Chapter 9: The Son Who Helped Destroy His Own Family
The old train station had been closed for nearly fifteen years.
Its windows were boarded up, weeds had grown through the cracked pavement, and the rusted sign above the entrance still carried the name of a railway company that no longer existed.
Leon parked near the western platform.
Eleanor remained in the car, speaking with the police.
Calvin followed us.
I hadn't wanted him to come.
But he insisted.
"Whatever happened, Mother, I need to know the truth.""
I looked at him.
"Then you need to be prepared for what we might find.""
He nodded.
We entered through a broken side door.
The air smelled of damp concrete and rust.
A narrow staircase led beneath the western platform.
Leon switched on his flashlight.
"Margaret?""
A weak voice answered.
"Down here.""
We hurried toward the sound.
At the bottom of the stairs, we found a small storage room.
Margaret was sitting against the wall.
Her blouse was stained, and one side of her face was bruised.
When she saw me, she began sobbing.
"Gloria.""
I dropped beside her.
"Oh, Margaret.""
I held her as carefully as I could.
"What have they done to you?""
She shook her head.
"There's no time.""
Leon examined her injuries.
"We need medical assistance.""
Margaret grabbed his wrist.
"No. You need to hear what happened first.""
I looked into her tired eyes.
"Tell me about the babies.""
She swallowed.
Then she began.
"That night, three women were admitted to St. Mary's. You, Evelyn, and me.""
I nodded.
"Why were you there?""
Margaret closed her eyes.
"I was pregnant.""
I felt the air leave my lungs.
"You never told me.""
"I was ashamed. The father was a married man. I thought I could manage everything alone.""
She wiped her cheek.
"Then I met Dr. Whitmore. He promised to help me arrange a private adoption.""
"Victor?""
She nodded.
"Victor was already involved with the hospital. He was paying doctors to arrange illegal adoptions and alter records.""
Leon clenched his jaw.
Margaret continued.
"Your baby was healthy. Evelyn's baby was healthy. Mine was healthy, too. But Victor wanted one particular child.""
"Which one?""
"Yours.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
"Because Arthur had discovered Victor's adoption network. Victor wanted leverage over him. He believed that if he controlled your child, he could eventually control your family.""
I began crying.
"So they took my baby.""
Margaret nodded.
"I was told the child would be placed with a wealthy family and raised safely. I didn't understand what Victor intended.""
"Where was he sent?""
"To a family who worked for Victor. They changed his name and moved him from one home to another.""
Leon looked at her.
"And Michael?""
Margaret shook her head.
"Michael was Evelyn's baby. He was never supposed to be taken permanently. The hospital switched the bracelets because Victor needed the records to appear consistent.""
I felt dizzy.
"Then who did I raise?""
Margaret looked directly at me.
"Calvin was my biological son.""
I turned toward my son.
He stood completely still.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Then Calvin whispered:
"You're my grandmother?""
Margaret nodded.
"I'm sorry.""
He looked at me.
I felt my heart break for him.
All these years, I had loved him as my child.
Now I was learning that the baby I had held had actually been my sister's.
But that did not make him less mine.
I reached for his hand.
"You're still my son.""
Calvin began crying.
Margaret continued.
"Evelyn's son was placed with Arthur's parents. They believed he was their grandson through Leon. That's why Michael was raised as a Carter.""
Leon closed his eyes.
"At least my parents gave him a loving home.""
Margaret nodded.
"Yes.""
I looked at her.
"And my baby?""
She hesitated.
"His name was changed to Daniel Hale.""
The room seemed to shrink.
"Victor's son?""
Margaret nodded.
"Victor raised him as his heir.""
I felt a terrible wave of nausea.
My child had been raised by the man who had arranged the entire scheme.
"Does Daniel know?""
Margaret looked down.
"He discovered the truth when he was nineteen.""
"Then why didn't he come looking for me?""
"Because Victor told him you had abandoned him. He showed him forged documents claiming you had signed away your parental rights.""
I covered my mouth.
"He believed that?""
"He was young. Angry. And Victor had controlled every part of his life.""
Leon crouched beside her.
"Where is Daniel now?""
Margaret looked toward the staircase.
"He's working with Victor.""
Calvin shook his head.
"Why would he help him?""
