Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Hid To Protect Me

I stared at the meeting location until the words stopped looking real.

A small coffee shop outside Richmond.

Tomorrow.

Written in my father’s handwriting.

But that was impossible.

My father had been gone for years.

At least, that was what I believed.

Daniel picked up the note carefully.

“When did you see this?””

“It was under the photograph.””

He looked at the date.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

“Your father planned this.””

“But how?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

The next morning, I arrived twenty minutes early.

I sat in the corner of the coffee shop, watching every person who walked through the door.

Every older man.

Every person who looked like they were searching.

I didn’t know what I expected.

Maybe my father walking in.

Maybe some dramatic reunion.

Maybe the missing piece of my childhood suddenly appearing in front of me.

Instead, a woman walked in.

The same woman from the photograph.

Elena.

She looked around nervously before spotting me.

“Marcus?””

I stood.

“Yes.””

She sat across from me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered:

“You look like him.””

I swallowed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

She smiled sadly.

“Because it’s true.””

I studied her face.

“Who are you?””

She looked down at her hands.

“I worked with your father.””

“Business?””

She nodded.

“And I helped him uncover what happened.””

“To the money?””

“To everything.””

My heart started racing.

“What does that mean?””

Elena took a deep breath.

“Your father discovered that money was missing from several accounts. At first, he believed Darren was responsible.””

I already knew that part.

“But then he found something else.””

“What?””

She looked directly at me.

“The money was being moved because someone was trying to hide financial problems connected to the company.””

“Whose company?””

“Your mother’s.””

I looked away.

I hated how every answer brought another question.

“My mother?””

“She didn’t start it.””

I looked back.

“What?””

Elena continued.

“Your mother was manipulated.””

“By Darren?””

She nodded.

“He convinced her that your father was planning to leave her with nothing. He used her fear.””

I remembered my mother sitting at the kitchen table.

The guilt.

The excuses.

The things she never explained.

“So she helped him?””

“She signed documents she didn’t understand.””

I closed my eyes.

That sounded exactly like her.

“She still lied to me.””

“Yes.””

Elena didn’t defend her.

“She made choices that hurt you.””

That honesty surprised me.

“What about my father?””

Elena’s expression became heavier.

“He tried to come back.””

“When?””

“Three years ago.””

I leaned forward.

“What happened?””

“He contacted me because he had evidence. He wanted to meet Daniel and expose everything.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

Elena looked down.

“Because someone found out.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

Then she said:

“Darren.””

I already knew.

But hearing it still hurt.

“What did Darren do?””

“He confronted your father.””

“Did he hurt him?””

Elena looked away.

“I don’t know.””

The answer scared me.

“But I know Anthony was afraid.””

I stared at the table.

My entire life had been built on a lie.

My father wasn’t a man who walked away.

He was a man who was trying to return.

“What happened after that?””

Elena reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“He gave me this.””

My name was written on it.

Again.

I couldn’t breathe.

“He told me if anything happened, I had to wait until you were ready.””

“Ready for what?””

She pushed the envelope toward me.

“The truth.””

Inside was a single page.

My father’s handwriting.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, I’m sorry.

I’m sorry you had to learn everything this way.

But I needed you to understand something.

The people closest to you are not always the people protecting you.

I stopped.

My hands trembled.

The next line was underlined.

I never stopped fighting to come home.

Then I read the final sentence.

The person who caused this is still near you.

I looked up.

“Elena.””

She met my eyes.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

She reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out a small recording device.

“Your father left this with me.””

I stared at it.

“What is it?””

“His final message.””

My heart stopped.

“Why didn’t you give me this before?””

“Because he told me only you should decide when to hear it.””

I looked at the device.

A part of me wanted to destroy it.

Another part of me had spent fourteen years waiting for this moment.

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

My father.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

“Marcus…”

I covered my mouth.

The voice continued.

“If you’re hearing this, then I’m sorry I wasn’t there to say this myself.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I need you to know one thing.””

A pause.

“I never abandoned you.””

I closed my eyes.

Then my father said something that made my entire body go cold.

“Your mother knows where I am.””

The recording stopped.

I looked at Elena.

“What?””

She didn’t answer.

May you like

Because my phone started ringing.

My mother.
