Chapter 9: My Father's Final Lie

I didn't cry when the call ended.

I wanted to.

I wanted to collapse on the floor, scream until my throat burned, and demand that someone explain how a father could threaten his own granddaughter.

Instead, I placed my phone on Daniel's desk and said, “We're going to him.””

Daniel shook his head immediately.

“Absolutely not.””

“He has Maya.””

“He wants the drive.””

“Then we'll give him something.””

“Renee, your father helped build Northstar. He knows how to manipulate evidence. If we walk into his house without a plan, we won't walk out.””

I looked at the black drive in my hand.

“Then we'll make a plan.””

Elena arrived twenty minutes later with two federal agents. She listened to the recording twice, then asked Caroline to identify every voice she recognized.

Caroline confirmed the man's voice belonged to our father.

She also revealed something she had kept hidden for years.

Frank Holloway hadn't retired from business because he wanted a quieter life.

He had stepped away after Northstar's board discovered that someone had been moving money through shell companies without authorization.

My father had been responsible for the original financial structure.

When Daniel began investigating the fraud, he found records connecting Northstar's executives to several public officials.

He also found payments authorized through an account registered in my name.

“I never opened that account,” I said.

Elena nodded.

“We believe someone used your identity to create a false paper trail. It made you appear to be the person moving the money.””

“And Dad knew?””

Caroline lowered her eyes.

“He told me he was protecting you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps using that word.””

Daniel reached for my hand.

I pulled away.

Not because I didn't want his comfort.

Because I couldn't bear another person telling me they had hurt me for my own good.

Elena spread a map across the table.

“Frank has a property near Lake Quinsigamond. It's registered to a company that once did business with Northstar. If Sullivan is working with him, Maya may be there.””

“How do we get her out?””

“We use the drive as leverage.””

Daniel shook his head.

“The drive contains the financial records. If Frank gets it, he'll destroy the evidence.””

“Then we don't give him the real one,” I said.

Everyone turned toward me.

I held up the black drive.

“We make a copy. Give him something that looks real. Meanwhile, your agents go after Maya.””

Elena considered the idea.

“We can create a decoy, but we need to know whether Frank expects the full archive or just the recording.””

“He asked for the original drive,” I said.

“He doesn't know what else is on it.””

Daniel looked at me carefully.

“Renee, the drive contains more than Northstar's accounts.””

“What else?””

He hesitated.

“Documents that connect several people to the crash. Names, payments, recorded conversations.””

“Does it include Dad?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“Then why haven't you handed it over?””

“Because the evidence isn't enough to prove who ordered the crash. We need the original recording from the night it happened.””

I thought of the wedding ring.

Sullivan had taken it.

“Can the recording be recovered from the ring?””

Daniel nodded.

“If we get it back.””

Elena folded the map.

“We'll recover the ring and secure the original archive. But Frank has to believe Renee is coming alone.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“I'll decide what I do,” I replied.

He looked at me with helpless anger.

“I already lost two years with you. I'm not going to lose you now.””

I held his gaze.

“Then help me bring our daughter home.””

For the first time, he didn't argue.

At 4:40 p.m., I drove toward my father's house with a decoy drive in my purse and a tiny microphone clipped beneath my blouse.

Two federal agents followed at a distance.

Elena remained at the safe house, monitoring the operation.

Daniel wanted to come with me.

I refused.

If my father saw him, the entire plan could collapse.

The house looked exactly as it had when I was a child. White siding. Green shutters. A wooden porch swing Dad had built when Maya was born.

The porch light was on.

My father opened the door before I knocked.

“Renee.””

He smiled and reached for me.

I stepped back.

His smile faded.

“Come inside, sweetheart.””

“Where's Maya?””

“Safe.””

“Let me see her.””

“After we talk.””

I walked into the living room.

Family photographs lined the walls. My graduation picture. Caroline's wedding portrait. Maya as a toddler, sitting on Dad's shoulders.

I stopped in front of the last photograph.

My father had his arms wrapped around my daughter, his face pressed against her cheek.

I remembered taking that picture.

Maya had been laughing.

Dad had looked so happy.

I wanted to tear the frame from the wall.

Instead, I turned toward him.

“Did you order Daniel's death?””

Frank sighed and lowered himself into his favorite armchair.

“Your husband made dangerous enemies.””

“That's not what I asked.””

“He was going to expose people who could have destroyed this family.””

“Did you order the crash?””

He looked at me for a long time.

Then he said, “I arranged for Daniel to be stopped.””

My stomach twisted.

“Stopped how?””

“I wanted the records back. I wanted him to understand that he couldn't threaten everyone who had ever helped him.””

“You knew his car would crash?””

Frank rubbed his forehead.

