Chapter 9: The Confession in the Blue Ledger

The estate storage facility smelled like cardboard, dust, and old paper.

Daniel unlocked the metal cabinet at 9:12 a.m.

Inside were several sealed boxes bearing my grandmother's name.

He removed the smallest one.

"Your grandmother specifically instructed me to preserve this separately.""

He placed it on a table.

The blue ledger was inside.

It was a thick, leather-bound notebook with a brass clasp.

I recognized it immediately.

Grandma used to keep it beside her favorite chair.

When I was younger, I'd sometimes sit on the floor and watch her write in it.

She'd told me it was her way of making sure nobody ever forgot what had happened.

I never understood what she meant.

Until now.

Daniel opened the ledger carefully.

The first page contained a list of dates and amounts.

Some entries were marked with initials.

Others contained short notes.

I leaned closer.

"What's all this?""

"Financial records," Daniel said.

"Your grandmother documented every payment made to or on behalf of Denise and Marcus.""

He turned a page.

There were bank transfers.

Loan agreements.

Receipts for business equipment.

Payments toward household expenses.

And repeated withdrawals from an account connected to the property trust.

Lorraine frowned.

"Why would Eleanor be paying their expenses?""

"Some were loans. Others were payments made under written agreements.""

I looked at the dates.

One entry stood out.

*March 14 — $4,200 — Emergency household assistance.*

Another followed.

*April 2 — $3,600 — Business equipment.*

Then another.

*May 19 — $5,000 — Outstanding debt settlement.*

The amounts continued.

I counted several entries.

Grandma had given my mother and Marcus tens of thousands of dollars over the years.

"Did they ever repay her?""

Daniel pointed to a column on the right.

"Some payments were partially repaid. Many weren't.""

I felt sick.

"Mom told me we couldn't afford basic things.""

Lorraine lowered her eyes.

"She told everyone the same thing.""

I turned another page.

There was a section labeled:

*Unauthorized Use of Beneficiary Information.*

My name appeared beneath it.

My full legal name.

Zarya Marie Bennett.

I stared.

"What is this?""

Daniel read the first entry.

"Your grandmother recorded a concern that Marcus had obtained copies of your identification documents while helping Denise prepare business paperwork.""

I remembered the envelope.

The tax forms.

The yellow stickers.

The documents my mother had asked me to sign.

"Grandma knew?""

"It appears she discovered something.""

Daniel turned another page.

There was a handwritten note.

Denise claims Zarya agreed to help with the business. Zarya has not been informed of the actual amounts or obligations.

My eyes filled.

Grandma had known.

She had known I was being used.

I continued reading.

Another entry:

I spoke to Zarya privately. She does not understand why her name appears on business records. I have instructed Daniel to secure her identity documents.

I covered my mouth.

My grandmother had tried to protect me.

And I had never known.

Daniel turned to the final section.

"Here.""

The handwriting became larger.

More forceful.

At the top of the page was a date.

The day before Grandma's fall.

Beneath it was a list of names.

Denise Bennett.

Marcus Reed.

Lorraine Bennett.

And a fourth name.

Patricia Collins.

The retired notary.

I stared at it.

"Why is Patricia here?""

Daniel adjusted his glasses.

"Let's read the entry.""

He moved the ledger closer.

Marcus arrived with Denise and demanded that I sign a new authorization. He claimed the business was in danger and needed access to the property as collateral.

I looked at Lorraine.

She nodded slowly.

Daniel continued.

I refused. Marcus became aggressive. Denise told me I was destroying their family. I reminded her that the house and education fund were Zarya's, not theirs.

My throat tightened.

Then came the sentence that made Lorraine grip the table.

Denise said Zarya would never know if we changed the paperwork.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

My mother had said it.

She'd actually said it.

Daniel turned the page.

The next entry was dated the morning of Grandma's death.

It was written in a different pen.

Marcus returned. He brought Patricia Collins's old notary stamp. Denise said she could arrange the rest. I told them both to leave.

Daniel stopped reading.

The room was silent.

Then I noticed a folded sheet tucked into the ledger's back cover.

"What's that?""

Daniel carefully removed it.

It was a handwritten statement.

At the bottom was Marcus Reed's signature.

I stared.

"That's his confession?""

Daniel examined the page.

"It appears to be a signed statement, but we need to verify its authenticity.""

He began reading.

I, Marcus Reed, acknowledge that I requested Denise Bennett's assistance in obtaining control of Eleanor Bennett's property and financial accounts.

My hands trembled.

The statement continued.

I knew Zarya Bennett was named as the beneficiary. I believed that if we could obtain her signature or establish that she had abandoned her inheritance, the property could be transferred without objection.

I looked at Daniel.

"Abandoned her inheritance?""

He nodded grimly.

The statement continued.

I also asked Denise to use Zarya's identification information in connection with business payroll and financing records. Denise agreed.

Lorraine covered her mouth.

I felt physically sick.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

I did not intend for Eleanor to be injured. During the argument, I moved her chair and she fell. Denise instructed me not to tell anyone about the argument. I agreed because I was afraid of the consequences.

The room went silent.

I read it again.

Then again.

Marcus had admitted moving the chair.

He had admitted being involved in the incident that led to my grandmother's death.

And my mother had helped conceal it.

