Chapter 7: The Woman Behind the Betrayal

For almost a full minute, neither Daniel nor I moved.

The photograph of Maya glowed on my cracked phone screen. Her wrists were tied to the arms of a wooden chair, and a strip of duct tape hung loose around one ankle. Her eyes were red, but her chin was lifted.

Even terrified, my daughter was trying to be brave.

I pressed my fingers against the screen.

“I'm coming, baby,” I whispered.

Daniel took the phone from me and enlarged the photograph.

“Look at the wall behind her.””

“What?””

“The bricks. See that dark stain?””

I stared at the image. Behind Maya's chair was a row of old red bricks, interrupted by a vertical strip of concrete. Near the floor, a rusty metal pipe disappeared into the wall.

Daniel went pale.

“I know this place.””

“Where?””

“An abandoned pumping station near the Connecticut River. Northstar used it years ago to store equipment.””

“Then we go there.””

“No.””

I stared at him.

“No?””

“That's exactly what they want. If we walk in carrying the original records, they'll take everything and kill us anyway.””

“My daughter is tied to a chair!””

“And if you run in without a plan, you could end up in the chair beside her.””

I slapped him.

The sound cracked through the quiet street.

Daniel didn't raise a hand to defend himself. He simply stood there, his face turned to one side.

“You don't get to lecture me about protecting our daughter,” I said.

“You gave me two years of grief while you hid in the shadows. You let Maya risk her life because you were too afraid to trust your own family.””

His eyes shone.

“You're right.””

“I don't want another apology.””

“I know.””

“I want my daughter home.””

“So do I.””

For the first time since he had returned from the dead, I believed him.

Not because I trusted his explanations.

Because he looked as terrified as I felt.

My phone vibrated again.

A message from the unknown number.

*YOU HAVE UNTIL SIX. NO POLICE. NO FEDERAL AGENTS. NO TRICKS.*

A second message arrived.

*AND RENEE? ASK DANIEL WHAT HE DID TO PROTECT YOU.*

I slowly turned toward my husband.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel stared at the screen.

“It's a threat.””

“Don't insult me.””

He rubbed his face.

“Before I disappeared, I signed a statement accusing you of helping Northstar move money.””

The world went silent.

I looked at him, waiting for him to correct himself.

He didn't.

“You accused me of a crime?””

“I knew the statement was false. I signed it because Sullivan told me he would use you as leverage if I refused.””

“And you thought that would protect me?””

“He promised the statement would never be used. He wanted something to hold over me.””

I backed away.

“You let a detective create a criminal accusation against me, then disappeared without telling me?””

“I was trying to keep them from arresting you.””

“Did you ever consider asking me what I wanted?””

He had no answer.

A car horn sounded at the end of the street.

A dark blue sedan pulled up beside us.

The passenger window lowered.

Elena Cross leaned across the seat.

“Get in. Both of you.””

Daniel hesitated.

“How do we know this isn't another trap?””

Elena looked at me.

“Because if I wanted you arrested, Daniel would already be in federal custody, and Renee wouldn't be standing here.””

I climbed into the back seat.

Daniel followed.

Elena accelerated before the doors had fully shut.

“Did you receive the photograph?”” she asked.

“Yes,” I said.

“Maya is being held at the pumping station.””

Elena shook her head.

“No. That photograph is real, but it was taken somewhere else.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“How can you be certain?””

“Because our team searched the pumping station this morning. It's empty.””

I grabbed the back of her seat.

“Then where is my daughter?””

“We're trying to find out.””

“Trying isn't good enough!””

“I know, Renee.””

Elena's voice softened, but her hands tightened on the steering wheel.

“We've been tracking Sullivan for months. He has connections to a private security company that operates several properties along the river. One of those properties is a former Northstar warehouse.””

“Where?””

“An industrial complex outside Worcester.””

Daniel stared through the windshield.

“He wouldn't take her there. It's too obvious.””

“Unless he wants us to think it's too obvious,” Elena replied.

I looked between them.

“How long have you two been working together?””

“Since Daniel disappeared,” Elena said.

“And you helped him leave us?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know he was alive when I buried him?””

Elena glanced at me in the rearview mirror.

“I knew he had survived the crash. I didn't know where he was for the first several months.””

“You could have told me.””

“If I had, you would have tried to find him. Sullivan was monitoring your phone, your finances, and your movements. We had evidence that he was watching your house.””

I remembered the man in my daughter's bedroom.

The messages.

The photograph of Maya.

It was possible Elena was telling the truth.

But I had learned that truth could be used as a weapon just as easily as a lie.

“Why did Maya get involved?”” I asked.

Daniel answered quietly.

“Because she found the ring.””

Elena looked at him sharply.

“You told me she never saw it.””

“I thought she hadn't.””

Daniel explained that the wedding ring contained a tiny encrypted data capsule, hidden beneath the inner band. The code inside unlocked a larger archive stored on a secure server.

Maya had discovered the compartment while examining the ring.

She had also found a way to access the records.

“She was trying to help you,” I whispered.

Daniel nodded.

“She thought if she found enough evidence, I could come home.””

I turned toward the window, blinking back tears.

My daughter had been trying to bring her father back while I sat at the kitchen table worrying about homework and teenage moods.

“And the person who taught her to hide the archive?”” I asked.

Elena exchanged a glance with Daniel.

Neither answered.

I leaned forward.

“Tell me.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Caroline introduced Maya to someone she trusted. A former Northstar accountant who agreed to help us.””

“Who?””

Elena slowed at a red light.

“His name is Peter Walsh. He used to work with Daniel. He disappeared six months ago.””

“Disappeared?””

“He was supposed to meet us yesterday,” Elena said.

“He never arrived.””

I remembered Maya's words.

The person who helped Sullivan find me is someone I trusted.

“Do you think Peter betrayed her?””

“We don't know,” Elena replied.

Daniel's burner phone rang.

He answered.

A man's voice came through, distorted by static.

“Daniel, it's Peter.””

Elena slammed on the brakes.

Daniel gripped the dashboard.

“Where are you?””

“There's no time. Sullivan has the ring, but he doesn't know the second code.””

“What second code?””

“The one Maya created. She hid it somewhere only Renee can find.””

My heart began to pound.

“Why would she hide something from me?””

Peter ignored my question.

“Listen carefully. Sullivan thinks the archive is the only thing that matters. He's wrong. The archive is bait.””

Daniel went rigid.

“Bait for whom?””

“For the person who ordered the crash.””

Elena reached for the phone.

“Peter, identify yourself. Tell me where you are.””

A sharp metallic bang sounded through the speaker.

Peter cursed.

Then he said, “Renee, I'm sorry about your sister.””

The line went dead.

I stared at the phone.

“My sister?””

Daniel turned toward me.

“What did he mean?””

I couldn't answer.

Because at that exact moment, I remembered the note beneath Maya's pillow.

The original isn't the only copy.

And the woman who had taught my daughter how to hide evidence was Caroline.

My phone vibrated one last time.

This time, the message came from Maya's number.

*MOM, DON'T BRING THE RECORDS. BRING THE FAMILY PHOTO FROM DAD'S STUDY.*

I stared at the words.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“What's in the family photograph?””

May you like

He went white.

“Renee,” he whispered, “that photograph should have been destroyed.””