“I didn't intend for him to die.””

“But you knew it might happen.””

He didn't answer.

I felt something inside me break.

“You let me bury him.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed, and the sound frightened even me.

“You arranged an attack on my husband, let me believe he was dead, and then held me while I cried at his funeral.””

“I did what I had to do.””

“No. You did what you wanted to do.””

His face hardened.

“Daniel was destroying everything I built.””

“So you destroyed us instead?””

Frank stood.

“You don't understand the world you live in, Renee. Good people make terrible choices when they have no other options.””

“Then explain your choice to Maya.””

His expression shifted.

For the first time, he looked genuinely uneasy.

“She wasn't supposed to know.””

“She's thirteen.””

“She found the ring.””

“And you sent Sullivan after her?””

“I told him to retrieve the evidence. I never instructed him to hurt her.””

“You knew he was dangerous!””

Frank struck the arm of his chair.

“I was trying to prevent a catastrophe!””

His voice echoed through the room.

Then he lowered it.

“Renee, I need you to understand something. If those records reach the wrong people, your daughter will never be safe. Neither will you.””

I took the decoy drive from my purse.

“Here are the records.””

He stared at it.

“Is this the original?””

“Yes.””

He held out his hand.

I didn't move.

“Where is Maya?””

Frank's jaw tightened.

“You're in no position to negotiate.””

“Then neither are you.””

For several seconds, we stared at each other.

Finally, he reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.

He tapped the screen.

A video appeared.

Maya sat on the floor of a dim room, her hands tied in front of her. She looked exhausted, but she was conscious.

“Mom?”” she whispered through the speaker.

I stepped forward.

“Maya! Baby, are you hurt?””

Frank turned the phone away.

“She's alive. That's all you need to know.””

“Let me talk to her!””

“When I have the drive.””

I placed it on the coffee table.

He snatched it up.

Then he smiled.

“Thank you, sweetheart.””

The words made my skin crawl.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small silver ring.

Daniel's wedding ring.

He placed it beside the decoy drive.

“You'll find that your husband has a habit of hiding things inside objects he thinks no one will examine.””

I stared at the ring.

“How did you get it?””

“Mark brought it to me.””

“Where is he?””

Frank's smile disappeared.

“Busy.””

My pulse quickened.

“Busy doing what?””

Before he could answer, his phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

His face went white.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He ignored me and answered.

“Mark?””

A man's voice erupted through the speaker.

“She's not at the warehouse! The agents are here!””

Frank gripped the phone.

“What do you mean, they're there?””

“They found the decoy location. Someone tipped them off.””

Frank turned toward me.

His eyes narrowed.

“You brought them here.””

I backed away.

“No.””

He grabbed my arm.

“Who else knows about this meeting?””

I pulled free.

“You're the one who called me!””

He looked toward the window, then back at me.

For the first time, my father seemed afraid.

He shoved the ring into my hand.

“Go. Now.””

“What?””

“Take the ring and leave through the back door.””

“Where is Maya?””

He hesitated.

Then he whispered, “The house by the water. Sullivan moved her there after he realized the warehouse was compromised.””

“Which house?””

Frank grabbed a notepad from the table and wrote an address.

I took it.

“Why are you helping me?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because I made a terrible mistake.””

I wanted to believe him.

But I remembered all the times he had used those same gentle words to hide something ugly.

I backed toward the hallway.

“Come with me. Tell the agents what you did.””

He shook his head.

“I can't.””

“Then you're still choosing yourself.””

I turned and ran.

Outside, rain hammered the driveway. I reached my car, locked the doors, and called Elena.

“Frank confessed. Sullivan has Maya at a house near the water. I'm sending you the address.””

“Renee, where are you?””

“In my car.””

“Stay there. Agents are coming to you.””

I looked at the ring in my palm.

A tiny seam ran along the inner band.

I pressed it with my thumbnail.

A small compartment opened.

Inside was a strip of paper, folded into a square.

I unfolded it.

Six words were written in Daniel's handwriting.

*THE ARCHIVE ISN'T THE REAL SECRET.*

Beneath them was a name.

*RENEE HOLLOWAY.*

I stared at the paper.

My father had said the records could destroy our family.

Daniel had hidden my name inside the ring.

And somewhere near the water, my daughter was waiting for me.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Daniel, I have the ring. There's something inside it—”

“Renee, listen carefully,” he interrupted.

“I just found the original crash report.””

My heart stopped.

“And?””

He took a shaky breath.

“You weren't supposed to be home that night.””

I gripped the steering wheel.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel's voice broke.

“The original plan wasn't to kill me.””

A pause.

May you like

Then he said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew about my family.

“It was to kill you.””
