Chapter 2: The Name on the Record

Vanessa didn't sleep that night.

She sat on the edge of the bed while Marcus remained downstairs.

For twelve years, she had believed she knew every important thing about her husband.

His favorite coffee.

The song he played when he was stressed.

The scar beneath his left shoulder.

The way he cried silently at his mother's funeral.

The password to the garage.

The name of his childhood best friend.

She knew Marcus.

At least, she thought she did.

At 2:17 a.m., she heard footsteps outside the bedroom.

Marcus stopped at the doorway.

“Can I come in?””

Vanessa didn't look at him.

“You can explain.””

He stayed where he was.

“There are things I should have told you.””

Vanessa finally turned.

“How many?””

Marcus swallowed.

“More than one.””

Her eyes hardened.

“Then start with Emily.””

He looked down.

“Emily is my daughter.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Marcus walked inside and sat in the chair near the window.

“I love her.””

“I know.””

“I've raised her.””

“I know.””

“She calls me Dad.””

“I know.””

“Nothing changes that.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Then why did someone send me a hospital document saying I need to find her real father?””

Marcus rubbed his hands together.

“Because someone wants you to believe something.””

“Do I?””

He looked at her.

“What?””

“That someone is lying?””

Marcus hesitated.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You hesitated.””

“I was trying to find the right words.””

“You've had twelve years.””

He looked away.

Vanessa stood.

“Who was the woman calling you?””

Marcus was silent.

“Her name.””

“Vanessa—”

“Her name, Marcus.””

“Claire.””

The name seemed to echo through the room.

“Who is Claire?””

“She worked with my father.””

Vanessa frowned.

“Your father died eight years ago.””

“I know.””

“So why is his employee calling you after midnight?””

Marcus stood.

“She isn't his employee anymore.””

“What is she?””

Marcus looked toward the hallway.

“Someone who knows the truth.””

Vanessa's stomach tightened.

“About Emily?””

He nodded.

“Then tell me.””

“I can't do it tonight.””

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“You don't get to decide when I deserve the truth.””

Downstairs, Emily began crying.

Both of them froze.

Vanessa rushed out.

She found Emily sitting on the couch with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders.

“Mommy?””

Vanessa knelt beside her.

“What happened?””

“Daddy said nobody was leaving.””

“He's right.””

Emily looked toward the stairs.

“Are you mad at him?””

Vanessa couldn't answer.

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“Is Daddy going away?””

Vanessa pulled her close.

“No.””

“Promise?””

Vanessa hugged her tighter.

“I promise we're going to figure this out.””

Behind them, Marcus stood at the bottom of the stairs.

He looked exhausted.

“Emily,” he said softly, “go upstairs and try to sleep.””

She looked at him.

“Are you still my daddy?””

Marcus's face crumpled.

He walked over and knelt in front of her.

“Always.””

Emily hugged him.

Vanessa watched.

For the first time that night, she saw something she couldn't fake or explain away.

Marcus genuinely loved their daughter.

Whatever the truth was, his love for Emily wasn't an act.

After Emily went upstairs, Vanessa returned to the kitchen.

Marcus followed.

“Show me the whole document.””

He hesitated.

Then he pulled his phone from his pocket.

“The original isn't on my phone.””

“Where is it?””

“My father's old house.””

Vanessa frowned.

“You still have things there?””

“One box.””

“What box?””

“Documents. Letters. Things he left behind.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Why would my daughter's birth records be in your father's house?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“Because Emily wasn't supposed to be born.””

Vanessa felt the room tilt.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus opened his mouth.

A loud knock came from the front door.

Both of them turned.

It was nearly three in the morning.

Marcus went pale.

Vanessa whispered, “Who is that?””

Another knock.

Three slow hits.

Marcus didn't move.

Then a woman's voice came through the door.

“Marcus, I know you're in there.””

Vanessa's heart stopped.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Claire.””

Vanessa stared at him.

The woman knocked again.

“Open the door, Marcus. We don't have much time.””

Vanessa stepped toward the entryway.

Marcus grabbed her wrist.

“Don't.””

She pulled free.

“You've been hiding her from me for twelve years.””

“Vanessa, please.””

The voice outside became louder.

“Marcus! If you don't tell her, I will.””

Vanessa looked at her husband.

“Tell me what?””

Marcus's phone suddenly rang.

The caller ID showed *Claire*.

At the exact same moment, someone slipped an envelope underneath the front door.

Vanessa walked toward it.

Marcus whispered, “Don't open that.””

She picked it up anyway.

On the front was a single handwritten sentence:

*For Vanessa Johnson — before Marcus can lie again.*
