Chapter 7: The Son Who Had Been Living in the Shadows

I stared at the photograph until the young man's face blurred.

He had dark hair, tired eyes, and a small scar above his left eyebrow.

The same man Leon had shown me earlier.

The same man who might have been my biological son.

For twenty-seven years, I had celebrated Calvin's birthday, watched him blow out candles, bought him Christmas presents, and kissed his forehead when he was sick.

Now I was being told that somewhere in the world, another child had been born from my body and raised without knowing I existed.

And someone had just found him.

"Who sent this?"" I asked.

Calvin shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Leon took the phone.

"Don't respond.""

He examined the message details, then called Daniel Hayes, the attorney who had contacted us about Arthur's envelope.

"Daniel, we have a serious situation. Someone has located the young man connected to the hospital records. I need you to activate the protection arrangements Arthur established.""

He listened.

His expression darkened.

"What do you mean, the arrangements were canceled?""

A pause.

Then Leon stood.

"Who authorized that?""

I watched him carefully.

He slowly turned toward Calvin.

"Say that again.""

Daniel apparently repeated something.

Leon ended the call.

"What happened?"" I asked.

He placed the phone on the table.

"Someone used Calvin's authorization to cancel the protection order connected to Michael Carter.""

Calvin looked horrified.

"I never authorized anything.""

Leon turned toward him.

"Your electronic signature appears on the cancellation.""

"I didn't do it!""

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Could someone have accessed your account?""

Calvin nodded.

"Daphne has all my passwords. She handles our finances.""

Leon looked at him.

"Then we have another problem.""

Calvin sat down heavily.

"I never knew she was involved in any of this. She told me the company was legitimate. She said Victor was helping us build a future.""

I looked at my son.

"Then why did you sign the agreement with him?""

Calvin lowered his head.

"I found out about Dad's accident six months ago.""

My chest tightened.

"Six months?""

He nodded.

"Daphne showed me some old documents. She said Dad had been involved in illegal financial dealings and that Victor had helped cover up the scandal.""

"And you believed her?""

"I didn't know what to believe. Then she showed me a document with Dad's signature. It looked like he had agreed to transfer some properties before he died.""

Leon interrupted.

"That document was forged.""

Calvin covered his face.

"I know that now.""

"Why didn't you come to me?""

He looked at me.

"Because Daphne told me that if I asked questions, the police would discover that I had been involved in the company.""

"What company?""

"The one Victor created using Dad's old development records.""

I felt a terrible sadness.

My son had not simply been manipulated into signing a house transfer.

He had been gradually pulled into something much bigger.

But that did not erase his choices.

"You should have trusted me," I whispered.

Calvin began crying.

"I was ashamed.""

Before I could answer, Eleanor's phone rang.

She stepped into the hallway.

A minute later, she returned.

"I've located Michael.""

Leon stood immediately.

"Where?""

"He's at a private medical clinic outside the city. He's working there as an emergency transport technician.""

I felt my heart leap.

"Can we see him?""

Eleanor hesitated.

"Yes, but there's something you need to know.""

"What?""

"He's been using the name Michael Carter since childhood. His employment records show that he was adopted by a couple named Robert and Helen Carter.""

Leon closed his eyes.

"Those were my parents.""

I turned toward him.

"What?""

"After Evelyn died, I believed my son had died too. My parents were told the baby had survived but that the biological father was missing. They adopted him.""

Tears filled his eyes.

"They raised my son without knowing I was still alive.""

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I took his hand.

"At least he had a family.""

Leon nodded.

"Yes. And they loved him.""

We left immediately.

The clinic was a modest building with pale walls and a small emergency entrance. The smell of disinfectant followed us through the lobby.

A nurse directed us to a staff room.

A young man was standing beside a vending machine, drinking coffee.

When he turned around, Leon stopped walking.

The young man looked at him.

"Can I help you?""

Leon opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

The young man frowned.

"Sir?""

Leon finally managed to speak.

"My name is Leon Carter.""

Michael nodded politely.

"Okay.""

Leon swallowed.

"I believe I may be your father.""

The coffee cup slipped from Michael's hand.

It hit the floor.

"What?""

Leon took out the photograph.

"This was taken recently. I have another photograph from the day you were born.""

Michael stared at him.

Then he laughed nervously.

"Is this some kind of joke?""

"No.""

"Because my parents are Robert and Helen Carter. They adopted me when I was a baby.""

Leon nodded.

"They were my parents, too.""

Michael stepped backward.

"That's impossible.""

I moved closer.

"Your grandparents were wonderful people.""

Michael looked at me.

"Who are you?""

"My name is Gloria.""

He studied my face.

Something changed in his expression.

"Why are you here?""

I wanted to tell him everything.

I wanted to hold his hands and tell him that I had spent twenty-seven years wondering where my baby had gone.

But Arthur's warning returned to my mind.

Do not tell him the truth until you know who has been watching him.

So I simply said, "We believe someone has been hiding important information about your birth.""

Michael looked at Leon.

"Do you have proof?""

Leon handed him the hospital bracelet.

Michael read the name.

MICHAEL CARTER.

Then he noticed the date.

His expression changed.

"My parents told me I was born at St. Mary's.""

I nodded.

"That's where I gave birth, too.""

He looked at me sharply.

"What are you saying?""

Before anyone could answer, a woman in a white coat approached.

"Michael, you have a visitor.""

He turned.

"Who?""

The woman glanced at Leon.

Then she handed Michael a folded envelope.

"This was left for you at reception.""

Michael opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Margaret.

On the back, someone had written:

Ask Gloria why she let your brother live her life.

Michael looked at me.

"Brother?""

My heart stopped.

Then the clinic's emergency alarm sounded.

A nurse rushed through the hallway.

"Security! Someone has entered the staff records office!""

Leon grabbed Michael's arm.

"We need to leave.""

Michael pulled away.

"Nobody is going anywhere until someone explains what's happening!""

Then my phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

A woman's weak voice whispered:

"Gloria, it's Margaret.""

I nearly dropped the phone.

"Margaret! Where are you?""

"Listen to me. I don't have much time.""

"Are you hurt?""

"Yes. But there's something you must know.""

I looked toward Leon.

Margaret began crying.

"Calvin wasn't the only baby switched that night.""

Then she whispered the sentence that shattered everything again.

May you like

"Your biological son isn't Michael.""

The call disconnected.