"Because Victor promised him the company, the properties, and the money. And because Daniel believes that Arthur stole his inheritance.""
I felt tears running down my face.
"My son believes his father was the villain.""
Margaret reached for my hand.
"Gloria, there's more.""
I looked at her.
"After Arthur discovered the hospital records, he tried to take Daniel back. He arranged a meeting with Victor.""
"What happened?""
Margaret's voice broke.
"Victor found out.""
She looked toward Leon.
"Arthur was going to expose everything. Victor ordered the accident.""
Leon went completely still.
I whispered, "You knew?""
Margaret nodded.
"I was there when Victor made the call.""
Leon looked as though someone had struck him.
"Why didn't you tell the police?""
"I was threatened. Victor told me he would kill Calvin if I spoke.""
I looked at Margaret.
"And you kept silent for twenty-seven years?""
She began crying harder.
"I thought I was protecting him.""
Calvin stepped forward.
"You let me grow up believing Gloria was my biological mother, and you let her believe I was hers.""
Margaret lowered her head.
"I know.""
"You let me marry Daphne.""
Margaret flinched.
I turned toward him.
"Calvin, what do you mean?""
He looked at us.
"Daphne told me she was adopted. But I recently found out she was actually raised by Victor's sister.""
Margaret nodded.
"Victor took her when she was very young. I was told she would have a better life.""
"Then why did she marry me?""
Margaret looked terrified.
"Because Victor wanted access to Arthur's trust.""
I remembered Daphne's shoes.
Her handbag on my table.
Her smile when Calvin ordered me to kneel.
All of it had been part of a plan.
Margaret grabbed my hand.
"Gloria, you must understand. Daphne didn't marry Calvin for love. She was sent into your family to find the final page of Arthur's envelope.""
Leon looked toward the staircase.
"Then we need to leave. Now.""
A slow clap echoed from above.
We turned.
Victor stood at the top of the stairs.
Beside him was Daphne.
And behind them stood a young man.
The same young man from the photograph.
Daniel Hale.
My son.
Victor smiled.
"Well, this is a touching family reunion.""
Leon stepped in front of us.
"Get away from them.""
Victor laughed.
"Still playing the hero, Leon? You should have learned your lesson years ago.""
Daniel walked down the stairs.
He looked directly at me.
"You're Gloria Bennett?""
I nodded.
He studied my face.
Then he laughed bitterly.
"So this is the woman who gave me away.""
I felt my heart break.
"I never gave you away.""
Victor placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Your mother is lying.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Don't call yourself that.""
I took one step forward.
"Daniel, I have spent twenty-seven years wondering where you were.""
"Then you should have looked harder.""
"I did.""
He shook his head.
"Victor showed me the documents. You signed the adoption papers.""
"Those papers were forged.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Everyone has an excuse.""
Leon stepped forward.
"Daniel, listen to me. Victor arranged your father's death.""
Daniel looked at him.
"Arthur wasn't my father.""
I couldn't hold back anymore.
"He was the man who tried to save you!""
Daniel's eyes flickered.
Victor immediately interrupted.
"Enough.""
He took a folder from Daphne.
"Daniel, give me the envelope.""
Daniel turned toward him.
"Why?""
"Because the final page contains information that could destroy everything we've built.""
I stared at him.
"What did you do to my husband?""
Victor smiled.
"Arthur made his own choices.""
Leon stepped forward.
"Tell them about the brakes.""
Victor's smile faded.
Then he looked at Daniel.
"Your mother should know the truth about that night.""
Daniel frowned.
"What truth?""
Victor opened the folder.
"Arthur was not the only person in that car.""
Leon froze.
Victor continued.
"Someone else was driving.""
He looked directly at me.
"Someone your husband was trying to protect.""
My heart pounded.
"Who?""
Victor slowly removed a photograph.
It showed a younger Margaret standing beside Arthur's car.
But she wasn't alone.
A teenage boy was sitting in the driver's seat.
I recognized him.
Calvin.
My son.
I turned toward him.
His face had gone completely white.
Victor smiled.
"Perhaps it's time your family learned what really happened the night Arthur died.""
Calvin shook his head.
"No.""
Victor held up the photograph.
"Go ahead, Calvin. Tell your mother why your father's car was on that road.""
Calvin began trembling.
Then he looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
"Mother, I was there.""