I couldn't breathe.

Daniel closed the ledger.

"This document must be authenticated and preserved. We will provide it to the appropriate investigators.""

I looked at Lorraine.

She was crying.

"Did you know he wrote this?""

"No.""

"Did you know he admitted moving the chair?""

"No, Zarya.""

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I sat down.

My grandmother had been frightened.

She had tried to protect me.

And the people who were supposed to love her had been fighting over what she owned.

My phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice spoke softly.

"Zarya Bennett?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Patricia Collins.""

I froze.

The notary.

"How did you get my number?""

"Daniel Foster gave it to me. He said there was a document involving my old notary stamp.""

I looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

"Are you aware of a property authorization bearing your stamp?"" I asked.

"Yes," Patricia said.

"And I need you to understand something. I never notarized that document.""

My heart began pounding.

"Can you confirm that officially?""

"I can. But there's something else.""

"What?""

"I remember Marcus Reed coming to my office several years ago. He asked whether he could purchase my old notary stamp after I retired.""

Daniel leaned closer.

"Did you sell it?""

"Absolutely not. I told him it was illegal to use it. He became angry.""

I swallowed.

"Do you remember when?""

"About three months before Eleanor died.""

I looked at the ledger.

"Did you report him?""

"I should have. I didn't. I was afraid of getting involved.""

Her voice trembled.

"But I still have the email where he asked me.""

Daniel immediately requested that she preserve it.

Patricia agreed to provide a formal statement.

When the call ended, Daniel looked at me.

"This may establish how the false authorization was created.""

I nodded.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Kaylee.

*Kaylee:* Zarya, please answer.

I called immediately.

"What's wrong?""

She was crying.

"Mom is home. Marcus isn't.""

"Where's Mia?""

"With me.""

"Are you both safe?""

"I think so.""

I heard my mother's voice in the background.

"Give me that phone!""

Kaylee whispered, "Mom says you have to come home.""

"Why?""

"She says Marcus left and took some important papers.""

My stomach tightened.

"What papers?""

"I don't know. Mom is crying. She keeps saying he ruined everything.""

I took a breath.

"Kaylee, listen. Is Mia with you?""

"Yes.""

"Go into your room and lock the door if you feel uncomfortable. Don't argue with Mom. I'll call Aunt Lorraine.""

"Zarya?""

"Yes?""

"Mom said Marcus told her he was going to leave the country.""

I went cold.

"What?""

"He said he had a place to stay somewhere else. And he said he was taking the money.""

I looked at Daniel.

He had heard every word.

"Kaylee, stay with Mia. Don't leave the house.""

I hung up.

Daniel immediately contacted the relevant authorities about the suspected fraud, threats, and the newly discovered confession.

Then he called the trust administrator.

"We need an emergency restriction on all assets connected to the trust. Immediately.""

I stood beside the window.

Marcus was running.

I could feel it.

He had taken the documents because he knew the evidence was catching up with him.

But why had my mother let him go?

And what money was he taking?

Daniel received an email.

He opened it.

His expression changed.

"Zarya.""

I turned.

"What?""

"Your grandmother's education fund.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"What about it?""

Daniel rotated the laptop toward me.

A recent transaction had appeared in the account history.

*Withdrawal Request: $32,000.*

*Status: Pending Processing.*

The request had been submitted under my name.

But the destination account belonged to Reed Family Holdings.

I stared at the screen.

"They're trying to take Grandma's education money.""

Daniel nodded.

"The transaction hasn't cleared. We need to stop it.""

He picked up his phone and began calling the financial institution.

I looked at the withdrawal details.

The authorization was supposedly signed by me.

Again.

Another forged signature.

Another attempt to steal something my grandmother had left me.

Then I noticed the date.

The request had been submitted at 6:58 that morning.

While I was sitting in Daniel's office.

Someone had been accessing my information in real time.

My phone rang.

Denise.

I answered.

"Mom?""

Her voice was barely recognizable.

"Zarya, please.""

"What happened?""

"Marcus took the money.""

"What money?""

"The education fund. He said he could transfer it before anyone stopped him.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did you help him?""

She started crying.

"I didn't think he would actually do it.""

"Did you give him my information?""

"Zarya—"

"Did you?""

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered, "Yes.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"Why?""

"Because he said we would pay everything back.""

"With what?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you know he was using my identity?""

She sobbed.

"I thought it was temporary.""

I stared at the university award letter on the table.

My mother had asked me to give up college because the family needed me.

Meanwhile, she and Marcus had been using the money my grandmother specifically left to help me attend college.

"Mom, you took my childhood. You took my paychecks. You tried to take my scholarship.""

"I know.""

"And now you helped him take Grandma's money.""

"I know!""

Her crying became louder.

Then she said something that made me stop breathing.

"Zarya, Marcus told me he had another copy of the documents. He said if I didn't help him, he'd expose what happened that night.""

I gripped the phone.

"What happened that night?""

My mother went silent.

"Mom?""

Then she whispered:

"Marcus didn't just move Grandma's chair. He told me to make sure the ambulance didn't arrive too quickly.""

The phone slipped from my hand.

May you like

Lorraine screamed my name.

And somewhere across town, the man who had destroyed my grandmother's final days was still free.
