the bank records.
“The trust wasn't designed to pass to the family automatically.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Then what happens?””
“Control goes to the person holding the original authorization.””
Daniel stared.
“Who has it?””
Richard looked at Evelyn.
She shook her head.
“I don't.””
Daniel looked at his father.
His father whispered:
“Thomas.””
Marcus's face hardened.
“Thomas is dead.””
Richard smiled bitterly.
“No.””
Daniel stared.
“He isn't.””
Richard shook his head.
“Thomas disappeared six months after your father's supposed death.””
Evelyn whispered:
“We searched for him.””
“You searched for the wrong man.””
Richard pulled out his phone.
He opened an old photograph.
A man stood beside a woman.
Older.
Gray-haired.
But recognizable.
Daniel stared.
“Thomas.””
Marcus looked at the woman beside him.
His face suddenly changed.
“No.””
Evelyn took the phone.
The woman was Aaliyah's mother.
Marcus whispered:
“They're together.””
Aaliyah stared at the photograph.
“My mother?””
Vivian laughed.
“She wasn't just together with him.””
Everyone turned.
Vivian's voice became cold.
“She helped plan everything.””
Aaliyah collapsed into a chair.
“No…”
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew?””
“I didn't!””
Vivian stepped closer.
“Your mother met Thomas twenty-three years ago.””
Aaliyah shook her head.
“My mother told me my father abandoned us.””
Vivian smiled.
“He didn't.””
Daniel's father suddenly spoke.
“Her father was Thomas.””
Aaliyah stopped breathing.
“What?””
Evelyn stared at her.
“Thomas Hale was your father.””
Aaliyah's eyes widened.
“No.””
Vivian nodded.
“And that's why you were chosen.””
Marcus looked at Aaliyah.
“Chosen for what?””
Vivian's expression became almost triumphant.
“To marry you.””
Daniel looked at the documents again.
Then he found the final page.
A family tree.
Names connected by lines.
Marcus.
Daniel.
Evelyn.
Thomas.
Aaliyah.
And beneath them, one final name.
Aaliyah's mother.
Daniel stared at it.
“She's not just Thomas's daughter.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel pointed to the final line.
“She is…”
His voice stopped.
May you like
Because the final document revealed a relationship none of them had imagined.
And suddenly the entire wedding made horrifying sense.
