Chapter 8: The File That Changed Everything

Daniel was waiting outside the law office when I arrived.

He didn’t even ask how I looked so exhausted.

He just opened the door.

“You found out.””

I stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked at the letter in my hand.

“Your father’s handwriting.””

I nodded.

“You knew.””

“I suspected he left something behind.””

“You knew he was alive?””

Daniel looked away.

That was the second time someone avoided answering a simple question.

“Daniel.””

“I knew Anthony believed he was in danger.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

He sighed.

“No. I did not know where he was.””

I walked inside.

“Everyone keeps saying they didn’t know. But somehow everyone knew enough to hide things from me.””

Daniel didn’t argue.

Maybe because he knew I was right.

He led me into his office.

A large file sat on his desk.

“This is what your father left.””

I sat down.

“What is it?””

“Everything he collected before disappearing.””

The file contained bank records, contracts, emails, property documents.

A timeline.

A pattern.

My father had been investigating missing money from his businesses.

But then I saw something that made my stomach twist.

A transfer record.

A company name.

A signature.

I looked closer.

“Darren.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“So it was him.””

“Not exactly.””

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

“Darren moved money.””

My heart sank.

“But?””

“But he wasn’t the only one.””

Daniel opened another page.

A second signature appeared.

My mother’s.

I stared at it.

“No.””

“Marcus.””

“No.””

I pushed the paper away.

“She wouldn’t.””

Daniel didn’t say anything.

And that silence hurt.

“My mother made mistakes. She lied. But she wouldn’t steal from my father.””

Daniel leaned back.

“I’m not here to tell you what to believe.””

“Then why show me this?””

“Because your father wanted you to have the facts.””

I looked back at the documents.

Two signatures.

Two people.

The two people I had trusted most.

Daniel pointed at another page.

“But this is the part your father considered most important.””

I followed his finger.

There was a handwritten note.

A sentence.

*The money was not taken. It was moved to protect Marcus.*

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father believed the missing money was connected to a larger plan.””

“What plan?””

“We don’t know.””

“Then why would he write that?””

“Because he was preparing something.””

I looked through the remaining papers.

Then I found a photograph.

A woman I didn’t recognize.

She was standing beside my father outside a building.

On the back was a date.

Three years ago.

The same year he came back looking for me.

“Who is she?””

Daniel became serious.

“I was hoping you would know.””

“I’ve never seen her.””

He picked up the photograph.

“Your father kept this separate from everything else.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because he believed she was the reason he disappeared.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Marcus Walker?””

“Yes.””

There was a pause.

“I’m sorry it took me this long to find you.””

My entire body went still.

“Who is this?””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“My name is Elena.””

I looked at the photograph.

The same woman.

“I knew your father.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“How?””

Her voice became quieter.

“Because I was there the night Anthony Walker disappeared.””

I stood up.

Daniel looked at me.

“What happened that night?””

The woman was silent for a moment.

Then she said:

“Marcus, your father didn’t disappear.””

A pause.

“He was taken.””

The call suddenly cut off.

And on Daniel’s desk, beneath the photograph, I noticed something I hadn’t seen before.

A date.

May you like

Tomorrow’s date.

And a meeting location written in my father’s handwriting.
