Chapter 1: The Bridal Suite

“You can't accuse me of something like that!””
Aaliyah's voice cracked across the bridal suite, sharp enough to make the champagne glasses tremble on the vanity.
Evelyn stood across from her, one hand wrapped tightly around her phone.
“I know exactly what you've been hiding.””
Aaliyah's eyes flashed.
“You've hated me from the beginning.””
“That isn't true,” Evelyn said.
“But I don't have to like someone to recognize when they're lying.””
The room fell silent.
White roses filled the corners. A veil hung from a gold chair. On the bed, Aaliyah's wedding gown spilled across the white comforter like a cloud.
It was supposed to be the happiest room in the hotel.
Instead, it felt like a courtroom.
Aaliyah stepped closer.
“You're trying to destroy my wedding.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I'm trying to stop my son from making the biggest mistake of his life.””
That was when the door opened.
Marcus walked in wearing his tuxedo, his tie slightly loosened from the endless photographs downstairs.
“What’s going on?””
Aaliyah immediately rushed toward him.
“Your mother is trying to ruin our wedding!””
Marcus caught her by the shoulders.
“Aaliyah, slow down. What happened?””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“I found something you need to see.””
Marcus looked at his mother.
“Mom, please. Not today.””
“Especially today.””
Aaliyah buried her face against Marcus's chest.
“See? This is what I've been dealing with. She doesn't respect me. She doesn't want me in this family.””
Evelyn's jaw tightened.
“Aaliyah, then tell him the truth.””
Aaliyah lifted her head.
“Then tell him everything!””
Evelyn stared at her.
“You really want me to?””
For the first time, Aaliyah's confidence disappeared.
Marcus looked between them.
“What truth?””
Neither woman answered.
Then Evelyn slowly raised one finger.
“There’s a camera in this room.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Aaliyah went completely still.
Evelyn pointed toward the ceiling above the mirror.
“A tiny security camera. Red indicator light. The hotel installed them after a theft last month.””
Aaliyah's lips parted.
“You can't—”
“Can't what?”” Evelyn asked quietly.
Marcus turned toward the mirror.
“Show me.””
A family member who had been waiting outside stepped in carrying a tablet.
Evelyn nodded.
“Play the recording.””
Aaliyah suddenly grabbed Marcus's arm.
“Don't.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because your mother has been spying on me.””
Evelyn answered before Marcus could.
“The camera records everyone who enters this suite. Including me.””
The tablet screen lit up.
The video showed the bridal suite from a wide angle.
Aaliyah appeared alone.
She checked the door.
Then the hallway.
Then the clock.
Marcus leaned closer.
“She was waiting for someone?””
Evelyn said nothing.
On the screen, Aaliyah walked toward the vanity and picked up her phone.
She dialed a number.
Marcus's face hardened.
Aaliyah whispered something.
The audio was faint, but clear enough.
“It's almost done.””
Marcus slowly turned toward his fiancée.
Aaliyah's eyes filled with panic.
“Marcus, please…”
He pointed at the screen.
“Who were you talking to?””
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
Aaliyah looked toward Evelyn.
“Your mother set me up.””
Evelyn's expression didn't change.
“I haven't said a word about what you told that person.””
Aaliyah froze.
Marcus looked at his mother.
“What did she tell them?””
Evelyn glanced at the tablet.
“Keep watching.””
The recording continued.
Aaliyah paced beside the bed.
“No, he doesn't suspect anything.””
Marcus stopped breathing.
Aaliyah continued talking.
“He trusts me completely.””
The room went silent.
Marcus's fingers slowly curled into fists.
Aaliyah noticed.
“Marcus…”
He raised one hand.
“Don't.””
The recording crackled.
Aaliyah laughed softly.
Then she said something that made Evelyn's stomach drop.
“Once the wedding is over, everything will be in my name.””
Marcus stared at the screen.
“What does that mean?””
Aaliyah didn't answer.
On the recording, a voice came through the phone.
A man's voice.
Low.
Familiar.
Marcus's eyes widened.
“Wait.””
He stepped toward the tablet.
“Play that again.””
The family member rewound it.
The man's voice came through clearly this time.
Marcus went pale.
Evelyn looked at her son.
“You recognize him?””
Marcus didn't respond.
Aaliyah began crying.
“Marcus, please listen to me.””
But Marcus wasn't looking at her anymore.
He was staring at the tablet.
May you like
Because he knew that voice.
And the man on the other end of Aaliyah's secret call was someone who should never have been part of their wedding.
